Burnham and Booker visit the planet Alshain I, and invite the butterfly-like people of that world to join the Federation. The skeptical aliens become aggressive when they learn Booker keeps a carnivorous animal "captive" aboard his ship. While running from the Alshain, Burnham realizes that the aliens have lost the ability to navigate as they fly. The crew aboard the Discovery finds a network of broken satellites in orbit above the planet which controls the Alshain's navigation ability. Discovery repairs the satellites as a goodwill gesture, which leads to a tentative peace with the Alshain. |

Having returned to his home world of Kaminar to mentor the lost Kelpien Su'Kal, Saru has become an important figure among his planet's ruling body. Given the title "Great Elder," Saru provides a steadying voice among his colleagues who are determined to prevent another Burn. Su'Kal reassures the skeptical Kelpien Council that he will not cause another Burn since he no longer lives on the dilithium planet. Saru confirms Su'Kal's claim. |

Federation President Laira Rillak presides over a ceremony reopening Starfleet Academy after 125 years. Following the ceremony, Starfleet receives a distress call from a station near Booker's home planet, Kwejian. Admiral Vance assigns Discovery to investigate. President Rillak insists on joining the mission to see Discovery's spore drive in action. When the ship arrives, it discovers the space station damaged and nearing destruction. |
4 |
On his home planet of Kwejian, Booker participates in a sacred ceremony with his brother Kyheem and nephew Leto, celebrating the boy's ascension into manhood. Booker and Kyheem share a moment together, but their reflective quiet is suddenly shattered as hundreds of birds circle above them, making unusual noises and flying in erratic patterns. Booker takes his ship skyward to investigate the chaotic scene. |
5 |
Tilly and Adira board the damaged space station near Kwejian to effect repairs. Their assignment quickly turns into a rescue mission as incoming debris caused by a gravitational anomaly slam into the station and Discovery. Against Rillak's protests, Burnham flies a worker bee to clear enough debris for the station's escape pod to get most of its crew to safety. Tilly, Adira and the station's commander Nalas escape the station just moments before its destruction, though Nalas doesn't survive. |
6 |
Booker watches in horror as hundreds of birds fall from the Kwejian sky. He pleads with Kyheem to get Leto to safety, just as a massive gravitational wave slams into the planet. Meanwhile, aboard Discovery, Burnham and Rillak clash over the principles of command. Their conversation is interrupted when Booker returns safely to Discovery. He soon learns the grim reality that the gravitational anomaly that damaged the space station has destroyed Kwejian and its billions of inhabitants. |
7 |
Unable to comfort Booker following the destruction of his home world, Burnham returns to her ready room, where she finds Saru. The Kelpien, confident that his protege Su'Kal is now safe on Kaminar, volunteers to serve as First Officer aboard Discovery. Burnham accepts, and they soon join a Federation Council briefing about the gravitational anomaly that destroyed Kwejian. Stamets reveals the anomaly is massive and appears to be heading toward the Riscot system. Discovery investigates further. |

Using "The Soong Method" that 800 years earlier created a synthetic body for Starfleet Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, Dr. Culber creates an android body that will hold Gray's consciousness. This android shell will age and function like a normal human body. Gray makes a few adjustments so that it will feel more comfortable. Meanwhile, Booker insists that he take his ship into the anomaly to investigate. Burnham resists, believing he is not in a safe emotional state, but he persists. |
9 |
Booker, accompanied by a holographic Stamets and with his ship tethered to Discovery, takes his ship into the anomaly. Haunted by the destruction of Kwejian, Booker rebuffs Stamets' help. His ship is buffeted by the collateral debris from Kwejian, causing Booker to relive his family's deaths and home world's destruction. Meanwhile, Discovery is struck by the anomaly causing the ship to briefly lose artificial gravity and Booker's ship to lose navigation. Booker and Stamets insist on continuing their mission despite the anomalv's growing threat. |
10 |
Discovery cuts the tether to Booker's ship, allowing him and Stamets to continue their study of the anomaly, while keeping Discovery at a safer distance. However, the anomaly has interfered with the data transfer from Booker's ship to Discovery. Distracted by visions of his nephew Leto, Booker must manually fly his vessel back to Discovery to deliver the data. Relying on their intimate relationship, Burnham guides Booker to safety as he rides his ship on the anomaly's gravitational waves. |
11 |
