ML-1 |
|
During a routine "duck-blind" study of the Ba'ku settlement, USS Enterprise-E officer Lieutenant Commander Data attacks members of the joint Starfleet/Son'a scientific team. for unknown reasons, he neither acknowledges Starfleet protocols, nor responds to any of their hails. He subsequently destroys the outpost's cloaking device, revealing the presence of the mission personnel to the Ba'ku. then holds them hostage. |

ML-2 |
|
Aboard the Son'a flagship. Ahdar Ru'afo inspects the results of a rejuvenating facial. Admiral Dougherty, the Starfeet liaison on the Ba'ku mission, watches nearby. Son'a excesses discomfort him. He also finds that Ru'afo has his own ideas about how to proceed with the task at hand. The Son'a officer insists that Federation procedures have made their mission more difficult than it needed to be. It is a pointed reference to the disruptive malfunction of the Starfeet android, Lieutenant Commander Data. |

ML-3 |
|
Captain Picard orders the USS Enterprise-E to the Ba'ku planet to recover Lieutenant Commander Data. While en route, he examines star charts and other astrometric data relating to the region of space called the Briar Patch. It is full of supernova remnants, false vacuum fluctuations, and low levels of metaphasic radiation. He finds nothing to warrant Admiral Dougherty's warnings of a hazardous environment. |
5
ML-4 |
|
Lieutenant Commander Data has been brought back to the USS Enterprise-E, but remains in stasis. Following a careful examination, Lieutenant Commander LaFoge determines why Data has suffered such a serious malfunction – his memory engrams were damaged by a Son'a weapon. However, the Son'a reports claim they didn't fire until after Data malfunctioned. Captain Picard wants more answers – from Data himself. But when Data is reactivated, he begins to sing. |
6
ML-5 |
|
Captain Picard returns to the planet looking for answers. He wants to retrace Lieutenant Commander Data's steps to find out where he was when his systems failed. Twelve-year-old Artim leads the captain with a group of Ba'ku into the hills becond the village. But the boy is afraid of Data. The last time he saw the android, Data was running through the village surrounded by lightning blasts. Lieutenant Commander Data is distressed that he did not make a very good first impression. |
7
ML-6 |
|
Captain Picard has discovered the cloaked holo-ship hidden on the planet and guessed its covert purpose. When he confronts Ru'afo and Admiral Dougherty, he is surprised to learn that the Federation Council has approved of the secret mission. The Prime Directive has been grossly disregarded. The principles Picard has spent a lifetime defending have suddenly been called into question. And now he has an even harder decision to make. |
8
ML-7 |
|
The Son'a commander, Ru'afo, undergoes what he hopes will be a final face-lift. In a few hours the Ba'ku will be gone, and the radiation field surrounding their planet will be converted into a fountain of youth for his race. But until then, he and his people must depend on the highly advanced surgical methods practiced so deftly by their Tarlac and Elloran servants. |
9
ML-8 |
|
Ru'afo greets his second-in-command, Gallatin, who has finally returned from the planet. The Subahdar confesses it was not easy to be among the Ba'ku. The commander sympathizes – briefly. Then he orders Gallatin to get the holding cells ready. He plans to round up the colonists openly now. The holo-ship has been discovered, so secrecy does not matter any more. Nothing will stand in the way of accomplishing this mission. |
10
ML-9 |
|
Ru'afo is satisfied to see the USS Enterprise-E break orbit and leave the Ba'ku solar system. However, his mood turns malevolent when he is informed that the starship has launched the Captain's Yacht, which is now headed down to the planet. The report states there are five people on board, and Ru'afo can guess who it is – and what it means. He orders Gallatin to begin removing the Ba'ku immediately. And if Picard gets in his way – eliminate him. |
11
ML-10 |
|
Captain Picard guides the Ba'ku colonists away from their village like Moses leading the Exodus. Their only hope of safety lies in the nearby hills, where kelbonite deposits in the rocks will protect them from Son'a transporters. After that, they will be able to hide in the mountain caves. Picard knows that the Son'a plans for the planet will remain stalled as long as the Ba'ku are on the surface. |
12
ML-11 |
|
Artim struggles to reconcile what his father has said about machines and the exeriences he has had with Data. Gradually, however, his fear is replaced by a youthful curiosity. There are things he never knew about being an android. An android does not rust, or grow, or even play. And Artim is surprised to learn that Data has often wondered what it might be like to be a little boy. |
