Captain Jean-Luc Picard
"Chain of Command, Part II"
As captain of the Enterprise I routinely face danger to myself and those under my command. But the torture I endured at the hands of Gul Madred was truly brutal. Madred captured me at Celtris III, and the manner of his "interrogation" for Starfleet tactical information was in direct violation of the Seldonis IV Convention. I resisted as long as I could, but had I not been freed, I might have told him anything.
TRIVIA:
Captain Picard's security access code at the time of his Cardassian interrogation was Picard-delta-5. |

|
Commander Will Riker
"Furture Imperfect"
Imagine waking up to find that 16 years have gone by and you can't remember a single one of them. Dr. Crusher said my amnesia was the result of Altarian encephalitis. Now I had a son I couldn't remember. It was a ruse, though. My "son" was actually Barash, a lonely humanoid child who was looking for a companion. He returned with me to the Enterprise.
TRIVIA:
Minuet, from Riker's holodeck jazz club simulation, was his wife in the false history created by Barash. |

|
Lt. Commander Data
"Hero Worship"
We rescued Timothy from the S.S. Vico after it suffered heavy damage on a research mission. Timothy's reaction to me after the rescue might best be termed "hero worship." He chose to emulate me because, without emotions, he would not have to deal with his parents' deaths. I have learned that humans must face their emotions. no matter how painful - and Timothy learned this, too.
TRIVIA:
The S.S. Vico was an Oberth-class Federation research ship with an unusual NAR registry prefix. |

|
Lieutenant Worf
"Ethics"
When a Klingon can no longer stand and face his enemies as a warrior, when he becomes a burden to his friends and family, it is time for the Hegh'bat - the ritual suicide. I suffered a paralyzing back injury and could not live as an obiect of pity or shame. But when Dr. Crusher advised me of an experimental treatment with great risk, I took that risk for Alexander's sake. The procedure worked, and with mv son's help. I made a full recovery.
TRIVIA:
Brak'lul is the Klingon trait of having multiple redundancies for most vital bodily functions. |

|
Dr. Beverly Crusher
"Remember Me"
After a visit from Dr. Quaice, my whole world was yanked out from under me. Everyone I knew was disappearing. The universe was getting smaller by the minute, yet I was the only one who noticed. Getting to the bottom of the mystery became even harder when the ship's computer failed. Fortunately, Wesley and the Traveler were able to pull me out of the static warp bubble I was in without a moment to spare.
TRIVIA:
The Enterprise-D's transporter system maintains a record of anyone who's been beamed to or from the ship. |
6 |
|
Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge
"I, Borg"
Not everyone agreed with Captain Picard's decision to beam the injured Borg survivor onto the Enterprise. The plan to send him back with an invasive computer program was pretty controversial, too. My own feelings about "Third of Five" began to change once I got to know him. Hugh, as we called him, became a friend to me, and I was glad when the Captain decided not to use him to destroy his own people.
TRIVIA:
Hugh was found in the Argolis Cluster, where he was later returned to the Borg. |
7 |
|
Counselor Deanna Troi
"The Loss"
When the Enterprise encountered a group of two-dimensional creatures heading for a cosmic string fragment, I suddenly lost my empathic powers for the first time in my life. The loss was only disconcerting at first, but as I struggled to perform my duties as ship's counselor, my condition became truly terrifying. I went so far as to resign my commission. Just as I was learning to overcome my loss, my epathic ability returned.
TRIVIA:
Ensian Tess Allenby was at the helm when the Enterprise
encountered the two-dimensional creatures. |
8 |
|
Chief Miles O'Brien
"Disaster"
I was on the bridge with Counselor Troi and Ensign Ro when the Enterprise collided with two quantum filaments. We were cut off from the rest of the ship, not knowing whether anyone else had survived. As the senior officer, Counselor Troi was in charge. She faced some hard choices and made the right decisions. But I couldn't breathe easily until I leamed that Keiko was fine.
TRIVIA:
Emergency Procedure Alpha 2 disengages all shipboard computer control in favor of manual override. |
9 |
|
Wesley Crusher
"Journey's End"
There was a time when Starfleet meant a lot to me. I didn't want to disappoint Captain Picard, or my mother. But after a while the Academy just didn't feel right. The Traveler, appearing to me as a member o the Native American colony on Dorvan V, helped me find the right path. I resigned from Starfleet and chose to stay with the colony, where the Traveler will take me to new planes of existence.
TRIVIA:
The Traveler's home planet is Tau Alpha C. |
10 |
|
Captain Jean-Luc Picard
"The Battle"
When engaging an enemy vessel that is using light-speed sensors only, a tactical advantage can be attained by using the Picard Maneuver. The maneuver calls for acceleration to warp speed so that your ship briefly appears to be in two places at once. confusing your opponent. The maneuver is named for Captain Jean-Luc Picard. who first used it whle he was captain of the U.S.S. Stargazer.
TRIVIA:
Captain Picard was a lieutenant aboard the Stargazer and took charge of the bridge when his captain was killed. |
11 |
|
Commander Will Riker
"Peak Performance"
An unconventional approach may prove helpful when facing an opponent with uncertain or superior vessel strength. In an Academy simulation, William T. Riker calculated a sensory blind spot on a Tholian vessel and hid within it for a tactical advantage. Later in his career, while serving as lieutenant aboard the U.S.S. Potemkin, Riker once shut down all power and hung the ship over a planet's magnetic pole to confuse his opponent's sensors.
TRIVIA:
Commander Riker first joined the crew of the Enterprise-D at Deneb IV, transferring from the Hood. |
12 |
|
Lt. Commander Data
"Measure of a Man"
The android Data, created by Dr. Noonien Soong and his wife, Juliana, is the only one of his kind in existence. In a landmark legal case, Judge Advocate General Phillipa Louvois ruled that Data is a sentient being entitled to civil rights as a citizen under the Constitution of the United Federation of Planets. The ruling gave Data the right to resign from Starfleet if he so chooses.
TRIVIA:
Data's skull is composed of cortenide and duranium. |
13 |
|
Lieutenant Worf
"Encounter at Farpoint"
The Khitomer Accords ended nearly a century of hostilities between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. The new era of peace paved the way for admission of the first Klingon into Starfleet. That Klingon was Worf. son of Mogh, who became a lieutenant commander in charge of security aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-D under Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Worf was occasionally pulled into Klingon politics, but his loyalty to Picard and Starfleet remained true.
TRIVIA:
Worf played soccer during his youth on Earth. |
14 |
|
Dr. Beverly Crusher
"Genesis"
Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome is an intron virus that causes humanoids to revert to earlier evolutionary forms. First identified by Dr. Beverly Crusher, chief medical officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D. the virus came about accidentally when a routine synthetic T-cell treatment went awry. Reginald Barclay, a systems diagnostic engineer aboard the Enterprise, was the first patient to contract the virus.
TRIVIA:
Left unchecked, Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome might have caused Captain Picard to devolve into a pygmy marmoset. |
15 |
|
Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge
"The Next Phase"
Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge was an instrumental figure in Starfleet's discovery of an experimental Romulan cloaking technology called the "interphase generator." LaForge and Ensign Ro Laren were rendered invisible to normal matter by the generator in an incident aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-D. The generator, which combined a molecular phase inverter with a standard cloaking device, was deemed dangerous but worth further study by Starfleet engineers.
TRIVIA:
La Forge did not receive his VISOR until after his fifth birthday.
|
16 |
|
Counselor Deanna Troi
"The Child"
One of the strangest interactions with alien life occurred aboard the Enterprise-D when that vessel's counselor, Deanna Troi, was impregnated by a non-corporeal lie form. Dr. Katherine Pulaski was amazed by the incredibly accelerated gestation rate. Troi gave birth to a child she named lan Andrew, after her father. The child was the alien's attempt to learn more about humanity. The boy died in a matter of days, but the entity departed with knowledge of human love and compassion.
TRIVIA:
The Enterprise was on its way to planet ['aucdet IX] when
Troi was impregnated. |
17 |
|
Chief Miles O'Brien
"Realm of Fear"
During transport, the body is converted into billions of kiloquads of data. There is no margin for error. Yet Miles O'Brien, transporter chief aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-D, never lost anyone in 22 years of duty. On the contrary, O'Brien helped Lieutenant Reginald Barclay discover quasi-energy microbes living within the matter stream of the Enterprise's transporter. The discovery saved several U.S.S. Yosemite crew members whose patterns were caught in the beam.
TRIVIA:
Transporter psychosis is a rare disorder caused by a breakdown of neurochemical molecules during transport. |
18 |
|
Wesley Crusher
"The First Duty"
The Kolvoord Starburst maneuver, an aerobatic space flight pattern performed by five single-pilot spacecraft, is extremely dangerous and remains banned by the Academy. The maneuver once caused the deaths of five Academy cadets. But Cadet Wesley Crusher and other members of Nova Squadron tried it anyway, resulting in another death. Crusher's academic career was marred and he was forced to repeat his sophomore year.
TRIVIA:
The Starfleet Academy flight range is located near the planet Saturn. |