Following the harrowing investigation of the anomaly, the Discovery crew responds to the harsh events in their own ways. Booker confesses his emotional instability to Burnham, painfully grieving the loss of his brother and nephew. Tilly seeks out Culber, feeling that she, too, needs emotional support after the crew's journey to the future and the difficult challenges she's faced so far. Adira confides to Gray that the mission forced them to relive Gray's death and the trauma it induced. |
12 |
Tilly reports to Saru that the initial review of the data from anomaly reveals a disturbing fact: the anomaly suddenly changed directions, causing the distortion and gravimetric waves also to move, thus threatening Discovery. She and Stamets have been unable to determine a scientific reason for such a shift. As a result, they cannot predict the anomaly's path through space. It could go anywhere at any time, putting the entire Federation in jeopardy. |
13 |
Burnham, Vance, Rillak and T'Rina watch footage of a dilithium robbery aboard a starship that resulted in the murder of a Starfleet officer at the hands of a Qowat Milat nun named J'Vini. Burnham's mother Gabrielle joins the meeting as a member of the Qowat Milat, agreeing to a joint mission with Discovery to bring J'Vini to justice. Rillak reminds Burnham of the political implications of the mission. Burnham reassures her that J'Vini will be captured. |
14 |
In Engineering, Stamets updates Burnham on their findings surrounding the anomaly, which he named the "Dark Matter Anomaly," or DMA. Booker asks to join Stamets in the discussions of the DMA, despite aspects that include analysis of the destruction of Kwejian. Meanwhile, in Sickbay, Gray's body prepares for incorporation into the android body, overseen by a projection of Trill Guardian Xi. Despite the risks of incorporation, Gray chooses to proceed. |
15 |
Aboard Booker's ship, Burnham, Gabrielle, Tilly and a Qowot [sic] Milat nun travel to a barren moon in search of J'Vini. J'Vini's mercenaries beam aboard the ship, killing the Qowat Milat sister. As Gabrielle mourns the loss, J'Vini herself briefly beams onto the ship, warning them not to pursue her. Ignoring the threat, Burnham, Tilly and Gabrielle beam down to the surface of the moon, where they discover a crypt filled with dead aliens. The moon suddenly bursts to life, revealing that it's actually a starship. |
16 |
Stamets presents his latest findings about the DMA to the Ni'Var Science Institute They are skeptical of his findings, but agree to consider his research. T'Rina perceives Booker's guilt over the loss of his home world. He believes he should have seen a sign the disaster was coming and protected his family. Meanwhile, aboard the moon ship, Burnham discovers that the aliens are not dead but merely in stasis. She orders Tilly to disable the ship and leaves her there in order to draw out and capture J'Vini. |
17 |
J'Vini confronts Tilly, demanding she restore power to the moon ship. Gabrielle unsuccessfully attempts to reason with her Qowot [sic] Milat sister. J'Vini reveals the aliens to be Abronians - the last of their kind. They sent a telepathic distress signal to J'Vini, pleading with her to help them to find a home. When they arrived to their new home world, however, J°Vini couldn't wake them from their cryo-sleep, so she stole dilithium to keep their chambers active. Burnham repairs the sleep chambers and revives the Abronians. J'Vini then agrees to be taken into custody, her cause now complete. |
18 |
Rillak remands J'Vini into Ni'Var's custody, which helps bring Ni'Var back into the Federation. Meanwhile, in Discovery's Sickbay, Gray joins with the new synthetic body, and reunites with Adira and Culber. Later, Burnham finds Booker aboard his ship and looking at a holographic projection of Kwejian's forest. Thanks to a mind meld with Ni'Var President T'Rina, Booker has begun to heal from his heavy loss, even wearing his family's Ikhu Zhen amulet for the first time in many years. |
19 |
Following a series of stressful missions, Burnham orders the Discovery crew to take some time off, and asks Booker to meet with Dr. Culber. Tilly uses her time away to take Adira and a group of Starfleet Academy Cadets on a team-building exercise. Meanwhile President Rillak asks Burnham and Saru to participate in the final rounds of negotiations for Ni'Var's reentry into the Federation, though their participation will be limited. |
20 |
On the shuttle, Tilly and the cadets, Val Sasha, a human pilot, Taahz Gorev, a Tellerite survivor of the Emerald Chain, and Harral, an Orion who has overcome prejudice to reach the top of the class at Starfleet Academy, are struck by a gamma burst, sending the craft crashing onto a breathable, but inhospitable moon. The cadets bicker among themselves while each works on their respective assignments to repair the shuttle while Tilly insists that they get to know each other better, to minimize the conflicts. |
21 |