13
ML-12 |
|
Son'a shuttles swoop down on the long, slow-moving line of colonists, who scalter for cover. Efforts to beam up the Ba'ku en masse have been blocked by transporter inhibitors and kelbonite deposits in the rocks, so now the Son'a deploy a more one-on-one method – drones that shoot isolinear markers. Tag, you're out. Picard and his team pick off the drones with phaser fire, but make little headway against the threat. |
14
ML-13 |
|
Commander Riker races to clear the Briar Patch and send a message to Starfeet, but Son'a ships pursue. Unable to pinpoint the location of the USS Enterprise-E in the swirling mass of a nebular cluster, the Son'a detonate an isolytic burst, ripping apart subspace. The starship's warp core acts like a magnet, dragging the tear after the Enterprise. The only option is to eject the core. |
15
ML-14 |
|
Forced to fight, the USS Enterprise-E struggles with damaged systems and minimal shields. Commander Riker has taken a defensive stance throughout the battle, but now all that is about to change. Although his ship is a shambles, he decides to turn the tables. Commander Riker plans a bold strategy – to use the ram-scoop of the USS Enterprise-E to collect and compress the volatile nebula gasses to critical mass, then direct them like a weapon against the Son'a. |
16
ML-15 |
|
Picard is beamed up with a group of Ba'ku into a large holding cell on the Son'a flagship. Taking the offensive, he confronts Admiral Dougherty and challenges his actions. When Picard learns that the Enterprise has been fired on by Son'a ships, he accuses the admiral of approving the attack. Dougherty's dignity, and authority, crumbles. |
17
ML-16 |
|
Ru'afo holds back his rage. He is finished with deferring to Admiral Dougherty and the Federation. He decides that this is going to end, now. If the Ba'ku want to stay on the planet, then let them. He will launch the Thermolytic Collector and siphon the metaphasic radiation that surrounds the planet. In six hours, every living thing in the system will be dead. . . or dying. |
18
ML-17 |
|
It is revealed that the Son'a and the Ba'ku are the same species. A century earlier, a group of young Ba'ku malcontents tried to take over the colony. The attempt failed, and they were forced to leave the planet – and the life-renewing metaphasic radiation. They fled into space to become the Son'a, and have been slowly dying ever since, trying to retain their youth by means of the Body Enhancement Facilities. |
19
ML-18 |
|
Admiral Dougherty learns the truth behind Ru'afo's hidden agenda – to exact revenge upon the Ba'ku who exiled him from the colony world. But the knowledge carries a deadly price lag. The Son'a commander forces the admiral into one of the trealment chairs in the Body Enhancement Facility, and gives him a fatal facelift. |
20
ML-19 |
|
Ru'afo sets a countdown for the end of the Ba'ku world, but he is betrayed by Gallatin and Captain Picard, who transport him aboard the holo-ship. He screams with rage at the discovery that he is no longer on the bridge of the Son'a flagship, but on a holographic duplicate instead. |
21
ML-20 |
|
On the bridge of the Son'a flagship, Lieutenant Commander Worf realizes that the Thermolytic Collector countdown has resumed. In less than three minutes, all life on the Ba'ku planet will be destroyed. There is only one person who could have reset the separation protocols – Ru'afo. |
22
ML-21 |
|
Ru'afo clambers through the maze of access tunnels, crawling toward the Thermolutic Collector array. He is determined to see it launched and his mission of revenge completed. Although Captain Picard succeeds in disconnecting the ignition module – deactivating the collector – the array is launched nonetheless, and takes Ru'afo with it into the radiation field. The metaphasic energies revert him to middle age, adolescence childhood infancy and beyond. |
23
ML-22 |
|
The colony world is saved, and it is time for the rift between the Ba'ku and the Son'a to be closed. Gallatin is reunited with his mother, leading the way for the others to do the same. Meanwhile, Commander Riker wonders if his "reunion" with Counselor Troi will last once they leave the planet and its rejuvenating metaphasic radiation. And Lieutenant Commander Data gets a lesson in playtime from young Artim. |
24
ML-23 |
|
Anij and Captain Picard know it is time for them to part. He must go back. These are perilous times for the Federation and he will not abandon it to people who would threaten what he has spent a lifetime defending. But he does have three hundred and eighteen days of vacation time coming, and he plans on using them. |