A rift between Captain Picard and his older brother, Robert, was healed when Picard visited his home in France. Picard finally met his sister-in-law Marie and nephew Rene. A bond was formed and then painfully severed years later when Picard learned of the death of Robert and Rene in a fire. Childless himself, Picard was forced to acknowledge the end of the family line.
"When it comes down to the fundamental outlook and philosophy of Picard. that's something I share very much."
- Patrick Stewart |
20 |
|
Commander Will Riker
"The Icarus Factor"
Commander Riker was surprised, and not at all pleased, to find that the civilian advisor sent to him on the eve of his new command of the U.S.S. Aries was his estranged father. Kyle Riker had abandoned his son 15 years ago, and Will couldn't bury the hatchet easily. An [anbo-jyutsu] contest helped clear the air between them, and the elder Riker found the strength to tell his son he loved him.
"You choose your enemies. You choose your friends. But family, that's in the stars."
- Chief O'Brien to Commander Riker, "The Icarus Factor" |
21 |
|
Lt. Commander Data
"The Offspring"
Data's creation of Lal, his android daughter, caused a stir within Starfleet. The role of fatherhood suited Data well, and he assumed full responsibility for the care and guidance of the new life form. Though she only lived a few weeks, Lal's behavioral programs quickly exceeded her father's. She experienced love for Data, and regret, when the end came.
"Jonathan slipped easily and naturally into the role of head honcho on the set."
- Patrick Stewart on Jonathan Frakes' directorial debut, "The Offspring" |
22 |
|
Lieutenant Worf
"Redemption, Part II"

Kurn reintroduced Worf to Klingon ways as they fought side-by-side in support of Gowron during the Klingon Civil War. Together, the two brothers restored rightful honor and respect to the Mogh family name, leading to Kurn's appointment to the High Council.
"Star Trek works best when you frame your story around a big ethical question or moral dilemma.
- Drew Deighan. co-writer, "Sins of the Father" |
23 |
|
Dr. Beverly Crusher
"When the Bough Breaks"
Serving on the U.S.S. Enterprise-D with her teenage son proved challenging for Dr. Crusher. How much space should she give Wesley? How much guidance? When he was abducted by people who could not have their own children, Beverly Crusher struggled not to give in to fear. Years later, the time came to let go of her son as he embarked on new adventures with the Traveler.
"Gates (McFadden) is extremely thoughtful and professional, and brings a lot of that to the doctor."
- Patti Yasutake, "Nurse Alyssa Ogawa" |
24 |
|
Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge
"Interface"
The U.S.S. Hera, commanded by Geordi's mother, Silva La Forge, disappeared, and Geordi feared he may have missed his last chance to see his mother. But he saw her again - or something that appeared to be her - during an effort to rescue the crew of the U.S.S. Raman. The image turned out to be an alien life form using Silva's likeness to communicate with La Forge. He saved the aliens and learned to accept his mother's death.
"It was so real. I felt I had a chance to say good-bye."
- Lt. Commander La Forge, "Interface" |
25 |
|
Counselor Deanna Troi

"Lwaxana is sort of the Auntie Mame of the galaxy."
- Majel Barrett |
26 |
|
Chief Miles O'Brien
"Rascals"
Chief O'Brien could hardly believe that his wife was now a 12-year-old. Keiko, like the captain and two others, had been reduced to a child after passing through an energy field. Although Keiko expected him to adjust, O'Brien found the situation extremely awkward. To make matters worse, their daughter, Molly, didn't recognize Keiko as her mother. Fortunately for all the O'Briens, the effect on Keiko was temporary.
"There's some tongue-in-cheek involved, with these kids running the ship and helping overcome the Ferengi."
- Adam Nimoy, director, "Rascals." |
27 |
|
Wesley Crusher

But Jack recorded a holographic message for his son soon after Wesley was born, and Wes finally viewed the message many years later. The message helped him to feel a connection with the senior Crusher, and to know that his father had loved him.
"I'll always be a part of you, Wesley."
- Jack Crusher, "Family" |

With 318 days of shore leave coming, Picard vowed to return to Anij.
"I wonder if you're aware of the trust you engender, Jean-Luc Picard."
- Anij, Star Trek: Insurrection |
29 |
|
Commander Will Riker
"The Outcast"
The concept of a genderless race was difficult for Commander Riker to grasp, but he fell in love with the J'naii pilot named Soren. As a J'haii, Soren was expected to conform to the socially acceptable androgynous norm. But Soren was romantically attracted to Riker, displaying strong female tendencies. For this "offense," the J'naii subjected Soren to psychotectic therapy, "curing" the illicit attraction before Riker could intervene.