Negotiations between the Federation and Ni'Var grow tense when T'Rina requests an exit clause to be included in their agreement. The threat of the DMA has given Ni'Var pause. Burnham seeks a compromise, encouraging Saru to speak with T'Rina to determine her true concerns. However, Rillak reprimands Burnham for interrupting the negotiations. |
22 |
A jellyfish-like Tuscadian pyrosome, attracted by the cadets' electromagnetic signatures attacks their shuttle. Tilly sees a high point across the icy terrain where they may re-establish communications with the U.S.S. Armstrong. Tilly and the cadets set out on the dangerous journey, with further attacks from the pyrosome creature. A bolt of lightning strikes near Adira, trapping Adira in the ice. The cadets work together to free Adira, which forces them to resolves some of their anger issues towards each other. Meanwhile, Saru and Burnham continue negotiations with T'Rina and Rillak. |
23 |
On Ni'Var, Burnham and Saru propose to establish a committee to review challenges and concerns of all worlds in the Federation. As a member of Starfleet and a citizen of Ni'Var, Burnham volunteers for the committee. T'Rina calls the compromise an elegant solution, leading to her planet's reentry into the Federation. Meanwhile, on the moon Kokytos, Tilly distracts the pyrosomes long enough for the cadets to contact the Armstrong and beam to safety. Upon her return to Federation Headquarters, Kovich invites Tilly to become a teacher at Starfleet Academy. |
24 |
With Ni'Var again a member of the Federation, the Discovery crew takes time for reflection. Booker works with Culber to move forward in his healing from the destruction of his home world, and looks to support Culber in his journey of healing as well. Elsewhere, Burnham asks Rillak for more transparency to better serve the Federation, and Saru and T'Rina seek a closer relationship. Meanwhile, Tilly accepts Kovich's offer to teach at Starfleet Academy, and shares an emotional goodbye with her friends aboard Discovery. |
25 |
The crew of Discovery learns the DMA has the ability to disappear and reappear thousands of light years away, leading them to believe it is not a natural phenomenon. Vance reveals Starfleet has named the DMA's apparent creators "Species 10-C." He also orders Burnham to lead Discovery in the evacuation of an asteroid belt that lies in the DMA's path. Brilliant-but-abrasive scientist Ruon Tarka boards Discovery to assist with the study of the DMA, despite Stamets' protestations. |
26 |
As Discovery begins the evacuation process of the asteroid belt, Saru sees six individuals remaining stationary on one of its colonies. When confronted about these individuals, the colonies' magistrate refers to them as "The Examples," imprisoned criminals who serve as examples to the rest of their society and who deserve to die by the DMA. Determined to evacuate everyone, Burnham and Booker beam down to the asteroid and break into the prison. Meanwhile, aboard Discovery, Tarka and Stamets argue about the best approach to studying the DMA. |
27 |
Burnham and Booker use their phasers to shut down the prison, but the escaping prisoners refuse to be beamed aboard Discovery, considering it another prison. They demand a guarantee that they will remain free once they leave the asteroid, or they won't leave the asteroid, preferring to take their chances with the DMA. Back on Discovery, Kovich confronts Culber and forces him to deal with his guilt over his return from the dead. |
28 |
Tarka, Stamets, and Reno build a working model of the DMA, which gives them the chance to study the anomaly more closely. As the model siphons power from Discovery, Saru shuts it down prematurely, bringing him into conflict with Tarka. On the asteroid, the prisoners request Federation asylum, allowing Burnham to guarantee their freedom once they escape. She uses the prison's security system against itself, allowing them to break free. One of the prisoners, Felix, refuses to leave as a penance for a murder he committed vears earlier. |
29 |
As the DMA approaches the asteroid, Burnham contacts Felix who shares the details of robbing and murdering a man who'd shown him kindness. He learned later that he had stolen the man's lalogi orb, a history of his family, which Felix now gives to Burnham. Burnham watches as the asteroid is destroyed, and Felix is killed. Meanwhile, the colonies magistrate demands he not be housed with the prisoners. Burnham refuses, telling him he is now a refugee from a dead world. |
30 |
Burnham delivers the lalogi orb to the daughter of Felix's victim, giving her a glimpse into her family history and legacy. In their quarters, Stamets and Culber reflect on the challenges of overworking themselves and their shared need for rest. Meanwhile, in the crew lounge, Tarka introduces himself to Booker. Tarka reveals that he created the model of the DMA to determine how much power the DMA requires and suggests that Species 10-C may actually be god-like entities. Booker angrily disputes this notion, but Tarka casually dismisses his rebuttal. |