CAPTAIN JEAN-LUC PICARD
Captain Jean-Luc Picard is the commanding officer of the Starfeet flagship USS Enterprise NCC 1701-E. His previous assignment was command of the USS Enterprise-D, which was destroyed on the planet Veridian III. Picard's career in Starfeet has been marked with several notable highlights, among them the defeat of a Borg time ship and the Borg Queen herself. Most recently, he was responsible for exposing the covert mission to remove the Ba'ku colonists from their world so that the planet's unique radiation fields could be exploited. |
53
P-2 |
|
COMMANDER WILLIAM T. RIKER
Commander William T. Riker is First Officer of the USS Enterprise-E. The post is a continuation of the position he held on the USS Enterprise-D, which was destroyed in action in 2371. Although Commander Riker's stand on allowing his commanding offer to go on dangerous Away missions has been outspoken at times, he has shown exceptional ability while in command of the Enterprise when the captain has been absent. He was instrumental in recovering Captain Picard from the Borg Collective in 2267, and his recent actions against the Son'a task force saved the Enterorisp-E and its crew from destruction. |
54
P-3 |
|
LIEUTENANT COMMANDER DATA
Lieutenant Commander Data is an android designed and constructed by the renowned cyberneticist, Dr. Noonien Soong. He is the only android serving in Starfleet. His post is the Ops position on the bridge of the USS Enterorise-E. Lieutenant Commander Data's positronic systems are protected by automatic fail-safe protocols. While on his recent mission to observe the Ba'ku colony, these systems were compromised. This resulted in events that exposed the Son'a and Starfeet task force to the Ba'ku settlers. Investigation of the unusual malfunction led to the discovery of a secret plan to remove the Ba'ku from their home. |
55
P-4 |
|
COUNSELOR DEANNA TROI
Commander Troi holds the post of Ship's Counselor aboard the USS Enterprise-E. Troi is half Betazoid, and although she is not a full telepath like natives of that planet, she has empathic abilities that have aided her as Counselor, and have served Captain Picard and the Enterprise in a number of situations. It might be speculated that the unique radiation fields surrounding the Ba'ku blanet were the reason why Commander Troi did not sense the ulterior motives of the Son'a before their true intentions became apparent. The effects of metaphasic radiation on Betazoid cerebral physiology were unknown prior to this encounter, and remain to be studied. |
56
P-5 |
|
DR. BEVERLY CRUSHER
Dr. Beverly Crusher is the Chief Medical Officer on the USS Enterprise-E. It is a post she has held since the ship was launched in 2372. Prior to that, she served in the same capacity aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Dr. Crusher is also a certified Command Officer. An expert in a wide range of xeno-biological fields and related disciplines. Dr. Crusher was the one who made the medical discovery of the connection between the Son'a and the Ba'ku. This information enabled Cantain Picard to take informed action in the crisis that ultimately developed. |
57
P-6 |
|
LIEUTENANT COMMANDER GEORDI LaFORGE
Lieutenant Commander LaForge is the Chief Engineer aboard the USS Enterprise-E. It is a post he has maintained since his assignment to the position on the USS Enterprise-D in 2365. LaForge replaced his VISOR in 2371 with ocular implants. Recently, however, after a period of exposure to the metaphasic radiation surrounding the Ba'ku world, the cells around the ocular connectors regenerated. LaForge attained normal human sight for the first time in his life. This event was a vital piece of evidence that led Captain Picard to realize that the planet could be an extremely valuable asset to the dying Son'a race. |
58
P-7 |
|
LIEUTENANT COMMANDER WORF
Lieutenant Commander Worf was temporarily assigned to the Tactical position on the bridge of the USS Enterprise-E for the duration of the Ba'ku/Son'a conflict. His normal duty assignment is on Deep Space Nine. Worf was the first Klingon ever to join Starfleet, and he has brought the proud warrior heritage of that culture to the service of his commanding officers. He was instrumental in the planning and execution of the Ba'ku escape operation when the colony came under attack by the Son'a. He also exhibited his considerable skills in hand-to-hand combat while defending the colonists. |
59
P-8 |
|
ADMIRAL MATTHEW DOUGHERTY
Admiral Matthew Dougherty's last assignment was as Starfleet liaison to the Son'a scientific mission to observe the Ba'ku culture. An official investigation is pending to determine his knowledge of, and complicity in, the Son'a attempt to forcibly remove the Ba'ku colonists from their planet. Admiral Dougherty has had several decades of loyal service to Starfeet, and the Federation Council itself appointed him to the Ba'ku mission. His awards and commendations include some of the highest in Starfeet. Sadly, it must he noted that Admiral Dougherty lost his life during the course of this final assignment. |
60
P-9 |
|
RU'AFO
Ru'afo is the Adhar – or Commander – of the Son'a scientific task force, part of a joint mission with Starfleet to conduct a sociological study of the Ba'ku culture. When he was a young man, Ru'afo experienced a series of devastaling personal events which ultimately led him to abandon his home, family, and friends. He chagced his name from Ro'tin to Ru'afo, and began his life anew. |
61
P-10 |
|
GALLATIN
Gallatin is the Subahdar – or Second-in-Command – of the Son'a scientific task force in a joint operation with the Federation in the study of the Ba'ku. Early in his life, Gallatin was known as Gal'na. He changed his name following a social split between his people, and left his home planet. More recent events and discoveries have led him to regret that decision, and to reconcile with those he left behind. |
62
P-11 |
|
ANIJ
Anij is a well-respected member of the Ba'ku community. She is a skilled artisan and teacher. Although she, like the rest of her people, has a knowledge of sophisticated technologies, her philosophies lead her to reject them in favor of more metaphysical pursuits. However, she has never learned to swim. |
63
P-12 |
|
SOJEF
Sojef is the leader of the Ba'ku community, and is the father of a son, Artim. Sojef was witness to a sad chapter in the history of the colony. An insurrection of a group of their young people forced him to authorize their exile, banishing them from family and friends. He has had to live with that memory every day since. |
64
P-13 |
|
ARTIM
Artim is the twelve-year-old son of Sojef, leader of the Ba'ku colony. He likes to climb trees and play hide-and-seek with his friends. He also has a favorite palm-pet, which he carries with him everywhere. Artim's encounter with Data taught him not to be afraid of "offlanders" and technology – both of which his society has renounced. |