"K'Ehleyr was a strong female alien character at war with herself and the two cultures she straddled, in the tradition of Spock."
- Drew Deighan. co-writer, "Reunion" |
32 |
|
Dr. Beverly Crusher
"The Host"
Beverly Crusher didn't know what she was getting into when she fell in love with Ambassador Odan. Charming and attractive, Odan returned Beverly's feelings. When Odan was fatally injured, Dr. Crusher learned he was a Trill. The symbiont was eventually placed within another host body - this one female. She was still Odan, still in love with Beverly, but the change was too much for the doctor, who ended the relationship.
"Despite all our technology, our ability to fall in love is still carried by instinct."
- Michel Horvat, writer, "The Host" |
33 |
|
Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge
"Booby Trap"
Falling for Holodeck characters is not uncommon in the annals of Starfleet. When it happened to Geordi La Forge, the "character" was a recreation of Dr. Leah Brahms, chief designer of the Enterprise-D's warp engines. La Forge had a chance to meet the real Leah Brahms a year later, when he learned, much to his dismay, that she was married. La Forge recovered and the two became friends.
"The audience will accept a lot as long as it is credible and imaginative."
- Richard Danus, co-writer, "Booby Trap" |
34 |
|
Counselor Deanna Troi
"Menage a Troi"
Counselor Troi's relationship with Commander Riker goes back to her days as a student on Betazed. They became romantically involved, but Riker's career plans eventually intervened. Later, the Enterprise's visit to the Ba'ku homeworld rekindled Troi's and Riker's old feelings for a while.
"Your feelings about her have not changed since the day I met you, Commander. This place just let them out for a little fresh air."
- Worf to Riker, Star Trek: Insurrection |
35 |

asked his friend Data to talk some sens into
Keiko, with disappointing results. But Keiko was simply suffering from wedding day jitters, and ultimately, O'Brien was married to his true love.

- Robert Weimer, director of "Data's Day" |
36 |
|
Wesley Crusher
"The Dauphin"
Salia was Wesley Crusher's first romantic interest. She was also the leader of Daled IV, a world divided in civil war. Her visit aboard the Enterprise-D was a memorable one for Wesley, who was attracted to Salia's intelligence, wit and beauty. Wesley soon learned that Salia was really a shape-shifting allasomorph who only appeared to be a beautiful 16-year-old girl. Salia's responsibility to unite her homeworld meant her relationship with Wesley could not last.
"(Wil Wheaton) was rather nervous and shy about the kiss. They went off and practiced it privately."
- Leonard Mlodinow, co-writer of "The Dauphin" |
37 |
|
Captain Jean-Luc Picard

The battle with the Borg began when 900 colonists at New Providence disappeared from Jouret IV. |
39 |
|
Lt. Commander Data

Lt. Commander Data found Lore's dismantled body on Omicron Theta. Once reassembled, Lore showed why he had been taken apart in the first place: he was sadistic and manipulative, a danger to anyone he came in contact with - especially Data. Later, Lore stole the emotion chip Dr. Soong had intended for Data. Eventually Data overcame his brother when Lore attempted to lead Hugh's Borg group into ruin. Lore was disassembled, and Data retained the emotion chip.
TRIVIA:
Lore was rescued by a Pakled ship after drifting in space for two years. |

La Forge struggled to convince the young Romulan officer that only by working together could they survive the planet's fierce surface conditions and damaging magnetic fields. Bochra learned to put his distrust aside, and by cooperating with La Forge, the two men survived until rescued.
TRIVIA:
Galorndorn Core, while in Federation space, is just a half light-year from the Romulan Neutral Zone. |
43 |
|

The experience left Troi in a coma for days, but eventually she identified Jev as her
attacker and he retured to his homeworld for punishment.
TRIVIA:
Jev criminally invaded minds in the Nel system shortly
before his Enterprise visit. |
44 |
|
Chief Miles O'Brien