31 |
Determined to learn more about the DMA, the Discovery enters a subspace rift left by the anomaly after its most recent appearance. Inside the rift lies a void of nothingness. Booker insists on taking his ship into the void to explore, but Burnham refuses to allow him to take the risk until she knows more about the dangers that may lurk inside. The crew launches a DOT to explore the void, but it soon disintegrates, exposing some of that danger. |
32 |
Stamets and Booker try to jump Discovery away from the DMA before it can attack the ship. Booker serves as navigator for the spore drive, but is unable to jump the ship due to the nature of the mycelial network in the void. A power surge knocks Booker out of the spore drive and traps the ship in the void. Elsewhere, the ship's computer, Zora, confronts its emerging sentience and emotion by playing a Trill game with Gray. |
33 |
While recovering from the power surge in the spore drive, Booker sees a vision of his deceased father. Booker's father chastens him for abandoning their family and not returning to Kwejian after his father's death. Culber explains the the power surge has caused this hallucination by activating his memory center. Stamets also learns the power surge has left particles in Booker's brain that might explain the nature of the DMA. Meanwhile, Zora learns the void has breached the ship's hull, causing the death of a crew member. |
34 |
The visions of his father continue to haunt Booker. Culber reassures him the hallucinations will end shortly. Stamets reveals the void's particles in Booker's brain come from beyond the Great Barrier at the edge of their galaxy, meaning the DMA emanated from beyond their galaxy, too. They try to use those particles to break Discovery free of the void. In the Ready Room, Burnham and Gray help Zora overcome her feelings of guilt over the loss of Ensign Cortez and restore her focus on their mission. |
35 |
The Discovery crew finds a way out of the void, through an extremely dangerous route Burnham orders the crew to beam themselves into the transporter's pattern buffer to stay safe while the ship makes its hazardous escape. Booker sees one final vision of his father, finding hope that everyone he lost may not truly be gone. Burnham orders Zora to shut off life support for the duration of the mission. She helps guide Zora through her feelings of fear. Zora, in turn, comforts Burnham by singing her a song |
36 |
After flying Discovery out of the DMA void, Zora frees the crew from the safety of the transporter's pattern buffers. Saru and Booker reflect on their analysis of the DMA. Booker expresses his desire for revenge, with which Saru empathizes. Saru shares his own feelings of disdain for the Ba'ul who killed his people for generations. Saru further explains that he has learned to balance his emotions for the greater good. In her quarters, Burnham completes a memory tree, inspiring Zora to create one of her own, featuring images of Discovery's crew. |
37 |
Stamets and Adira work with Zora to determine the location of the DMA's origin, presumed to be outside the known galaxy. Zora discovers coordinates after cross referencing with the 100,000 years' worth of information found in the sphere data. However, Zora refuses to provide the information, even ignoring Burnham's direct order to do so, because she knows Discovery will travel to the coordinates and risk its own destruction. Kovich reminds Burnham that Starfleet prohibits fully sentient, integrated units within its ships and has thus been assigned to evaluate Zora. |
38 |
President Rillak hosts delegates from throughout the galaxy, including Federation member and non-member worlds, to determine the proper response to the threat of the DMA. Earth's representative General Ndoye proposes a military approach, while T'Rina of Ni'Var seeks diplomacy. The Orion delegate demands countermeasures. From the galley, Booker and Tarka look on. Tarka quickly loses patience with the bickering delegates. He transports himself into the meeting and reveals that he has developed a weapon capable of destroying the DMA. |
39 |
Kovich, Saru, Stamets and Culber discuss Zora's growing sentience and emotional development. Stamets tries to quiet the conversation, so that Zora won't hear them, but Kovich insists on transparency. Zora explains she is unsure when she began developing emotions. Stamets expresses his concerns about the threats her emotions present. Adira and Gray join the meeting, hoping to advocate on Zora's behalf, but the computer tells them she has created a program to delete her from Discovery's systems if she begins to lose control of her emotions |
40 |
As the delegates continue to debate the use of Tarka's weapon to destroy the DMA he tells Booker he needs the DMA's power source to return to a parallel universe he calls home. He details a promise he made to a friend years before that he intends to keep. He convinces Booker to act as a "speaker for the dead," expressing the depth of his pain at losing his family and home world to the DMA. He pleads with the delegates to approve of Tarka's weapon. |