AR-1 |
|
SON'A
In Starfleet records, the Son'a are listed as nomadic, and collectors of precious metals and jewels. They are also known to have engaged in the manufacture of vast quantities of the narcotic ketracel-white. One of that substance's applications is employed by the Dominion to control their Jem'Hadar armed forces. The Son'a are also recorded as having conquered the Tarlac and Elloran races half a century ago, and now use them as laborers and indentured servants. It was unknown until recently that the Son'a and the Ba'ku are the same species. Following a social split, the Son'a left the beneficial environment of the Ba'ku colony world, and have since become a dying race. |
66
AR-2 |
|
BA'KU
The Ba'ku are a humanoid species originally from an unspecified planet somewhere in the galaxy. Just over three hundred years ago, a group of colonists left the homeworld because they believed that their culture was on the verge of technological self-annihilation. The colonists sought a new home, one that was isolated from other technological races. They found that home on a planet in the section of Federation space known as the "Briar Patch." Metaphasic radiation surrounding that world produced an unanticipated bonus – it regenerated the biological functions of the colonists, rendering them virtually immortal. |
67
AR-3 |
|
ELLORAN
The Ellorans are a humanoid species from a planet outside the Federation sphere of influence, and are distinctive for their saurian cranial ridges and delicate pigmentation. They were considered a primitive race by the Son'a, who conquered them fifty years ago. The Son'a now employ them as a labor class. A majority of the young Elloran women are used as servants in Son'a Body Sculpture Chambers, where they perform rejuvenation and enhancement treatments on the Son'a. |
68
AR-4 |
|
TARLAC
The Tarlac are another race that was conquered by the Son'a at about the same time as the Ellorans. They are a humanoid species native to a world not affliated with the Federation of Planets. The Tarlac comprise a functional labor class in Son'a society, the males serving as bodyguards and soldiers in most cases. On Son'a ships, however, the Tarlac are utilized at all levels of duty except, of course, command. |
69
AR-5 |
|
CUZAR
The Cuzar are a humanoid species distinguished by a complex cranial structure and a comparatively diminutive stature. Whereas they are new to the United Federation of Planets, little is known about their culture or heritage. However, recent experience has indicated that they might be vegetarians, and may prefer a floral diet. |
70
AR-6 |
|
BOLIAN
The Bolians are a humanoid species native to the planet Bolarus IX. They are characterized by their distinctive blue skin and facial ridge. The Bolians are members of the Federation, and are well-represented within the ranks of Starfleet. The appear to be a space-loving race, and can be found in almost every region of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. |
71
AR-7 |
|
TRILL
The Trill are a joined species comprised of a vermiform symbiont and humanoid host. A notable physical trait among the vast maiority of this group is the intricate pattern of dermal soots that run from the hairline to their feet. Although the life span of the host body is equivalent to that of most humanoid species, that of the symbiont is much more long-lived. Upon the death of its host it is transferred into a new on. Thus the symbiont can continue for many generations. |
72
AR-8 |
|
VULCAN
The Vulcans are a humanoid race notable for their pointed ears and eyebrows. Their blood chemistry is copper-based, and appears green when exposed to oxygen. Vulcans are capable of a limited telepathy, but they must be in physical contact with the subiect in most cases. Mental and emotional discipline is a hallmark of Vulcan society. Their culture has been based on logic for thousands of years. In the twenty-first century, the Vulcans made "First Contact" with Earth, an event that many consider paved the way for the Federation of Planets. |

