Star Trek Voyager: Profiles

Star Trek Voyager Profiles

The Voyager Profiles set is based around the 10 most important series characters. Each subset consists of three Personal Log cards, three Reflections, one Captain's card, one Crew Manifest, and one Alien Encounter. Chase sets include; Westmore Make-Up (1:4), Alien Technology (1:6), 7 of 9 (1:8 with the 7th card being inserted 1:144). The fourth in a series of four Captain’s Cards was included in this set and was limited and numbered to 1200. 20 different Autograph Cards (1:36) were inserted. The fewest number signed by any artist is about 800 cards, with an average of around 1,000. Kate Mulgrew is reported to have signed over 1,000 along with Michael McKean (The Clown). Like the Original Series sets, there was a series of Autograph Challenge letter cards inserted into the packs. If anyone was lucky enough to spell the phrase “Star Trek Voyager”, these could be redeemed for a complete set of autograph cards.

Kathryn Janeway

01

KJ1.1
CM1
1 Crew Manifest

Kathryn Janeway is captain of the U.S.S. Voyager, a Federation starship flung 70,000 light years from home by the life form known as the Caretaker. Deeply principled and devoted to the safety of her crew, Janeway finds herself tested time and again by the challenges of unexplored space. Against all odds, Janeway unites her Starfleet, Maquis and Delta Quadrant crew members, exploring strange new worlds while leading her ship relentlessly toward home.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Originally named Nicole Janeway, the captain was named after American feminist writer Elizabeth Janeway.

2 Admiral's Log

As my science officer aboard the U.S.S. Al-Batani, Kathryn Janeway was an exemplary officer. When she was promoted to captain, I knew Voyager was in good hands. The loss of Janeway and her ship was a terrible one for Starfleet. But recently, we recieved word of Voyager's existence in the Della Quadrant. If anyone can bring Voyager's crew, including my son Tom, back home again, it's Janeway.

I've always believed myself a woman of science. When Kes was nearly killed by a biogenic field in a Nechani holy shrine, I went through a ritual to save her. But my reliance on science only hindered me. The tests I endured were self-imposed and meaningless. Only when I returned to the shrine and made a leap of faith was I successful in saving Kes. Science cannot always provide an explanation.

STAR TREK TRIVIA

The shrine in which Kes is injured is where the Nechisti monks receive the gift of purification, or "cleansing of the soul."

KJ1.4
4 Personal Log

Witnessing my own death on an away mission filled me with despair. When the image of my long-deceased father came to take me away, I resisted. I could not abandon my ship and crew, not even in spirit. But my "father" persisted. That's when I realized my death wasn't real, and that he was a malevolent alien entity. My father would never try to shield me from death. When he saw I would not go with him, the entity returned to his matrix.

STAR TREK TRIVIA

Janeway's father drowned under the polar ice cap on
Tau Ceti Prime.

Tracing Voyager's stolen computer processor to an alien planet, Tuvok and I beamed down to find my childhood hero, Leonardo da Vinci. Apparently, his holodeck program was active in the computer memory when the processor was stolen. I had to convince the maestro to leave this place of "mechanical marvels." It was his flying machine that allowed us to escape our pursuers. Helping him achieve his lifelong dream of flight was a moment I'll always cherish.

STAR TREK TRIVIA

After his adventure with Janeway, Leonardo headed for France, because "Florentines do not deserve my genius."

SEVEN OF NINE

Reflecyions on Janeway
I was outraged to find that the human in charge of Voyager, Captain Janeway, had severed my link to the Borg Collective. Her assertion that I must rediscover my humanity was arrogant and presumptuous. Janeway is an individual. She is small. Yet even after I disabled her crewman and attempted to contact the Borg, Janeway promised to help me through my transition.

"You can alter our physiology, but you cannot change our nature. We will betray you. We are Borg."
— Seven of Nine to Janeway, "The Gift"

TUVOK

When aliens infiltrated the ship to conduct secret medical experiments on the crew, Captain Janeway became increasingly agitated. I have always placed the greatest confidence in her judgment, but I was unnerved when her game of "poker" with the aliens nearly destroyed Voyager. Fortunately, the captain's plan worked; the aliens withdrew in order to save themselves. Once again, the captain's intuition proved a successful counterpoint to pure logic.