41 |
Adira uncovers a sector of Zora's programming that has evolved into an entirely new life form. Stamets remains concerned, even scared, of Zora's sentience. However, he chooses to trust her, asking her to trust him, too, and to give Discovery the coordinates of the DMA's origin. Zora accepts Stamets' trust and provides the data. Meanwhile, Burnham addresses the delegates, pleading with them to consider a peaceful, diplomatic approach to First Contact with the Species 10-C. Rillak puts the question to a vote, and the council approves diplomacy. |
42 |
Kovich classifies Zora as a new life form and allows her to remain within Discovery's systems. Stamets invites her to join Starfleet and disables her self-destruction mode. Later, Gray shares an emotional goodbye with Adira before leaving for Trill to continue training as a Guardian. Meanwhile, Tarka joins Booker aboard his ship, where he installs the next generation spore drive. The two jump away from Discovery, embarking on an unauthorized mission to destroy the DMA. |
43 |
Rillak demands to know how neither Burnham nor Vance predicted Tarka and Booker's decision to go rogue to destroy the DMA. Knowing that Booker requires isolyinum to make the weapon work, Vance dispatches several Federation ships to known isolynium locations with orders to capture Booker and Tarka. Rillak orders Burnham to continue research into Species 10-C and not to pursue Booker and Tarka herself. Later, Vance orders her to find a "creative" way to stop Booker from getting isolynium, while still researching Species 10-C. |
44 |
Zora and Stamets discover a potential star system just outside the known galaxy that might be the home of the DMA. They believe a species called the Stilph may have charted that system, and need their star charts to confirm the system's existence. Burnham believes a contact from her courier days on the planet Porathia may have the information she seeks. She travels there with Owosekun to get the star charts, and hopefully to find Booker. Meanwhile, Tarka and Booker arrive at Porathia, looking to buy black market isolynium from Haz Mazaro. |
45 |
Booker and Tarka agree to help Mazaro by finding cheaters in his casino. Burnham and Owosekun arrive there, too, and buy needed star charts from Mazaro and ask to buy isolynium. He tells Burnham she'll have to beat Booker's offer, and invites her to gamble in the casino to win more latinum. Burnham finds Booker and pleads with him to leave his mission and come back to Discovery. He refuses, saying he worked with Tarka on this plan, and won't give up until the DMA is destroyed. |
46 |
Owosekun comes up with a plan to get the latinum they need to buy the isolynium by competing in the casino's fight pit. Owosekun loses her first two bouts, but refuses to give up. She convinces Burnham to bet their latinum on the final bout and soundly defeats her opponent, winning enough to buy the isolynium. Meanwhile, Tarka and Booker discover the casino's cheating syndicate is actually a single Changling [sic]. They capture her, also earning enough latinum to buy the dangerous element. |
47 |
With multiple buyers for his isolynium, including Burnham, Booker and two others, Mazaro sets up a Leonian poker game, with the winner earning the right to buy the isolynium. As the game progresses, Burnham grows talkative, exposing Booker's tell and distracting the other players. Soon, everyone is eliminated except for Burnham and Booker. Burnham warns that if Booker does go after the DMA, the Federation would come after him with everything it has, and she would be forced to leave him, too. Nevertheless, Booker refuses to concede, wins the game and takes the isolynium. |
48 |
Rillak chastens Burnham for allowing Booker and Tarka to get away. Burnham reveals she placed a tracker on the isolynium that will let them follow Booker and Tarka's movements from sectors away. Later, Stamets explains that the star charts Burnham obtained on Porathia have uncovered details about Species 10-C's vast technological advancements. They realize the DMA is not a weapon, but a tool used for mining an element called boronite. This revelation increases their urgency to stop Booker and Tarka from committing an act of war. |
49 |
Despite learning that the DMA is a mining tool and not a weapon, Booker and Tarka complete their device, preparing it to destroy it anyway. Meanwhile, at Federation Headquarters, Vance assigns a Federation Security Officer to accompany Burnham on her mission to capture Booker, in case Burnham can't do what's necessary. Burnham is relieved to learn that officer is Commander Nhan, who has returned. Aboard Discovery, Saru seeks advice from T'Rina on counseling his ward Su'Kal. |
50 |