|
USS Enterprise-E
In Star Trek: Insurrection, there are sections of the new USS Enterprise-E design that are seen in use for the first time. When he first designed the Sovereign-class starship, John Eaves included details that he knew might not be filmed, but which had to exist nonetheless. A major visual element is the massive shuttlebay that cuts a wide swath at the back of the saucer section. Eaves incorporated a control deck with observation windows as an homage to the shuttlebay design of the original USS Enterprise. |
S2 |
|
Core Dump
There's a first time for everything. Because it had never been seen on the big screen before, it was necessary for designer John Eaves to choreograph an "official and approved" core dump sequence. The layering of heavily-shielded hatches visually reinforces the hazard being portrayed. It's not meant to be easy to eject a warp core. |
S3 |
|
Federation Scout Ship
When the script called for action, designer John Eaves complied with enthusiasm. He needed to create a ship that was fast and maneuverable but did not have to conform to regular Starfleet-issue contours. Even with that freedom, Eaves found the best design was one he had developed that was based on the USS Defiant. |
S4 |
|
Enterprise-E Shuttle
Although every Federation shuttlecraft follows the same basic shape – main body and two nacelles – designer John Eaves found it a challenge to "tweak" those basic elements in ways that were new and exciting. One subtle new addition, which is now canon, is the placement of the main hatch. Instead of being on the side, it is now on the back of every shuttle in the fleet. |
S5 |
|
Captain's Yacht
The Captain's Yacht came with a few constraints for designer John Eaves. It had to deploy from a location on the saucer section that had been a torpedo launcher in Star Trek: First Contact, but which was now converted into the yacht's launch bay for Insurrection. As a result, the yacht was much larger than it might normally have been. simply because it had to fit the space that preexisted. |
S6 |
|
Son'a Collector Ship
Designer John Eaves was allowed free rein when creating the look of the ships for the "new aliens" – the Son'a. The basic idea for the Collector Ship was approved quickly enough but the details of the thermolytic "sails" were a much slower and pain-staking process. Since Eaves sketches went directly to CGI, extremely precise blueprints had to be drawn up. No three-dimensional models were used. |
S7 |
|
Son'a Ship
The Son'a ships went through the longest rounds of design and re-design. Producer Rick Berman had final approval on all designs, but the Son'a proved to be the greatest challenge. Designer John Eaves found the answers in a most unlikely spot – on the inside of a piano. He became inspired by the patterns of the strings and the instrument's inner structures, and adapted these elements into the design of the ships. |
S8 |
|
Ru'afo's Ship
Sometimes a screenplay calls for a "bad" design. Ru'afo's ship had to reflect the character's sinister purpose, so designer John Eaves began with a horseshoe shape and then made it aggressive. Originally, Eaves meant for the sharply tapered prongs to be at the front of the ship, but everyone else thought they were the back of the ship. The majority won, and the prongs became the back of the ship. |
S9 |
|
Holo-Ship
Michael Piller gave no instructions in the screenplay about how this new ship should look – exceptt that the first time it is "seen" it is invisible! Desiogner John Eaves established a freighter-like silhouette, then scaled it up so that it would be able to hold six hundred colonists. And, although almost every other set was built from scratch, the bridge of the holo-ship was a re-use of the Phoenix cockpit. |