Janeway: "I never realized you thought of me as reckless, Tuvok."
Tuvok: "A poor choice of words. It was clearly an understatement" — "Scientific Method"

CHAKOTAY

Kathryn got some bad news from home when we finally managed to contact Starfleet. Though it was painful for her, she told me that her fiancé, Mark, had gotten married in her absence. I felt Kathryn's pain at the news and did my best to console her. But the news stirred something deep inside me. As Kathryn said, Mark was her safety net to avoid forming new relationships. Now, perhaps she'll open herself to other possibilities.

"What I have on Voyager is so much better than anything I ever had back home."
— Paris, "Hunters"

9 Alien Encounters - Q

Like most Starfleet captains, Janeway has little patience with Q. Her patience all but evaporated when Q asked her to have his baby. His union with Janeway, he reasoned, would produce a new breed of Q — one that could end the Continuum's civil war. Janeway sought other solutions to the crisis, but it was Q's estranged female companion who ultimately saved the day. The two Q were reconciled, and Janeway was named the godmother of their child.

Life-Form Files

One of the first things Q taught his infant son was how to knock small planets out of orbit.

Chakotay

10

C2.1
CM2
10 Crew Manifest

Commander Chakotay was a Maquis freedom fighter before his ship was catapulted to the Delta Quadrant. His crew joined forces with Captain Janeway, and Chakotay became Voyager's first officer. Proud of his Native American heritage, Chakotay is a spiritual man with a strong sense of what he believes is right and wrong. He doesn't always agree with Captain Janeway and is not afraid to offer a different, "non-Starfleet" point of view.

Chakotay was critical in helping our mix of Maquis and Starfleet officers gel together as a crew. Since then, he's proven himself an excellent first officer, and he's become my dearest friend despite our frequent disagreements. I had to put him on report when he went after Seska on his own, and later, he violated my order to keep our Borg alliance intact against Species 8472. We both learned that only by working together can we get this ship and crew home.

My experience with Professor Gegen was troubling. A member of an advanced reptilian race, Gegen discovered evidence that his people originated on Earth, proving the "distant origin theory." Working independently, Janeway and the Doctor came to the same conclusion. Gegen's ancestors were Earth's dinosaurs! But the proud Voth magistrate could not disregard 20 million years of doctrine. I argued on Gegen's behalf, to no avail. When the magistrate threatened to destroy Voyager, Gegen made the ultimate sacrifice to save us. He recanted.

I don't believe in fighting other people's wars. But I found myself fighting side by side with the Vori against the [Kradin]. I learned later that the Vori conscript and train their own people, and aliens passing by their planet, to fight their war with the [Kradin]. I was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Even when I knew the truth, the effects of the Vori mind control lingered. It took time before I could stop hating the [Kradin].

Who can explain love? Kellin fled her people to be with me on Voyager. I didn't remember her — the memories of Ramorans can't be held in the minds of other races. But I fell in love with Kellin again. When the Ramoran Tracer appeared and wiped her memory, I told her about us, but she would not stay. I fell in love with Kellin twice, but she couldn't. Why didn't it happen again? Neelix is right: Love is the greatest mystery.

RILEY FRAZIER

At first, we were afraid to reveal our Borg history to Chakotay. But he learned the truth, and he allowed me and the other members of the cooperative to heal his brain injury through a mental link. During the link. I felt Chakotay's kindness and strength. I also felt his loyalty to Janeway. I regretted forcing him to assist us in establishing a planet-wide neural link, but we achieved our goal — unity.
I hope Chakotay will come to understand.

ANNORAX

Unlike his intransigent crewmate, Tom Paris, Chakotay understands the subtleties of time. Not everyone has the ability to truly perceive time, its colors, its moods — but I think Chakotay does. Instead of working against me, Chakotay worked on calculations to help me restore the Krenim empire — and Voyager — without destroying more life. Chakotay's calculations were promising, but when Time offers me an opportunity, I don't ignore it… no matter how many civilizations I erase in the process.

"You're an anomalous component. Alone, disconnected, impossible to predict."

NEELIX

Commander Chakotay saw how troubled I was after I recovered from death itself. He offered to help me make sense of my feelings with the vision quest, a very personal experience he seldom shares with others. Later, when the hopelessness of my situation nearly overwhelmed me, Chakotay talked me through the crisis. He pointed out that my experience with death could lead to a stronger faith. Lucky for me, I realized Chakotay was right.