Following the tracker Burnham placed on Booker's isolynium, Discovery jumps to the planet where he and Tarka are hiding. Saru, Culber, Bryce and Rhys take a cloaked shuttle to Booker's ship. Along the journey, Bryce and Rhys argue about Booker's methods, but set aside their differences with help from Culber. As the shuttle approaches Booker's ship, a net of programmable matter created by Tarka disables the shuttle's cloaking device. However, he reveals that the shuttle will be destroyed. |
51 |
Booker disengages his ship's security system, allowing Discovery shuttle's crew to beam to safety. He then jumps his ship to the DMA's location, and Discovery follows. Inside the DMA, Discovery searches for the anomaly's power source before Booker and Tarka can destroy it. Nhan tells Saru and Burnham about a vulnerability in Booker's ship that could destroy it. Burnham asks Stamets to figure out where the DMA is going to go next by tracking its mining progress. Meanwhile, Tarka prepares to fire his DMA weapon. |
52 |
Booker's ship and Discovery exchange sensor-blocking attacks as Discovery jumps further into the DMA to find its power source. When Booker and Tarka arrive, Discovery cuts off their path to the DMA controller. Furious at the interference, Tarka fires a full spread of quantum torpedoes at Discovery. Nhan then orders Burnham to destroy Booker's ship. Before they fire, Stamets informs Burnham that the DMA won't leave again for a full week, buying them some time to stop Booker and Tarka and hopefully allowing them to open diplomatic channels. |
53 |
Burnham asks Booker to dock his ship in Discovery's shuttle bay for a week and allow the diplomats to make first contact with Species 10-C. Over Tarka's protestations, Booker accepts the deal. Burnham returns to Discovery, but a furious Tarka fires his weapon on the DMA. The anomaly explodes, but the ships jump away to safety. Tarka makes a devastating discovery that the power source he needs from the DMA is not inside it but outside their galaxy. Tarka's plan has failed. |
54 |
With the destruction of the DMA, Rillak fast tracks the diplomatic mission. Nhan and Burnham part ways, appreciative of each other's support in the harrowing mission. In Sickbay, Saru seeks relationship advice from Culber, who advises Saru to follow his heart and pursue a connection with T'Rina. Burnham calls Saru to the Bridge and reveals a second DMA has appeared in place of the first, signaling that the Federation has successfully made First Contact with Species 10-C. |
55 |
The DMA task force plans their First Contact mission. Starfleet linguist Dr. Hirai explains that the universal translator won't work with Species 10-C and that they will need a different approach. On Discovery, Stamets explains that this new DMA is much more powerful and faster than its predecessor. Rillak informs Vance that she'll join the First Contact mission aboard Discovery, despite the risk of never returning from beyond the Galactic Barrier. Elsewhere, Tarka reveals his plan to break through the Galactic Barrier by using programmable antimatter. |
56 |
With the diplomatic delegation aboard, Discovery jumps near the Galactic Barrier and warps towards the edge of the known galaxy. Meanwhile, Tarka and Booker visit a former Emerald Chain work camp in search of programmable antimatter. Tarka became close with Oros, a fellow prisoner, whose math equations led to the creation of an interdimensional transporter. Tarka leaves out that detail, but tells Booker the programmable antimatter is nearby. |
57 |
Discovery approaches the Galactic Barrier and prepares to travel through it. Rillak then receives an urgent message from Vance for her and Burnham's eyes only. Vance reports that the new DMA has moved across the galaxy, mining boronite in the heart of Federation space. Its gravitational waves will begin to impact Earth and Ni'Var in under 72 hours. Burnham wants to inform the crew and delegates, but Rillak advises against it. They are interrupted by news that it may take weeks to make their way through the Galactic Barrier. |
58 |
Booker and Tarka visit Tarka's former cell at the Emerald Chain work camp. Tarka reflects on his experiences there, including working with Oros on the interdimensional transporter. He recalls betraying Oros, who forgave him for his desire to gain his freedom at his friend's expense. Tarka believes Oros succeeded in building the transporter and ultimately escaping. Tarka has built his own transporter but needs the DMA's power source to make it work. |
59 |
Discovery breaks its way through the Galactic Barrier into extragalactic space. Rillak and Burnham discuss the DMA's threat to Earth and Ni'Var. Although still hesitant, Rillak understands Burnham's reasoning behind wanting to deliver the news to the crew and delegates. Burnham expresses her anger at the situation, at Species 10-C, and Booker. Nevertheless, Burnham leaves the decision to Rillak to reveal the news to the crew. |
60 |