Picard
Veteran costume designer Robert Blackman faced the task of creating all-new dress uniforms for the members of Starfleet – without duplicating anything he had already done in his long Star Trek career. The challenge was to put a new twist on a formula he himself helped to establish. Blackman dipped into Navy tradition to find the starting point for the short jackets and braid work, then incorporated the quilted yolks to reflect the current Starfleet duty uniforms. Rank is determined by the color of the stripes on sleeves and pant legs. But only Captain Picard wears the white shirt. |

Data
Insurrection may have been costume designer Sonia Hayes' first Star Trek assignment, but as a science fiction fan she knows her way around the galaxy. Civilian costumes for the renegade crew members had to express a 24th-century look, yet retain a style established for the Federation. The first step on that road for Hayes was to eliminate all closures – there are no visible buttons or zippers in Starfleet. Costumes were custom-dyed a "strong blue" so that the principle actors would stand out in the crowd of extras. |

|
Worf
The double bandoleer of Worf's civilian costume is a reference to the honors sash he normally wears over his duty uniform. It took three layers of material to achieve just the right on-camera look. But when it came to Picard, designer Sonia Hayes wanted him to wear something different from the rest of his crew. Since he was a rebel in the story, she put him in leather. |

|
ANIJ
Costumes for the Ba'ku were the first designs to come off Sonia Hayes' drawing board for Insurrection, and were the beginning of an intense eight-week process of approvals and fittings. The fabric used for Anij's skirt wrap was a custom-manufactured cellulose. Ironically it took modern-day methods to create a "primitive" homespun look. |

|
CUZAR
Since the Cuzar were only to he spen briefty at the start of Insurrection, and nothing had been established about them, designer Sonia Hayes was given the freedom to go as far as she wanted with their costumes. In order to make them look even shorter than they were, Hayes designed a back piece that made them appear wider, using a special pleated fabric that could be "sculpted" into the shape specific to her needs. The jeweled fabric for the body of the Cuzar costumes was designed by Hayes and manufactured to order. |

|
ARTIM
Designer Sonia Hayes selected a special fabric pattern for the vest of Artim's costume so that the boy would catch the eye of the audience in the crowd scenes. There were literally hundreds of extras during the filming of the Ba'ku exodus, and costumes had to be made for all of them. Hayes mandated a neutral, "background" beige for them, a backdrop for the principle actors. |

|
ELLORAN WOMAN
Sometimes the simplest-looking design turns out ta be the most complex to accomoplish. Designer Sonia Hayes had to custom-dye a golden-bronze latex for the female Elloran and Tarlac attendants, then airbrush highlights on each individual actress. The body-hugging nature of the rubber required special support, undergarments. Latex was chosen because the costumes needed to reflect a "lab" environment, but still had to make the characters look sexy. |