"You're being called back to your life again, Neelix. Don't turn your back on it. We're your family now."

18 Alien Encounters - Sleeping Aliens

Chakotay put himself in a lucid dream state to communicate with a mysterious race of sleeping aliens. Earth's moon was his visual cue to wake himself up. But the aliens lied to Chakotay and took over the ship. Frequently tricked into thinking he was awake, Chakotay finally found the aliens in the waking world. Working with the Doctor, he threatened to destroy the alien cavern — and himself — if Voyager was not released and her crew allowed to wake. Chakotay's power play worked.

Life-Form Files

The sleeping aliens transmitted a neurogenic field to overcome the Voyager crew.

Thomas Eugene Paris was doing time at a Federation penal settlement when Captain Janeway recruited him to help locate fellow Maquis members. Paris distinguished himself in Voyager's encounter with the Caretaker, and Janeway granted him a field commission of lieutenant. An excellent pilot, Paris frequently draws away-mission assignments involving Voyager's shutles. Paris may be the only one among the crew who doesn't mind being far away from home. He befriended Harry Kim at the outset of our journey, and his charm has made him popular among the crew. If Owen could see his son now, he'd be very proud of Tom.

My father used to tell me I'd do something significant some day. And I did — I broke the warp threshold. But doing so sped up my human evolutionary process by millions of years. Afterward, I felt overwhelmed by what happened: flying at warp 10, evolving into a new life form, mating with Captain Janeway, having alien offspring. I thought making history would change things — not just my service record, but my reputation. But it's not other people's opinions I should be worried about, It's mine.

Watching B'Elanna go through her version of the Pon farr, instigated by Vorik, was hard for me. She was the one fighting a hormonal imbalance; all I had to do was resist my own desire for her. B'Elanna and I didn't need the Pon farr to get together.

Once I got back into my own body, the first thing I did was take B'Elanna to my '69 Camaro on the holodeck.

RAIN ROBINSON

Tom Paris and his friends were just a little bit off. Tuvok — what a freakasaurus! Tom was pretty goofy, but extremely smart. His mission, whatever that was, seemed more important to him than his own life. The UFO in orbit, the laser pistols, the chase through the desert in my VW bus… strange and exciting though it was, I'Il remember Tom Paris best of all. I never met anyone like him before, and I don't think I ever will again.

Lt. Paris asked to finish my holodeck tactical training scenario, and the captain agreed. I offered Mr. Paris my original probability studies, but he insisted on making up the story as he went along. The lieutenant's idea to have the captain execute the mutineers after retaking the ship was highly implausible. Mr. Paris showed no regard for logic, an integral part of narrative structure. Finally he made the rational decision to work with me, but then the holo-Seska rendered the matter moot.

Paris reluctantly agreed to help take care of the hatchling, naming Neelix its "godmother" and himself its "uncle." Later, Paris surmised the creature fed off the planet's trigemic vapors, a conclusion that helped them save the aliens life.

The half-Klingon, half-human, ex-Maquis B'Eanna Torres is chief engineer aboard Voyager: Torres' internal conflict between her Klingon and human sides made her integration with the Starfleet crew especially difficult. The Clown used that horrifying memory against me. Fortunately, he was no match for Captain Janeway.

While Seven's human physiology has largely reasserted itself, the woman who was born Annika Hansen continues to struggle with the complexities of her new life on Voyager.

Makeup with Michael Westmore (1:4 packs)

MW1 MW1 Man of Many Faces

Makeup Supervisor and Designer Michael Westmore has been a presence in the Star Trek universe for more than a decade, creating the faces of Kazons and Klingons, Talaxians and Trills. He has contributed his makeup design skills to such films as Clan of the Cave Bear, 2010, and MASK - for which he won an Academy Award - and he is the recipient of nine Emmy Awards, five of which are for work done on Star Trek productions.
MW2 MW2 Spare Parts

Michael Westmore keeps a supply of alien appliances in his lab, which come in handy for crowd scenes. And it's not all latex. Plaster molds for Borg, Ferengi, and Romulan body parts rest on floor-to-ceiling shelves, awaiting future use. Some pieces are more perishable than others. Neelix's nose, or Seven of Nine's hand and eyebrow pleces, can only be applied a few times, then must be re-made.
MW3 MW3 A Little Piece of Seven

