Playmates Star Trek: The Next Generation 4½" Action Figures

Playmates Toys Logo

This fourth assortment saw the first redesign of the packaging with square backers being introduced to replace the former curved top backers and was released in two waves. The first wave in 1994 had seven different figures; 6960 LaForge, 6961 Dr. Crusher, 6962 Data, 6965 Yar, 6967 Lwaxana, 6968 Sarek and 6969 The Nausicaan. The second wave in 1995 had a further six figures; 6974 Picard from AGT, 6979 1940's Data, 6981 Ro Laren, 6962 Noonian Soong, 6985 Worf and 6986 Locutus. The first wave (excluding Dr. Crusher) was also released on Canadian bi-ligual cards in 1994.

Despite being shown on the second series backers, four figures (Picard as Galen, Vash, Beverly Crusher in 1940's Attire, and Dr. Pulaski) would not be released until the first and second waves of the later 6430 assortment.

USA 1994 Series - Asst. No. 6950 - With Collector Cards

This series of seven figures was released on 9-back J-Hook backers featuring nine figures, two of which (Ro Laren and Soong) were not released until the second wave.

These backers all have three variants with either "PRODUCT OF CHINA" or "PRODUCT OF MACAO" printed, or with a "PRODUCT OF CHINA" sticker applied to the back. All of the Australian releases have the "PRODUCT OF CHINA" stickers and ALL of the UK releases have the printed "PRODUCT OF MACAO" text.

All the figures came with and without the gold "7th Season" sticker which, if applied, would appear either to the left of the main "The Next Generation" text or to the right of the "TREK" text of the main logo. All the examples with the "7th Season" sticker on the right seem to have been issued in Australia.

Figures released in most territories came either with or without a factory "WARNING" sticker which was applied to the left of the J-Hook with the UK being the exception where none of them had this sticker.

The 6961 Dr. Crusher figures were released on two dstinct backers, one with a "Generations" style and one with a "TNG" style comlink base pictured to the the right of the accessories panel on the reverse of the backer. All of the Australian and UK releases have the Generations base pictured.

This figure usually comes with a TNG style base but there is one example that I am aware of that comes with a Generations style base in the package (possibly a packing error). This is an Australian release which, like all the Australian examples, also has the 7th Season Sticker on the right and a warning sticker.

On the backs of all of the 6961 Dr. Crusher cards an incorrect figure is shown wearing a Generations uniform and standing on a Generations base despite the packaged figure wearing a late TNG uniform.

Canadian 1994 Series - Asst. No. 696090 - With Trading Cards

Six of the seven first 1994 figures were released in Canada with just Dr. Crusher missing out. These six figures were released on leftover 1993 bi-lingual Canadian 31-back J-hook backers with no character specific information. They were all issued with the "7th Season" stickers applied to the right of the main STAR TREK logo and blue bi-lingual character name stickers on the bottom of the blisters.

USA 1995 Series - Asst. No. 6950 - With Trading Cards

This series of seven figures was released on 17-back J-Hook backers featuring all 13 figures from waves 1 and 2 plus four figures (Picard as Galen, Vash, 1940s Beverly Crusher, Dr. Pulaski) which were released later in the 6430 assortment.

These backers all have three variants with either "PRODUCT OF CHINA" (issued in US and UK) or "PRODUCT OF MACAO" printed (probably issued in the UK), or with a "PRODUCT OF CHINA" sticker applied to the back (probably issued in Australia).

With the "PRODUCT OF CHINA" UK issues both the collector card and the base that comes packed under the bubble come packed inside clear plastic bags that have pre-printed triangular recycle symbols on them. They are either both large or both small recycle symbols. The backers also have the CE-Bandai stickers on the back. The "PRODUCT OF MACAO" UK issues as well as the US and Auatralian issues have plastic bags without recycle symbols and no CE-Bandai stickers on the back.

Quite why the Locutus figure is packed in "Holodeck Series" packaging is a mystery