The Ux-Mal criminals were noncorporeal life-forms who took over O'Brien, Counselor Troi and Lt. Commander Data. The one who commandeered O'Brien's body forced the chief to terrorize Keiko and their daughter, who were among the hostages. O'Brien was not free of his adversary until Captain Picard forced their departure.
TRIVIA:
The criminals were exiled from Ux-Mal to a moon of planet Mab-Bu VI, where they remained for centuries. |
45 |
|
Wesley Crusher
"The Game"
Wesley Crusher's return to the U.S.S. Enterprise-D after going off to Starfleet Academy was not quite what he expected. One by one the entire crew turned against him, victims of a psychotropically addicting Ktarian mind game. Crusher managed to evade the crew's suspicions for a while, but finally they chased him down and forced him to don the brainwashing contraption. Crusher prevailed, however – he managed to repair Data before his capture, and the android saved the ship.
TRIVIA:
The Ktarian game involved mentally directing small disks into various funnel shapes. |
46 |
|
Captain Jean-Luc Picard
"The Big Goodbye"
Dixon Hill was a fictional private detective of San Francisco, and Captain Picard enjoyed playing the character on the holodeck. He introduced the program to Guinan and others, but he had no idea it would later help him destroy several Borg drones who had invaded the U.S.S. Enterprise-E. With the safety protocols deactivated, a machine gun can neutralize the fiercest enemy.
"The Borg have a mechanical substructure coursing through their bodies, working in conjunction with their anatomy."
- Todd Masters, creator/producer of special characters, Star Trek: First Contact |
47 |
|
Commander Will Riker
"Cause and Effect"
In moments of relaxation, Commander Riker often can be found playing the trombone or enjoying a jazz club simulation on the holodeck. Riker also likes to cook. But more than any other off-duty activity, Riker looks forward to his weekly poker games with his shipmates. He is a master of the "poker face" and frequently bluffs his way to big winnings. On one occasion, Riker even beat his own transporter duplicate.
"It's better to be lucky than good!"
- Commander Riker (sarcastically), "Cause and Effect" |
48 |
|
Lt. Commander Data
"Elementary, Dear Data"
Captain Picard has his Dixon Hill; for Lt. Commander Data, it's Sherlock Holmes. The fictional detective character, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, captured Data's interest. The android read and memorized all of the Holmes stories, and he occasionally used his free time to portray Holmes in holodeck simulations. Unfortunately, a holodeck malfunction once gave self-awareness to Holmes' ultimate nemesis, Professor Moriarty.
"The Next Generation company became really tight, almost a family. A lot of life experiences went by in those seven years."
- Cliff Bole, director, "Lonely Among Us" |
49 |
|
Lieutenant Worf
"A Fistful of Datas"
Captain Picard usually has to order Lieutenant Worf to take time off for relaxation. Lieutenant Reginald Barclay created an American West holodeck program for Worf's son, Alexander, and Worf reluctantly agreed to play the part of the sheriff of Deadwood, South Dakota. After a barroom brawl, Worf began to enjoy the program. But the computer malfunctioned, and Sheriff Worf was forced to save Alexander by shooting it out with Data in the role of Frank Hollander.
"My two goals were to get Worf into a barroom brawl, and to get Data in a dress."
- Robert Hewitt Wolfe, co-writer, "A Fistful of Datas" |
50 |
|
Dr. Beverly Crusher
"The Nth Degree"
Dr. Crusher pursued theatrics aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-D as time allowed. She formed a theater company among her shipmates and became its director, helming productions of The Pirates of Penzance and Cyrano de Bergerac, to name a few. Crusher even wrote two [original plays] for her troupe, called Something for Breaklast and Frame of Mind. She never expected the latter to become "real" to Commander Riker."
You were a little off-pitch, but I think I can take care of that."
- Dr. Crusher to Geordi La Forge, "Disaster" |
51 |
|
Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge
"Booby Trap"
Lt. Commander La Forge is a brilliant starship engineer, but for some reason, he has always had trouble forging relationships with women. Thinking computer technology could help, La Forge used the holodeck to create a beautiful beach environment for a date with a young female crewmember, but she simply didn't feel "that way" about him. Later, an alien from Zalkon with incredible healing powers gave La Forge some much-needed confidence, enabling him to successfully date Christy Henshaw.
"I like Geordi because I like LeVar. He has a very lively, energetic presence."
- Richard Danus, co-writer, "Booby Trap" |
52 |
|
Counselor Deanna Troi
"The Game"
One of Counselor Troi's greatest passions is a simple food substance from her father's native Earth: chocolate. The Enterprise's replicators were programmed to offer dietetic substitutes for chocolate, but Troi, the quintessential chocolate connoisseur, usually insisted on the real thing. When off duty, she could often be found with a bowl of chocolate ice cream in Ten-Forward. Troi introduced chocolate to the lyaaran ambassador Loquel, who tested even her limits for the sweet stuff.
"I never met a chocolate I didn't like."
- Counselor Troi, "The Price" |
53 |
|
Chief Miles O'Brien
"Transfigurations"
Tending the transporter systems of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D doesn't provide much of a creative outlet for Miles O'Brien, so the chief often uses his free time to grab a wetsuit and go kayaking in holodeck simulations. O'Brien really throws himself into his kayak pursuits and once dislocated his shoulder in the rigorous program. When not kayaking, O'Brien enjoys playing the cello, something his father had hoped he would pursue professionally.
"Hey Doc, I'm dying out here!"
- Chief Miles O'Brien, "Transfigurations" |
54 |
|
Wesley Crusher
"Justice"
Wesley Crusher may be a sharp young student of the theoretical sciences, but he's also a boy who loves baseball. His father taught him to play the sport before his death when Wes was 5 years old. Many years later, when Wes was introducing the children of Edo to baseball, he went back to catch a fly ball and accidentally fell into a flower bed, for which the penalty was death. Fortunately, Captain Picard intervened.
"I am with Starfleet. We don't lie."
- Wesley Crusher, "Justice" |

Captain Jean-Luc Picard
"Star Trek: Insurrection"
Welcoming new planets into the Federation can involve some rather unusual circumstances. The delegates for the Regent Cuzar and her people began eating the floral arrangements on the banquet tables aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-E. After Captain Picard flawlessly delivered his official greeting, "U-cheen che-for," the regent placed an elaborate arrangement of beads upon the captain's head in the time-honored tradition of her people.
TRIVIA:
The Regent Cuzar and her people come from an M-class world (population 300 million) that achieved warp drive a year before joining the Federation. |

|
Commander Will Riker
"A Matter of Honor"
Commander Riker, participating in an exchange program, was the first Starfleet officer in history to serve aboard a Klingon vessel. He studied Klingon rituals and behavior closely before his appointment to the Pagh as first officer. When second officer Klag questioned his ability, Riker used force to humble the Klingon in front of his fellow crewmates. Later, Riker used a similar ritual of power to return command of the ship to its proper captain.
TRIVIA:
Aboard the Pagh, Riker enjoyed a traditional Klingon dish called bregit lung. |
57 |
|
Lt. Commander Data
"Masks"
Lt. Commander Data didn't seek to be subverted by alien mythical characters from the D'Arsay archive. Nevertheless, he assumed several roles from the mythology of the long-dead civilization, including Masaka, the volatile sun goddess. Recognizing the extreme ceremonial nature of the D'Arsan mythology, Captain Picard assumed the role of Korgano and played out a re-creation of the mythical ritual, ultimately driving Masaka from the sky.
TRIVIA:
The D'Arsay archive was launched 87 million years ago as a data storage device. |
58 |
|
Lieutenant Worf
"The Icarus Factor"
The Age of Ascension is a Klingon rite of passage involving great physical duress. The ritual, which marks a new level of spirituality, calls for the warrior to walk between two lines of Klingons who subject him to agonizing painstiks. The warrior expresses his most profound feelings during the exercise. Lieutenant Worf undertook the ritual, with the help of his U.S.S. Enterprise-D crewmates, to commemorate the anniversary of his first Age of Ascension.
TRIVIA:
A Klingon's first Age of Ascention ritual must take place before age 13. |
59 |
|
Dr. Beverly Crusher
"Attached"
Each morning on the U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Dr. Crusher enjoyed the comfortable social ritual of preparing a private breakfast for herself and Captain Picard. It was a quiet time for the two long-time friends to chat about events aboard ship. After a while, Crusher began to cook elaborate dishes for these daily repasts, only to learn that the Captain, like herself, simply preferred coffee and a croissant.
TRIVIA:
Fleeing from pursuers on Kesprytt III, Captain Picard and Dr. Crusher headed for the Prytt village of Ohn-Kor. |
60 |
|
Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge
"Aquiel"
While investigating a murder at Relay Station 47, Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge met Lieutenant Aquiel Uhnari, a young Haliian woman. She introduced him to the Canar, a Haliian crystal artifact used by her people to establish a deep emotional link during love. Geordi and Aquiel were engrossed in the first stages of the ceremonial bonding, their hands joined upon the artifact, when Commander Riker announced that Aquiel was a suspect in the murder.
TRIVIA:
La Forge prefers his coffee iced. |
61 |
|
Counselor Deanna Troi
"Cost of Living"
Betazoid mating rituals are in some ways familiar to humans, and in some ways quite startling. Betazoid custom calls for betrothals through genetic bonding at a young age, a fate that nearly befell Counselor Deanna Troi aboard the Enterprise-D. What's more, Betazoid weddings require the bride, groom, and guests to go naked, a custom which once scared away a would-be suitor to Deanna's mother.
TRIVIA:
The Sacred Chalice of Rixx is an important Betazoid artifact used for ceremonial purposes. |
62 |
|
Chief Miles O'Brien
"Data's Day"
Since the days of the first wooden sailing ships, all captains have enjoyed the happy privilege of joining together two people in the bonds of matrimony. Miles O'Brien was married to Keiko Ishikawa in a ceremonial shipboard wedding following this time-honored tradition, with Captain Picard officiating. O'Brien wore his full-dress uniform, while his bride wore a traditional Japanese gown. It was the most important ceremony of Miles' life.
TRIVIA:
For the wedding, Data received dancing lessons from Dr. Crusher, once known as the "Dancing Doctor" to her colleagues. |
63 |
|
Wesley Crusher
"Where No One Has Gone Before"
"Captain's log, stardate 41263.4. For outstanding performance in the best Starfleet tradition, Wesley Crusher is made acting ensign with the duties and privileges of that rank." These words, spoken by Captain Picard in an official but unpretentious ceremony on the bridge, followed Wesley Crusher's role in helping the Traveler return the ship to Federation space. The ceremony was brief, but it was the start of Wesley's Starfleet career.
TRIVIA:
Kosinski's experiments with the Traveler hurled the Enterprise-D 2.7 million light years to Galaxy M33. |