Michael Westmore works his wonders in plaster and latex. From a cast of actress Jeri Ryan's hand, a bit of Borg technology is formed. Seven of Nine's distinctive eyebrow and cheek píeces are made in a similar way. Westmore has his hands in every step of the design and creation of all the aliens in the Delta Quadrant, with more to come. Almost every episode calls for something new.
MW4 MW4 Beastly Boys

Michael Westmore and his crew of makeup artists stretch the limits of their imaginations every time they sculpt an alien. Ideas take form in clay first, seldom on paper. Inspiration comes from nature - bugs, reptiles, birds - and from the type of character to be portrayed. Toothy "alligator" spikes say for certain that the Jem'Hadar are nasty.
MW5 MW5 Pin-Ups

Star Trek species come in all sorts of dimensions and colors. Each week a new script calls for a different creature, which does not give Michael Westmore and his staff of artists much lead time. Makeup appliances must be custom-fitted, and design work often begins before the actor has even been cast. But for standards like Worf, beards and brow ridges are stored on Styrofoam mannequin heads in Westmore's lab. Don't go there at night.
MW6 MW6 Head Games

Michael Westmore's favorite alien is Neelix, and admits the Talaxian's features were inspired by the meercat and boar in The Lion King. He wanted "lovable and playful", which is achieved by furry hair and warm colors. Sometimes a script calls for something even more challenging, such as a character based on a dinosaur or a tree trunk. Westmore loves a challenge.
MW7 MW7 The Making of a Talaxian - I

"Neelix is my all-time favorite on Voyager," says Michael Westmore, who designed him. Actor Ethan Phillips and makeup artist Scott Wheeler begin the transformation with the sculpted headpiece, which is fitted and glued in place. The seams at the neck, forehead, and temples are later blended with paint - a customized tint called "Neellx #98". The process often begins at 6:30 AM, and can take several hours to complete.
MW8 MW8 The Making of a Talaxian - II

On Voyager, makeup artist Scott Wheeler's specialty Is Neelix. Although any one of Michael Westmore's staff can put the latex appliances on any of the actors, each character has his or her own specialist who is familiar with the specific colors and makeup detalls. These are painstakingly painted, shaded, and airbrushed so that consistent results are achieved under any lighting conditions. Sessions can be three hours long.
MW9 MW9 The Making of a Talaxian - III

The final touches are applied to actor Ethan Phillips by makeup artist Scott Wheeler after almost three hours of work. Michael Westmore's design for Neelix calls for a pattern of soft spots, which are applied in three layers of colors with an airbrush. At last, the mutton chops and eyebrows go on, the orange contact lenses go in, and Neelix is ready for action.

Alien Technology (1:6 packs)

AT-1 AT-1 Swarm Ships

THE SWARM
Little is known about the dangerous Delta Quadrant aliens who fly their small ships in a giant swarm. Their language is so unusual that Voyager's universal translator cannot interpret it. One thing is certain: They don't want anyone violating their vast territory of space.

Individual ships scan intruding vessels and change their shield polarity. The ships attack enemy vessels in a swarm, attaching to the hull and extracting energy from all systems. Each swarm ship is connected to the others with an interferometric pulse, which modulates in opposition to the enemy ship's shield trequencies, completely cancelling them out.
AT-2 AT-2 Voth Ship

THE VOTH
The saurian race from the planet Voth believes it was the fist intelligent race to evolve in its sector of space. Although the circles of Archeology, Science and Philosophy have begun to question this belief, the Ministry of Elders is adamantly opposed to the notion.

A massive spacial displacement precedes the arrival of the gigantic Voth "city ship." This ship employs a powerful probe, an energy beam that cuts through a vessel's shields. Using advanced transporter technology, the Voth beamed the U.S.S. Voyager directly inside their city ship and shut down all of Voyager's systems.
AT-3 AT-3 Borg Ships

BORG
Of all the territories encountered by Voyager in the Delta Quadrant, Borg space is perhaps the most vast. It comprises thousands of solar systems, a serious threat to any ship that might venture into the region. The Borg attempt to assimilate any and all races they encounter, adding the aliens' knowledge and technology to their own.