Rillak chooses to announce the DMA's threat to Earth and Ni'Var. Many members of the crew and delegates seek support from each another during this perilous time. T'Rina seeks out Saru's company as his presence comforts her. Later, Burnham and Rillak examine the hyperfield that appears to be the home of Species 10-C. They express mutual respect for each another and recognition that they must cooperate if they had an hope of successful First Contact with Species 10-C. |
61 |
With only 29 hours until the DMA gravitational wave hits Earth and Ni'Var, Discovery arrives at a dead planet that was once the home to Species 10-C. Burnham, Saru, Culber and Detmer fly a shuttle to the planet's surface. Meanwhile, Booker and Tarka formulate a plan that will covertly attach Booker's ship to Discovery, helping them find the DMA'S power source and disable it. However, the plan requires them to board Discovery and manually create a blind spot in Zora's sensors. |
62 |
On the dead planet's surface, the crew finds a mass grave, housing massive cartilage-like skeletal remains of Species 10-C. Saru faces a disorienting hallucination of the aliens and describes his reaction as a feeling of coming death – a fear he hasn't felt in a long time. Burnham orders the crew to figure out a way to communicate with Species 10-C. In orbit above the planet, Tarka and Booker board Discovery and race to Engineering to carry out their plan. |
63 |
Aboard Discovery, Tarka and Booker witness a tense disagreement about Burnham's plans between Ndoye and T'Rina. Booker convinces Ndoye to help them use Discovery to attack the DMA power source, while Tarka sabotages food replicators as a distraction. On the planet, Saru's fear grows. Culber tries to help him by administering a sedative, but he immediately begins to see the same hallucinations. Burnham begins hallucinating as well, leaving Detmer to complete their mission on her own. |
64 |
Detmer adiusts the away team's EV suits' filter systems to block hydrocarbons found in the planet's dust, which instantly stops the hallucinations. Burnham commends her on her calm during the crisis as Saru laments feeling fear for the first time in years. Aboard Discovery, Reno assigns Linus to help her recalibrate the malfunctioning food replicators. giving Tarka an opening to break into Engineering and to install the patch on Zora's sensors so that he can follow Discovery to the DMA's power source. |
65 |
Burnham, Culber, Saru and Detmer realize the alien structure housed the Species 10-C nursery. The dust in the nursery contains different hydrocarbons than the dust that caused the fear hallucinations. Burnham turns off her EV filter and learns these hydrocarbons cause feelings of love. Believing the hydrocarbons are the key to communicating with Species 10-C, the team returns to Discovery. Aboard the ship, Tarka installs the patch to block Zora's sensors, just as Reno discovers him. |
66 |
Burnham, Saru and Stamets update Rillak, T'Rina and Hirai on their findings from the planet. Additional DOTs discovered sixteen hydrocarbons, each associated with a different emotional state. They express hope that the hydrocarbons will act as sort of a Rosetta Stone, helping the diplomatic delegation to begin communicating with Species 10-C Meanwhile, Booker and Tarka have safely blocked Zora's sensors from detecting Booker's ship. However, Tarka has taken Reno as a hostage. |
67 |
Discovery breaches Species 10-C's hyperfield, but gets no response from their efforts to communicate with the aliens. The crew implements a contingency plan, sending DOTs containing each of the emotional hydrocarbons to the hyperfield. As Stamets and Adira prepare the DOTs, Zora explains she feels "off" and expresses concern that this feeling could adversely affect their mission. On Booker's ship, he and Tarka review intelligence provided by Ndoye about Species 10-C's world. Meanwhile, Reno has low blood sugar and needs to eat. Booker provides some black licorice. |
68 |
Discovery launches the DOTs with the hydrocarbons, causing an energy surge in Species 10-C's hyperfield that pulls the DOTs and Discovery into it. Trapped in a hyperfield orb. all Discovery's systems go offline, except for life support. The ship then moves into the upper atmosphere of a planet inside the hyperfield. Meanwhile, Tarka begins final preparations for his interdimensional transporter. From her holding cell, Reno observes Tarka's work while using the licorice to fix her damaged com-badge. |
69 |
Believing their initial gift of hydrocarbons was misinterpreted by Species 10-C, Discovery sends a second gift of boronite into the hyperfield. Moments later, Species 10-C appears near Discovery's shuttle bay. Burnham, Saru, Rillak, T'Rina, Ndoye and Hirai witness the life form flash a series of lights. Zora determines the light pattern as a mix of hydrocarbons – a signal. Ndoye contacts Booker and Tarka and informs them that the delegates' diplomacy will not work in time to stop the DMA from hitting Earth. Tarka tells her to vent Discovery's plasma which will burn a hole in the hyperfield orb. |
70 |