Captain Jean-Luc Picard
"Attached"
Captain Picard had a decades-old secret he kept from Dr. Crusher until alien psi-wave devices implanted in their brains allowed Beverly to learn the truth: he was in love with her. Picard had never revealed his secret because she had married his best friend, Jack Crusher. After Jack died, Picard would not act on his feelings because he felt doing so would betray his friend.
"I sat in the Captain's chair and said 'Make it so. I felt about 10 years old. It was great."
- Nicholas Sagan, writer, "Attached" |
65 |
|
Commander Will Riker
"The Pegasus"
Helping your captain violate the Treaty of Algeron, then fleeing with him after mutiny - that's quite a secret to keep for 12 years. Commander Riker lived with this secret until his old captain, Erik Pressman, came aboard to lead a search for the Pegasus and its illegal phasing cloak. Given a second chance, Riker came forward with the truth about Pressman and his cloaking device.
"I was seven months out of the Academy, my head still ringing with words like 'duty' and 'honor.'"
- Commander Riker, "The Pegasus" |
66 |
|
Lt. Commander Data
"Inheritance"
Data was stunned to meet his mother, Dr. Juliana Tainer, on a mission to the planet Atrea. She told him of her marriage to Dr. Soong, his creator, and of helping Soong create Data. But something didn't seem right, and before long, Data's suspicions were confirmed: Juliana was an android replica of his mother, created by Soong when the real Juliana died. Honoring Soong's wishes, Data did not reveal the truth to Juliana.
"Making Juliana both sympathetic and suspicious was a challenge."
- Dan Koeppel, co-writer, "Inheritance" |
67 |
|
Lieutenant Worf
"Reunion"
Lieutenant Worf discovered K'Ehleyr had a secret named Alexander – their son. Worf was reluctant to claim the boy as his own. The matter of his discommendation would ostracize Alexander in Klingon society. Besides, how would Worf raise Alexander with the proper attention required for Klingon children? But K'Ehleyr's death and the Rozhenkos advancing age left only Worf to care for Alexander, who staved aboard to live with his father.
"Fans around the Paramount lot would say to me, 'You're the Klingonmeister.'"
- Drew Deighan, co-writer, "Reunion" |
68 |
|
Dr. Beverly Crusher
"Sub Rosa"
Beverly Crusher, formerly Beverly Howard, nearly resigned from Starfleet at the urging of Ronin. His powerful hypnotic control almost kept Beverly from discovering her family's ancient secret: Generations of Howard women had been lovers of Ronin, an anaphasic life form. He gave the women emotional sustenance while they gave him molecular cohesion. Ronin attempted to join with Beverly, but she was forced to kill him when he threatened her friends.
"I was about to be initiated into a very unusual relationship. You might call it a family tradition!"
- Dr. Beverly Crusher, "Sub Rosa" |
69 |
|
Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge
"The Mind's Eye"
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge nearly murdered Klingon governor Vagh before quick thinking by his crewmates stopped him. But La Forge had no idea why he was trying to kill Vagh. The truth soon came to light: La Forge had been kidnapped during a previous away mission and brainwashed by Romulan operatives, then sent back to his ship to commit the murder. For La Forge, the mental healing process would take time.
"I'm just not sure about anything."
- Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge, "The Mind's Eye" |
70 |
|
Counselor Deanna Troi
"Dark Page"
When Deanna Troi was an infant, a terrible accident befell the Troi family, something Lwaxana kept secret from her daughter for the next 30 years. The painful memory ultimately sent Lwaxana into a coma, and Deanna entered her mother's mind to free her of the psychic trauma. That's when Deanna learned of Kestra, the sister she had never known. Kestra had died in a drowning accident at the age of 7.
"I'd like to learn what was good and joyous about her, to celebrate her life."
- Deanna Troi, "Dark Page" |
71 |
|
Chief Miles O'Brien
"The Wounded"
Many years ago, Chief Miles O'Brien served aboard the starship Rutledge under Captain Maxwell. O'Brien witnessed Cardassian atrocities during a rescue of survivors of the Setlik III massacre. As he assisted women and children, O'Brien was attacked by a Cardassian soldier, and O'Brien fired his phaser. The man was incinerated. It was the first time O'Brien had killed anyone, and the experience left an emotional scar.
"It's not you I hate, Cardassian. I hate what I became because of you."
- Chief O'Brien, "The Wounded" |
72 |
|
Wesley Crusher
"Final Mission"
In many ways, Ensign Wesley Crusher felt that Captain Picard was the father he'd never had. During a mission with the Captain in which Picard was gravely injured, Crusher struggled valiantly to keep him alive. Fearing he might not get another chance, he bared his soul to the Captain. Everything he had ever done, all that he had worked for, he did because he wanted Picard to be proud of him.
"There was a lot of enthusiasm for this episode, because Wil (Wheaton) had been frustrated by always being the boy genius."
- Kasey Arnold-Ince, co-writer, "Final Mission" |
73 |
|
Captain Jean-Luc Picard
"Darmok"
Attempting to communicate with the Tamarians was a frustrating process. Then I found myself stranded on EI-Adrel IV with Dathon, their captain, and it appeared that he wanted to fight. But as we faced danger together, I came to understand that Tamarians communicate strictly by metaphor. It saddens me that our mutual understanding came at the cost of Dathon's life. His sacrifice opened the door between our peoples.
"More familiarity with our own mythology might help us to relate to theirs."
- Captain Picard, "Darmok" |
74 |
|
Commander Will Riker
"Star Trek Generations"
I was aware that Commander Riker chose to accept a post on the Enterprise rather than take command of the Drake. In later years, he was offered command of the Aries and the Melbourne, and in each case, he decided to remain aboard the Enterprise as first officer. Nevertheless, I know Will Riker is ready to command his own starship, and I have every confidence that one day he will succeed me as captain of the Enterprise.
"Jonathan (Frakes) is such a sensitive and hard-working individual."
- Patrick Stewart |
75 |
|
Lt. Commander Data
"Star Trek: First Contact"
Lt. Commander Data has come far since the start of our tour of duty aboard the Enterprise. Always, he has aspired to be more than he is, and his efforts to understand humanity have taken many forms. He faced one of his most difficult choices when the Borg Queen offered him actual organic components, but Data was tempted for less than a second.
"Starfleet was founded to seek out new life. Well, there it sits!"
- Captain Picard referring to Data, "The Measure of a Man" |
76 |
|
Lieutenant Worf
"Star Trek: First Contact"
Serving in Starfleet hasn't been easy for Worf. Klingon ways are not always compatible with conduct befitting a Starfleet officer, and Worf sometimes finds himself caught between two worlds. He even resigned his post briefly so that he could involve himself in the Klingon civil war. But in all things, Worf holds honor and bravery most dear. He is a valued officer whom I admire a great deal.
"I think you're the bravest man I have ever known."
- Captain Picard to Worf, Star Trek: First Contact |
77 |
|
Dr. Beverly Crusher
"Attached"
I've known Beverly longer than anyone else in my crew. She is an outstanding physician and an ideal Starfleet officer. But the truth is, when I first took command of the Enterprise I did not want Beverly as my chief medical officer. My reasons were strictly personal – I had strong feelings for Beverly and I wasn't sure how I would react to having her aboard. Fortunately, good sense prevailed. The Enterprise – and her captain – have benefited ever since.
"Writing a scene between Picard and Beverly was like uncovering old friends."
- Nicholas Sagan, writer, "Attached" |
78 |
|
Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge
"All Good Things"
I first met Geordi La Forge on a shuttle inspection tour. I commented on a slight inefficiency in the shuttle's engines, and Geordi stayed up all night to fix the problem.
I knew then I wanted him on my crew. When the effects of the Ba'ku world gave Geordi normal sight for the first time in his life, he willingly gave up this incredible gift to help preserve the Ba'ku way of life.
"I read your last novel. I thought the protagonist was a little too flamboyant."
- The future Picard to the future La Forge,
"All Good Things..." |