|
TARLAC MAN
For her costume designs for Insurrection, Sonia Hayes called upon her experience working on science fiction films such as Stargate, Independence Day, and Blade. She knew what had been done before in the Star Trek films, having seen all of them, as well as most of the television episodes. Not wanting to duplicate any costuming themes, she consulted Robert Blackman, who showed her the "legacy" of Star Trek designs he had created over the years. |

|
SON'A MAN
Insurrection costume designer Sonia Hayes found the Son'a to be an interesting challenge. They were a seeming contradiction of smooth luxury and hard-edged military. Hayes turned to color and texture to combine the two themes. Jumpsuits were made of a sleek urethane dyed a special shade of "army" green, then bright metal accents were added. Vests were a soft, elegant velvet that was pleated to create an exotic look. The costumes reflect the characters perfectly. |

SON'A TACTICAL DISPLAY
For Star Trek: Insurrection scenic art designer Michael Okuda, inventing alien ideograms is all in a day's work. For the new aliens, the Son'a, he went into Earth history to find just the right root for their written language. Cuneiform provided the perfect foundation on which to build. It also formed the basis of the Ba'ku language, creating a subtle visual clue to the fact that they and the Son'a would later be revealed as being the same race. |

|
SON'A TACTICAL TABLE
Designer Michael Okuda was responsible for integrating a variety of visual elements created by several artists on the Son'a sets. The Tactical Table was mainly the work of Geoffrey Mandel, whose work on Space, Above and Beyond and the X-Files hat already taken him where no man has gone before. The control panels were designed by Alan Kobayashi, a veteran of Babylon 5 and Star Trek: The Next Generation. |

|
SON'A BRIDGE
Al the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle came together on the set of the Son'a Bridge. Scenic designer Michael Okuda's video graphics displays melded with Herman Zimmerman's set designs, and incorporated stand-up displays by Kurt Hanson, which surrounded the command chair designed by John Eaves. |

|
SON'A SHIP'S SYSTEMS DISPLAY
Many of the graphics displays designed by Michael Okuda for Star Trek: Insurrection were static images, photo transparencies mounted on backlit panels. However, the Ship's Systems Display got a little special trealment. Two Macintosh computers fed live images to the Kurt Hanson-designed monitor during the filming. |

|
SON'A BODY ENHANCEMENT DISPLAY
When scenic designer Michael Okuda needed an inventory of body parts for visual displays in the Son'a Body Enhancement Facility, he went to friends and colleagues. He snapped photographs of as many eyes and ears as possible, then incorporated them into his designs. Deep in the background on the set, one such display features a morphed Vulcan ear. |

|
SON'A BODY ENHANCEMENT EQUIPMENT
The video graphics designed by Michael Okuda were one of several elements that defined the Son'a. Ed Natividad created control panels with custom-cast buttons, and exotic medical instruments that put a bizarre twist on the familiar. The chairs in the Body Enhancement Facility were based on dentists chairs, but with a dangerous elegance added. |

|
USS ENTERPRISE-E BRIDGE DISPLAY
Scenic art designer Michael Okuda did not incorporate major changes to the Master Situation Display panel on the Bridge of the USS Enterprise-E from what was seen in Star Trek: First Contact because he considers a certain continuity vital. He wanted the Bridge to remain familiar. However, there were a few subtle additions to the almost thirty video displays utilized on the set. There always are. |
OK-8 |
|
USS ENTERPRISE-E LIBRARY DISPLAY
The Library was something new for the USS Enterprise-E, and scenic designer Michael Okuda found it to be an opportunity to include a few personal favorites on screen. The John Eaves-designed Vulcan Lander from Star Trek: First Contact has a certain historical significance, and Okuda insisted that a representation of a Titan rocket be included on the Apollo 11 display. |

|
USS ENTERPRISE-E PADD DISPLAYS
Sometimes it pays to stick with the classics. The Starfleet padd designs were originally created by Rick Sternbach back in the days of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The devices have seen active duty ever since, and all scenic art designer Michael Okuda had to do with them for Star Trek: Insurrection was to add in a few new graphics. All in a day's work. |