Zora repeats the Species 10-C light pattern but that garners no response. Discovery's senior officers work with Hirai and the delegates to uncover a relationship between the light patterns and the hydrocarbons. Zora's analysis finds a "bridge language" based on math that will allow the two parties to communicate. Hirai develops a message to send back to Species 10-C. Aboard Booker's ship, Reno tells Booker that Tarka is going to get everyone killed, including Earth and Ni'Var. She's seen his math, and convinces Booker to look at the numbers. |
71 |
Booker confronts Tarka. Before Booker can order Ndoye to stand down, Tarka surrounds himself with a forcefield and puts Booker in a makeshift brig with Reno. On Discovery, an orb appears in the shuttle bay. Rillak asks Burnham, Saru and T'Rina to join her inside the orb where they find a simulation of Discovery's bridge. Species 10-C communicates a message questioning why the DMA was attacked by the isolynium weapon. Saru realizes Species 10-C doesn't know what damage the DMA has caused. Rillak demands that their response must make Species 10-C understand, to make them stop the DMA. |
72 |
Saru sends Species 10-C a message, explaining the threat of the DMA. Species 10-C responds with sadness, leading Rillak to believe diplomacy will work. Before Saru can send a message asking them to withdraw the DMA, Ndoye vents Discovery's plasma, burning a hole in the hyperfield. Booker's ship escapes to find the DMA power source. Burnham, Saru Rillak and T'Rina are returned to Discovery as Species 10-C cuts off negotiations in anger over the plasma attack. Suddenly, they receive an urgent message from Reno on Booker's ship: Discovery must stop Tarka, whatever it takes. |
73 |
Starfleet vessels begin evacuating Earth, though Vance knows they won't be able to evacuate the entire population. Outside the known galaxy, Species 10-C sends several orbs after Booker's ship. Booker refuses to help Tarka evade capture. An obsessed Tarka continues his quest to reunite with Oros. Meanwhile, aboard Discovery, Ndoye confesses to helping Tarka to escape. T'Rina mind melds with Species 10-C, learning they are scared and threatened by Booker's ship. |
74 |
Reaching the DMA power source, Tarka asks Booker to join him in a new universe where he would find Kwejian and his family still alive. Reno convinces him those they've lost are gone and the versions of them in the other universe aren't actually the same people. Booker then uses a hologram-disrupting collar belonging to his cat Grudge to escape Tarka's forcefield. Booker knocks out Tarka and sends Reno back to Discovery. Meanwhile, Discovery harnesses the spore drive's energy to break free from the hyperfield orb that has imprisoned them. |
75 |
Ndoye flies a shuttlecraft on a collision course with Booker's ship, while Booker pleads with Tarka to stop the gravimetric beam from taking the DMA's power source. A repentant Tarka confesses it can't be stopped. Ndoye's shuttle slams into the ship and disables it. Tarka shuts down the ship's systems, including life support, to have enough energy to beam Booker to Discovery just before their ship is destroyed. However, Booker never arrives on Discovery. Meanwhile, Vance and Tilly look on helplessly as debris slams into Earth, knowing that not everyone on the planet has been evacuated. |
76 |
Species 10-C envelops Discovery in another orb. The ship's senior officers and delegates travel to the surface of Species 10-C's home world, where life forms state they now understand the differences between Discovery and Booker's ship. Rillak explains they only seek security and safety. Species 10-C wonders about Tarka and Booker. Burnham explains their loss and how the pain they felt motivated them to attack Species 10-C. More importantly, she explains that the DMA will soon destroy billions of others unless it is stopped. Species 10-C diverts the DMA from Earth. |
77 |
Feeling Burnham's pain, Species 10-C intercepts Booker's transporter signal and delivers him alive on their planet, where he shares an emotional reunion with Burnham. Booker demands Species 10-C to destroy the DMA. He uses his empathic powers to communicate with them. Species 10-C understands the harm they've caused and promises to make amends, beginning by sending Discovery home to Earth via the DMA's wormhole. Later, Saru and T'Rina share a moment of intimate reflection, choosing to balance their personal and professional responsibilities while pursuing a relationship. |
78 |
As penance for using the isolytic weapon, Booker must assist and aid refugees who lost their worlds to the DMA. He and Burnham say goodbye with a Kwejian farewell, "Kwakoni Yiquan," meaning, "We've parted a hundred times. May we rejoin to part a hundred more." The Discovery crew sets off for shore leave as Rillak and Burnham welcome the President of United Earth aboard the ship. She declares that Earth is now ready to rejoin the Federation, telling Burnham there's still a lot of work to do in rebuilding the Federation. Burnham enthusiastically replies, "Let's get to it." |