|
Counselor Deanna Troi
"Thine Own Self"
Deanna Troi has the difficult task of counseling a crew of over 1,000 people from a dozen different planets. Yet she found the time, and the inclination, to undertake the field training program for promotion to full commander. I believe only Will Riker was more proud than I of Deanna when she passed the Bridge Officer Program. She has come to understand that with or without her telepathic abilities, she performs a vital function for my crew.
"Deanna, we need you."
- Captain Picard, "The Loss" |
80 |
|
Chief Miles O'Brien
"The Wounded"
Chief Miles O'Brien spent many years under my command, pulling my crew out of danger at a moment's notice. I was pleased when Mr. O'Brien's appointment to Deep Space Nine afforded him the chance to utilize his talents to the fullest. But our parting was a sad one, as well, for I will miss his familiar presence behind the transporter console.
"Yesterday, I called down here and I asked for you without thinking. It won't be quite the same!"
- Captain Picard to Chief O'Brien, "The Emissary" (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) |
81 |
|
Wesley Crusher
"The First Duty"
At first, I saw Wesley as a presumptuous child playing on my ship. But as I got to know him, I became convinced that he could be an outstanding officer. Then came the painful incident at the Academy involving his squadron. Wes made a terrible mistake that led to a fellow cadet's death. But hadn't I, too, made a grievous mistake during my own Academy days? Wes knew what he had to do – I just made sure he listened to himself.
"Picard is not a guy you want to get mad at you. He just unloads on Wesley. It's absolutely withering!"
- Naren Shankar, co-writer, "The First Duty" |

Q
The U.S.S. Enterprise-D made first contact with Q during the mission to Farpoint Station, but it was not an ideal first contact situation. On the contrary, Q detained the ship and put the entire human race on trial for being "grievously savage." Powerful, intelligent and nearly god-like, Q was also petulant and meddlesome. But Captain Picard and his crew exonerated humanity and lived to experience many more contacts with Q.
TRIVIA:
Ten thousand years ago, the Q Continuum entered a new era of enlightenment. |
F2 |
|
Ferengi
The Federation's first contact with the Ferengi occurred when the U.S.S. Enterprise-D visited the last outpost of the Tkon Empire, on planet Delphi Ardu. The meeting was not a cordial one. Led by Letek, the short, large-eared Ferengi wielded whips that fired high-energy plasma discharges. They were shocked to find that human females are allowed to wear clothing. Federation-Ferengi relations did not improve for quite some time.
TRIVIA:
The Ferengi reached the stars by buying warp technology from others. |
F3 |
|
Borg
It was bound to happen sooner or later, but the Federation might have been better off if first contact with the Borg had never happened. Q made sure contact was made by transporting the U.S.S. Enterprise-D out of Federation space and into the path of a Borg cube. The Borg mission: to assimilate life forms and their technology at any cost. The encounter prompted the Federation to begin preparations for later conflicts with the powerful, part-organic and part-machine Borg.
TRIVIA:
Guinan's people were nearly wiped out by the Borg. |
F4 |
|
Vulcans
Zefram Cochrane's historical first warp flight attracted the attention of a passing space vessel, leading to mankind's first encounter with an extraterrestrial race—the Vulcans. The meeting took on an informal tone, without official dignitaries or world leaders present. The encounter led to centuries of cooperation and friendship between humans and Vulcans, although the latter abandoned emotions long ago and devoted themselves to logic.
TRIVIA:
A marble statue was erected near the historic launch site in Cochrane's honor. |
F5 |
|
Malcorians
There is no starship mission more dangerous than that of first contact. When a door to a new world is opened, how will the newcomers be greeted? What dangers will they face? That's why the Federation conducts surveillance before making contact. Though controversial, this plan prevents more problems than it creates. But in the case of the Malcorians, keeping the surveillance a secret was a mistake. The Malcorians reacted negatively. They simply weren't ready for contact—not yet.
TRIVIA:
The Malcorians targeted the Garth system for their first warp-speed flight. |
F6 |
|
Pakleds
The U.S.S. Enterprise-D's first contact with the Pakleds, a race of pudgy, deceptively simple-looking humanoids, resulted in a dangerous game of subterfuge. The Pakleds said they wanted help to fix their ship, but when Chief Engineer La Forge beamed over to assist them, they held him captive. The Pakleds were smarter than they looked, but La Forge and Commander Riker emerged victorious in the battle of wits.
TRIVIA:
When Lore appeared at Dr. Soong's laboratory, he was wearing Pakled clothing. |
F7 |
|
Mintakans
The Mintakans, a Bronze-age, proto-Vulcan race on Mintaka III, were minding their own matriarchal society when a Federation anthropological field team made accidental first contact. The Mintakans witnessed Federation technology far superior to their own, leading them to believe in a supernatural presence. Captain Picard had to beam the Mintakan leader aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-D to convince her he was not a god.
TRIVIA:
Nuria gave Picard a Mintakan tapestry as a gift. |
F8 |
|
Iyaarans
First contact took on a diflerent complexion when the lyarrans, not the Federation, initiated a covert cultural exchange. Ambassadors Loquel and Byleth studied pleasure and antagonism by prompting appropriate activities with Counselor Troi and Lieutenant Worf. A third ambassador, Voval, assumed human form and tried to experience intimacy with Captain Picard. Though Voval's attempt failed, Picard appreciated the Iyaarans' direct approach.
TRIVIA:
The normal diet of lyaarans consists of bland bioenzymatic supplements. |
F9 |
|
The Trill
The Federation knew of the Trill, but the joined species' true nature wasn't understood until the U.S.S. Enterprise-D crew made a peculiar kind of first contact with Ambassador Odan. Dr. Crusher discovered that Odan was really a symbiotic organism living inside a host body. When Odan's host was injured, Dr. Crusher had to place the symbiont in Riker's body until a new host could arrive. Odan retained the memories of each joining.
TRIVIA:
Some Trill symblonts can be injured by being transported. |