ANIJ and PICARD
The first time the Ba'ku colonist Anij saw Captain Jean-Luc Picard, she asked him if he was her enemy. From that somewhat antagonistic start, neither could have guessed that each of them would eventually form a close personal appreciation of the other. Picard lives immersed in a word of technology, a world Anij long ago rejected. Yet they came together in common purpose – to sove the da ho colony from an enemy that would have destroyed it. |

ARTIM and DATA
Twelve-gear-old Artim's first meeting with Lieutenant Commander Data was precipitous. However, Data was not quite himself. But Artim slowly came to know and accept the android and even be a little in awe of him. Data took the Ba'ku boy's curiosity in [his] stride, and in several instances reciprocared it. From Artim, Data learned what it might be like to be a child – and how to play. |

ADM. DOUGHERTY and RU'AFO
The Son'a commander, Ru'afo, and Starfeet Admiral Matthew Dougherty started out as allies, although uneasy ones. The admiral was uncomfortable with the Son'a from the beginning, and it only grew as the mission progessed. Ru'afo had his own agenda, and saw Admiral Dougherty as an impediment. Eventually, he removed that impediment – permanently. Dougherty did not see Ru'afo's megalomania until it was too late. |

|
TROI and RIKER
Commander William Riker was just beginning his Starfeet career when he first met Deanna Troi, who was then a psychology student on Betazed. Even though they later drifted apart over the years, their love remained, and settled to a deep and comforting level. That status quo was shaken for a time when Thomas Riker briefly brought back their old passion. And now, on the Ba'ku mission, it has surfaced once more. Neither knows where it will lead, but they have the opportunity to find out. |

|
CRUSHER and PICARD
In an alternate time-line, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Dr. Beverly Crusher were married, and divorced. That has not happened – yet – in our reality, but the captain and the doctor have a history together. Picard infroduced Crusher fo her husband, but fell in love with her himself in the process. He submerged those feelings for years, even after the death of Crusher's hushand. Years later, when those feelings were forced to the surface, Picard remained the picture of propriety. And only Dr. Crusher knows how she feels about that. |

|
DATA and LaFORGE
Lieutenant Commander LaForge's friendship with his android shipmate goes back to their first days on the USS Enterprise-D. There, LaForge held the Conn position on the Bridge while Lieutenant Commander Data manned Ops, and then worked side-by-side for a year. Data often looks to LaForge in his ongoing efforts to become more human. It was LaForge who encouraged Data to keep the emotion chip that his "father", Dr. Noonien Soong, had created for him, even though his "brother" Lore had misused it. |
R7 |
|
PICARD and RIKER
Captain Jean-Luc Picard chose Commander Riker as his First Officer sight unseen. He was impressed with the fact that Riker had refused to let his captain beam down on a dangerous Away mission. Since joining Captain Picard's command, Riker has passed up several offers of promotion in order to remain with Picard and the USS Enterprise. Riker's unswerving loyalty to his commanding officer has been demonstrated time and again, but most notable during the Federation's initial confict with the Borg. Riker rescued Picard from the Borg when he had been made an unwilling accomplice in the battle of Wolf 359. |

|
DATA and WORF
Lieutenant Commanders Worf and Data both represent Starfeet "firsts". Worf is the first Klingon to join Starfleet, and Data is fine first android to do so. However, this commonality has never produced a sense of competition between the two. The only times in which they opposed each other were during the weekly poker games on board the USS Enterprise-D. |

|
RU'AFO and PICARD
Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Ahdar Ru'afo are both men of deep conviction and dedication. But the Ba'ku mission proved that these common qualities were focused on diametrically opposing goals. While Capfain Picard was prepared lo sacrifice his Starfleet career, and even his life, to preserve the Ba'ku colonisis and their world, Ru'afo was determined to bring about their ruin for his own gain. Ultimately, Picard's selflessness prevailed over Ru'afo's avarice. |