The huge, cube-shaped Borg ships feature a decentralized design with no specific bridge, engineering or living areas. Their energy weapons cause considerable damage to Startleet ships, Borg ships are capable of repairing major damage almost immediately.
AT-4 AT-4 Hirogen Ship

The Hirogen are a nomadic, hunting species who base their culture on the pursuit of prey. Diplomacy isn't part ot their lifestyle. They value strong prey for a more challenging hunt. Captured aliens are "relics," and unusual ones are particularly prized.

Hirogen ships travel alone or in small groups. Occasionally, several ships join forces in a multi-pronged attack, Hirogen ships are heavily armed and scattered in all directions of the Delta Quadrant. The walls of the ships are adorned with body parts from relics hunted by the crew.
AT-5 AT-5 Species 8472 Ship

SPECIES 8472
Species 8472 lives in another dimension, a realm of organic fluid — not space, but matter. Species 8472 is devious and highly intelligent, and more powerful than the Borg, who cannot assimilate them. These aliens use quantum singularities to travel to and from the Delta Quadrant.

The bio ships used by Species 8472 are made of the same organic material as the aliens themselves. These organic ships throb with biologically engineered technology superior to any other ever encountered by the Borg. The bio ships fire tendrils of energy that rip apart enemy vessels.
AT-6 AT-6 Annorax Ship

THE KRENIM
The Krenim Imperium, comprised of over 200 star systems and 900 planets, was a powertal race that dominated an area of the Delta Quadrant. Their deadly weapons based on temporal science kept the Krenim in power. But the space-lime experiments of one man, Annorax, changed all that.

Annorax' time ship existed in a state of temporal flux, outside of space-time, Its kronoton weapon created "temporal incursions": spacial distortions consisting of a massive buildup of temporal energy. The resulting space-time shock wave erased entire worlds from history.
AT-7 AT-7 Bomar Ships

THE BOMAR
The Bomar sovereignty granted Voyager passage through Bomar space, but only with extremely confining guidelines. The Bomar chancellor required Voyager not to exceed Warp 3, and the course he plotted for the Federation ship was a long and torturous route avoiding all centers of population.

Bomar ships work in conjunction with the sovereignty's spacial perimeter grid. Every vessel, every object, every particle of dust that crosses the bordens of Bomar space is immediately identified and traced by the grid, Bomar vessels then target and engage intruding ships.
AT-8 AT-8 Ramorans Ship

RAMORANS
Ramora is a closed society that doesn't allow anyone to leave. Moreover, the memories of Ramorans can't he held in the minds of other races. They exude a pheremone that blocks the long-term memories of others. After a few hours, the memories begin to fade away. Ramorans are also impervious to transporter devices.

Favoring a covert existence, Ramorans developed technology to enhance their privacy. This secretive attitude is reflected in the cloaking devices their ships carry. Ramoran Tracers fly small, moderately armed, cloaked ships to pursue and retrieve runaways.
AT-9 AT-9 Arturis Ship

ARTURIS
Arturis and his people are skilled linguists. They eluded the Borg for centurles. But Captain Janeway's earlier truce with the Borg to defeat Species 8472 spelled doom for Arturis' race. He alone escaped to tell of their assimilation. Ultimately he, too, was assimilated.

The U.S.S. Dauntless, NX01A, appeared to be a Starfleet vessel but was actually Arturis' alien craft. The ship used an unconventional method of propulsion called a Quantum Slipstream Drive, routing energy through the main deflector: At slipstream velocity, the ship could have reached the Alpha Quadrant in a mere thee months.

Seven of Nine (1:8 packs, 7 of 9 1:144 packs)

1 of 9 1 of 9 Physical I

Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero One, was assimilated by the Borg when she was 6 years old. Like all children assimilated by the Borg, Seven was placed in a maturation chamber for 17 cycles. The assimilation process left her part human and part machine — a Borg drone. Her cranial armor plating was connected to her skull with over three million microconnectors. Sophisticated cybernetic implants gave Seven great technological and combat capabilities.