Locutus of Borg
Captain Picard's assimilation by the Borg was a terrible, very personal violation of one of Starfleet's best officers. He fought them with every fiber of his being, but Picard could not stop his transformation into Locutus. In that role, he aided the Borg's attack upon the Federation in which 11,000 were killed. Picard was haunted by the trauma for many years.
"I have nothing to say to you, and will resist you with my last ounce, of strength!"
— Captain Picard, "The Best of Both Worlds* |
AE2 |
|
Thomas Riker
The Enterprise-D found a duplicate Will Riker at Nervala IV, eight years after he had been created by a transporter malfunction. Soon it became clear that the two Rikers were not as alike as they appeared. The duplicate, who chose to use his middle name, Thomas, was less eager to follow orders and more interested in resuming his intimate relationship with Counselor Troi. She was intrigued, but this Riker, like the other, chose to put his career first.
"You always had the better hand… in everything."
— Thomas Riker to Will Riker, "Second Chances" |
AE3 |
|
Jayden
Sent to retrieve fragments of a radioactive probe from Barkon IV, Lt. Commander Data experienced a power surge that induced amnesia. He stumbled into a village, where a young girl named Gia and her father took Data in. Gia became fond of Data and gave him the name Jayden. When she and the rest of the villagers became ill with radiation poisoning, "Jayden" devoted himself to finding a cure.
"I do not know what I am but I am not like you."
— Data to Gia, "Thine Own Self" |
AE4 |
|
De-evolved Klingon
An intron virus swept through the ship, transforming the crew into earlier forms of life from their home worlds. Lieutenant Worf de-evolved into a large, dangerous Klingon creature. Weighing 200 kilograms, the creature was heavily armored with an exoskeleton – and he was anxious to get to Counselor Troi, whom he had bitten earlier in a kind of mating instinct. Captain Picard lured the creature away with Troi's pheromones.
"Before I begin swinging through the ship looking for breakfast, we better find some answers."
— Captain Picard, "Genesis" |
AE5 |
|
Kamin
Love and loss, life and death – Captain Picard experienced an entire adult life as Kamin, a member of the community of Ressik on the planet Kataan. It all happened in 25 minutes, but in that time, Picard – as Kamin – came to love his wife, Eline, and his two children, Meribor and Batai. He also became attached to a special flute. His experience was the result of a Kataan probe designed to make sure the long-dead world was not forgotten.
"A wife, children, grandchildren… those are things Picard has never had a chance to be involved with."
— Peter Allan Fields, co-writer, "The Inner Light" |
AE6 |
|
Major Rakal
When Counselor Deanna Troi woke from sleep and looked in the mirror, the face of a Romulan stared back at her. It was the face of Major Rakal, a Romulan intelligence officer. Troi had been kidnapped and altered to look like Rakal as part of a plot to help a high-ranking Romulan official defect to the Federation. Apprehensive at first, Troi played her role well and the plan succeeded.
"I've gone along with all your plans, now you are going to listen to me!"
— Troi to N'Vek, "Face of the Enemy" |
AE7 |
|
Tarchannen Life Form
Lt. Commander La Forge couldn't explain his strange compulsion to return to Tarchannen III. He had visited the planet five years ago, and now, a DNA-altering parasite was transforming La Forge into a chameleon-like life-form. Luminescent blotches appeared on his body and his fingers fused together. Dr. Crusher was able to return La Forge to normal before the transformation was complete.
"They react on instinct alone.
In another few minutes, I wouldn't have responded to you, Susanna."
— La Forge to Susanna Leiten, "Identity Crisis" |
AE8 |
|
Rivas Jakara
Commander Riker assumed the identity of Rivas Jakara when he participated in the Federation's covert surveillance mission of Malcor III. Unfortunately, Riker was injured during the mission and Malcorian doctors discovered his appearance was a ruse. While he was incarcerated in the hospital, a female nurse infatuated with aliens helped him escape, but Riker was recaptured and was nearly killed by a mob before Captain Picard secured his release.
"I've always wanted to make love with an alien."
— Nurse Lanel to Riker, "First Contact" |
AE9 |
|
Galen
Captain Picard infiltrated a band of mercenaries in an effort to stop their raids of Romulan archeological sites throughout the quadrant. Playing the role of Galen, a smuggler with a talent for appraising artifacts, Picard kept the charade alive by trading blows with Commander Riker. Eventually, Picard broke up the mercenaries and retrieved the ancient, powerful Vulcan artifact called the Stone of Gol.
"More than anything, Star Trek speaks to what Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future was."

O'Brien, Deep Space Nine
I've always felt the Enterprise was the pride of Starfleet. Still, I accepted a promotion to chief of operations on Deep Space Nine. I like a challenge, and the conditions aboard the station certainly were challenging, especially at first. The Cardassian-built transporters occasionally required a good hard kick to operate properly. And without warp drive or even impulse engines, moving the station with just six working thrusters required new tactics. But I have to admit, I've learned to like it here. |
C2 |
|
Worf, Deep Space Nine
After the Enterprise-D's destruction, I joined the crew of Deep Space Nine to investigate a Klingon plot to invade Cardassia. I had been thinking about resigning from Starfleet, but when the mission was over, I remained on Deep Space Nine as strategic operations officer.
However, living on the station was uncomfortable, so I moved into a stateroom aboard the Deflant. I consider myself fortunate to have rejoined the Enterprise for two missions: one against the Borg, the other to protect the Ba'Ku world. |
C3 |
|
Lwaxana Troi, Deep Space Nine
My visits to see Deanna aboard the Enterprise have their perks, to be sure. There's that marvelous Captain Picard, for one thing, and the strong, proud Klingon, Mr. Worf. But I have found a good reason to visit Deep Space Nine now and again, too: Odo. I was taken with him from our first encounter, when we shared some intimate moments in a turbolift. I've gone back to see Odo more than once, and he has become a good friend. |
C4 |
|
Barclay, Voyager
I was working on the Pathfinder project when I became, well, obsessed with Voyager. So what? If an obsession helps me do my job better, it's a sacrifice I am willing to make. With help from the holoaraphic Voyager crew, I developed a theory for establishing two-way communication with the real Voyager. Commander Harkins didn't like it, and Counselor Troi thought I was experiencing a relapse of my holo-addiction. But I was right! Using a micro-wormhole, we did make contact with Captain Janeway for a few precious minutes. |
C5 |
|
La Forge, Voyager
After I was promoted to captain of the Starship Challenger, Starfleet sent me to stop Chakotay and Harry Kim from altering the time line. and I'd be Iying if I said that was easy. As I expected, Chakotay and Kim wouldn't listen to me. I understood their desire to save their Voyager friends in the past, but I had my own crew to worry about, not to mention 15 years of history. Still, had I been in their place. I might have done the same thing. |
C6 |
|
Keiko, Deep Space Nine
When I saw our quarters on Deep Space Nine, the first thing I wanted to do was go visit my mother. I could accept that life on the station would be different than it was on the Enterprise but I couldn't help feeling lost. Starfleet didn't need a botanist on the station. And it was not a good place to raise Molly, either. But then I got to thinking, why not start a school for the kids? That made it work for Molly, and for me, too. |
C7 |
|
Scotty, "Relics"
I was moving to a retirement community at the Norpin Colony when my transport ship hit a Dyson Sphere. The only way to survive was to suspend myself inside a transporter beam, where a ship found me 75 years later. Amazing as it sounds, that ship was the Enterprise! But it wasn't my Enterprise, no bloody A, B, C or D. I felt useless and out of place. Captain Picard loaned me a shuttlecraft, and I departed with that fine lass for new adventures. |
C8 |
|
Spock, "Unification"
While I will always be a man of science, I find myself increasingly drawn to diplomacy as I get older. Some time ago I began to work secretly on Romulus to help bring about a Vulcan-Romulan reunification. Captain Picard was sent to find me, and when he did, he accused me of "cowboy diplomacy" because I had not sought the sanction of the Federation or Vulcan governments. In his own way, picard is as stubborn as another captain of the Enterprise I knew. |
C9 |
|
McCoy. "Encounter at Farpoint"
I may be 137, but I am not old. And I'm not stupid enough to let my atoms be scattered all over kingdom-come by some blasted transporter, even one belonging to the new Enterprise-D. Walking to the shuttle bay with Mr. Data, I was struck by how much he talked like a Vulcan. I guess that's about right—he'll fit right in on a ship named Enterprise. And if he treats her like a lady she'll always bring him home. |
Q1 |
|
"Encounter at Farpoint"
"Bringing the innocent to trial is unfair. But the human race was hardly innocent, which is why I put Captain Picard and his crew on trial to answer the charge of being a grievously savage race. Picard insisted on attempting to prove otherwise, and Farpoint Station was an excellent test. But Picard and his crew discovered the truth of Farpoint Station and freed the life form on the planet. It was a lucky guess." |
Q2 |
|
"Hide and Q"
"Change is at the heart of humanity, but change into what? That's the question. After the Enterprise crew passed my little test at Farpoint Station, I returned to Picard and his people to offer them the realization of impossible dreams. Riker was particularly interesting to me. I gave him the power of Q, but Riker failed to appreciate his incredible good fortune. He would not become Q, and I was summoned back to the Continuum." |
Q3 |

"Q Who?"
"As Picard's vessel was about to move into areas of the galaxy containing unimaginable wonders and frightful terrors, I offered mysell as guide. Picard and his crew wouldn't have me. Still, it was time for them to see if they were ready for the dangers ahead. I introduced them to the Borg, and very quickly, Picard got his nose bloodied. On the verge of annihilation, Picard pleaded for help, and I saved his ship—this time." |
Q4 |
|
"Deja Q"
"My superiors said I spread chaos through the universe. They punished me by stripping me of my powers and banishing me from the Continuum. With only a fraction of a second to choose my mortal form, I asked to be made human and was sent to the Enterprise for protection from my enemies. Then the Calamarain attacked, and I surprised everyone—including myself—by putting the lives of Jean-Luc and his crew ahead of my own. For my selfless act, the Continuum returned my powers." |
Q5 |
|
"Qpid"
"I had a debt to repay Jean-Luc, and it gnawed at me continually. But when I came to pay up, he chose to be difficult. Nevertheless, I cast Picard as Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest and nudged him into rescuing Vash, as Maid Marian, from Nottingham Castle. I played the Lord High Sheriff myself - what fun these games are! Picard succeeded in saving "Marian," but in the process, I proved that he still cares for Vash. My debt was paid." |
Q6 |
|
"True Q"
"Two Q once assumed human form and, in vulgar human fashion, they conceived a child, Amanda. Her powers began to emerge on the Enterprise. I was sent to investigate, and if she was truly Q, I would bring her back to the Continuum where she belonged. On the other hand, if Amanda were some sort of hybrid, she would be terminated. Ultimately I gave her a choice: return with me, or stay with humans and never use her powers again. Amanda found she couldn't resist, and she accepted the truth: she was Q." |
Q7 |
|
"Tapestry"
"I gave Picard something most mortals never experience: a second chance at life. Yet all he could do was complain. Picard wanted to be less arrogant and undisciplined in his youth… less like me. But when he avoided the fight with the Nausicaan, he became a man who never took advantage of his opportunities and never got noticed by anyone. Only then did he realize his mistake. I gave Picard a second gift: the chance to put things back the way they were."
|
Q8 |
|
"All Good Things, Part I"
"Mortals such as Captain Picard see time in such a linear way. His trial—and that of humanity—had never ended. The Q Continuum never reached a verdict. For seven years we watched Picard's ape-like race, hoping it would demonstrate growth and room for expansion. Now it was time to pass final judgment: guilty! Humanity was guilty of being inferior. It was time to put an end to Picard's trek through the stars. Humanity would be destroyed, but not because of me. Picard himself would do it." |
Q9 |
|
"All Good Things, Part II"
"Picard sought answers to the anti-time anomaly, but it was not for me to supply them. I did see to it that Picard had help—his past and future selves. Finally Picard solved the paradox: He had caused the anomaly with a tachyon pulse in three different time periods. Picard saved humanity once again. We wanted to see whether he could expand his mind, and for one brief moment, he did. The exploration that awaits humanity is the charting of unknown possibilities of existence." |