SEVEN FACTS:
Seven donated 70 nanoprobes from her bloodstream to bring Neelix back to life after his fatal shuttle accident.
2 of 9 2 of 9 Physical II

Once her mental link to the Collective was cut, Seven's human physiology began to reassert itself, battling the Borg implants. The Doctor, assisted by Kes, began removing key Borg systems from Seven's body in order to save her life. When Seven went into neural shock, Kes mentally located the source of the problem within Seven's body and eradicated it subatomically. But the Doctor's work had only just begun.

SEVEN FACTS:
As a Borg, Seven could go as long as 200 hours without regenerating.
3 of 9 3 of 9 Physical III

After Voyager's safe deliverance from Borg space, the Doctor finished removing most of Seven's Borg hardware. He added dermal grafts and gave Seven a nearly human appearance. He even stimulated her hair follicles. Seven's remaining implants must be monitored in weekly checkups. She also has to spend at least three hours each day in her Borg alcove in the cargo bay until her human metabolism can function on its own.

SEVEN FACTS:
Seven's first uniform was a high-necked Sliver jumpsuit, which she eventually replaced with a more relaxed, metallic-brown version.
4 of 9 4 of 9 Emotional I

Regaining consciousness in Sickbay, Seven found the sudden silence in her mind unacceptable. The security, the harmony of purpose, the unified will — all vanished when Captain Janeway severed her connection to the Borg. Seven felt small, alone. She tried to contact the Collective but was thwarted by Kes's newly expanded mental powers. Seven's designation is no longer relevant, but it will be a while before she is ready to go by her human name, Annika Hansen.

SEVEN SPEAKS:
"The Collective still possesses my recollections, my experiences. In a sense, I will always exist." — "Mortal Coil"
5 of 9 5 of 9 Emotional II

Suddenly compelled to rejoin the Collective, Seven stole a shuttlecraft and headed for a Borg homing beacon. She considered assimilating Lt. Tuvok, then changed her mind and asked him to thank Janeway for her kindness. On the moon's surface, Seven found the wreck of the Raven, her family's vessel from 20 years ago. The memories of her parents and of herself as a girl shook Seven deeply, and she returned to Voyager to continue her human exploration.

SEVEN SPEAKS:
"I tried to hide — maybe they wouldn't find me because I was little. But they did." — "The Raven"
6 of 9 6 of 9 Emotional III

Seven experienced panic and apprehension when
Voyager passed through the Mutara Nebula. Everyone but herself and the Doctor was in suspended animation. The nebula's radiation, and her isolation, began to affect her mind. Then the Doctor's emitter failed, and Seven alone bore responsibility for the crew's safety. As ship's systems began to fail, Seven made the ultimate sacrifice, cutting off her life support to save the crew. Later revived, Seven went to the crowded mess hall in search of human companionship.

SEVEN SPEAKS:
"I am Seven of Nine … I am alone, but I will adapt." —
"One"
7 of 9 7 of 9 Duty Assignment I

In her first assignment after leaving Borg space, Seven asked for and was given a job in Engineering. She found it difficult to spend time alone, so even the antagonistic B'Elanna Torres was welcome company. Seven's task was to work with Torres on Borg transwarp technology. Seven tried to form a subspace field and open a transwarp conduit, but rising tachyon levels forced an early termination to the project.

ANNIKA HANSEN HISTORY:
Seven of Nine was born Annika Hansen on Stardate 25479 at the Tendara Colony.
8 of 9 8 of 9 Duty Assignment II

Following her stint in Engineering, Seven was assigned to the Astrometrics lab. There, she provided navigational data she had acquired during her time with the Borg. But Seven refused Captain Janeway's request to open a singularity for the creature known as Species 8472, instead condemning the creature to death by beaming it to a Hirogen ship. Outraged, Janeway revoked Seven's access to all primary systems on Voyager.

ANNIKA HANSEN HISTORY:
When she was a child, Seven's favorite color was red.
9 of 9 9 of 9 Duty Assignment III

After a period of restricted duties in Astrometrics, Seven asked for more responsibilities. She was assigned to help the trader Kovin adapt his alien weapons system to Voyager. Later, she spent a great deal of time working on [decrypting] the encoded message from Starfleet Command. Seven remains a valuable resource in Astrometrics, where she is
committed to designing another method of traveling
at slipstream velocities without damaging Voyager.

ANNIKA HANSEN HISTORY:
Annika and har parents may have been the first humans the Borg ever assimilated.
