Captain Kirk
Captain James T. Kirk took over the U.S.S. Enterprise from Captain Pike, and led the ship's historic five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. |
92 |
|
Spock
After picking up a recorder-marker from the S.S. Valiant, Spock interpolated a message indicating that the missing ship had encountered a magnetic storm and that its crew was then studying ESP, two seemingly unrelated facts - or were they? |
93 |
|
Gary Mitchell
A friend of Captain Kirk from Starfleet Academy, Gary Mitchell mutated into a godlike being after traveling through a mysterious energy barrier at the edge of the galaxy. The powerful mutation ultimately forced Kirk to kill Mitchell, who was credited as having given his life in the line of duty. |
94 |
|
Elizabeth Dehner
Dubbed a "walking freezer unit" by Gary Mitchell, Dr. Dehner was assigned to the Enterprise to study the crew's reactions to crisis situations. Like Mitchell, she mutated into a godlike being and later died on Planet Delta Vega. She, too, was credited as having given her life in the line of duty. |
95 |
|
Lt. Lee Kelso
A helm officer aboard the Enterprise, Lt. Lee Kelso was part of the landing party dispatched to Planet Delta Vega to quarantine Gary Mitchell. Kelso was killed by Gary Mitchell, who strangled his former colleague with a cable simply by using powers of telekinesis. |
96 |
|
Scotty
Chief Engineer aboard the Enterprise under Captain Kirk, Scotty provided much need[ed] technical leadership. When Gary Mitchell began taking control of the ship, Scotty was the first to report the strange findings. He manned transporter controls when beaming the landing party to Planet Delta Vega. |
97 |
|
U.S.S. Enterprise
The U.S.S. Enterprise was led by Captain Pike, and then by Captain Kirk, during its 5-year mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations…to boldly go where no man has gone before! |
98 |
|
S.S. Valiant Ship Recorder
After picking up a recorded distress signal from a ship, the S.S. Valiant, which had been missing for more than two centuries, the Enterprise beamed aboard an old-style recorder marker that was likely sent into space as a result of an emergency. The marker offered vague clues to the destruction of its ship. |
99 |
|
Transporter Control
The transporter was a key piece of equipment aboard the Enterprise. It enabled its crew and objects to travel nearly instantaneously through space, from one location to another, and across great distances, by scattering molecules in one place and reassembling them in another. |
100 |
|
Vulcan Chess Master
Spock engaged Captain Kirk in a game of three-dimensional chess. When Kirk commented that Spock played an "irritating" game of chess, Spock replied, "Ah, yes, one of your Earth emotions." Nonetheless Kirk outmaneuvered his Vulcan science officer and won the game. |
101 |
|
Approaching Energy Barrier
At the edge of the galaxy, the Enterprise encountered a mysterious energy barrier. Upon entering the barrier, chaos erupted aboard the ship, as many of the controls shorted out and caught fire. Gary Mitchell and Dr. Dehner both suffered severe shocks, and Mitchell's eyes took on a strange silvery glow. |
102 |
|
Attack on the Crew!
Upon entering the mysterious energy barrier at the edge of the galaxy, Gary Mitchell suffered a severe shock that knocked him to the bridge floor. Mitchell's eyes soon took on a strange silvery appearance, in what was the first part of a dangerous transformation. |
103 |
|
Powerful Eyes
With his eyes still displaying a strange silvery glow, Mitchell rested in sickbay. Mitchell soon exhibited ever increasing mental capabilities that enabled him to absorb large quantities of reading material in mere moments, and he soon developed the ability to move objects. |
104 |
|
Planet Delta Vega
After suffering damage from the energy barrier at the edge of the galaxy, the Enterprise entered orbit around Delta Vega, so that repairs could be made. Captain Kirk also intended to strand the increasingly powerful and dangerous crewman Gary Mitchell on the planet's surface. |
105 |
|
God-Like Beings
After escaping from the brig of the lithium cracking station on Delta Vega, Gary Mitchell ventured into the wilderness of the planet, along with Dr. Dehner, who had become similarly affected by the energy barrier. Together, the two mutated humans planned to live as god-like beings. |
106 |
|
Friends But Enemies
Armed with a phaser rifle, Captain Kirk pursued his friend and crewman, Gary Mitchell, whose transformation into a supreme being made him terrifyingly dangerous. Even a blast from the phaser rifle had no effect on Mitchell. |
107 |
|
Battle to the Death
After failing to kill Gary Mitchell with a phaser rifle Captain Kirk had to resort to hand-to-hand combat - not the best option when battling a god-like being, Using his powers of telekinesis, Mitchell creating [sic] a grave marked James R. Kirk, C. 1277.1 to 1313.7. Little did Mitchell know that the grave would be his own. |
108 |
|
Fatal Ending
After Dr. Dehner weakened Gary Mitchell by using her own powers, Captain Kirk created a rock slide with his phaser rifle that came down on Mitchell. Dehner was also fatally wounded. Kirk noted for the record that both officers gave their lives in the line of duty. |

"CHARLIE X"
Stardate 1533.6:
The cargo ship Antares docks with the Enterprise to deliver young Charlie Evans, who had grown up alone on the planet Thasus after a spaceship crash 14 years ago. Antares Captain Ramart and crewman Tom Nellis seem unusually eager to leave. After they depart, the cargo ship explodes as Ramart attempts to warn them—of what?
"You know how you feel, and that's all. Don't press. If the girl feels anything for you, you'll know." — Capt. Kirk to Charlie Evans |

"CHARLIE X"
Stardate 1533.7:
Aboard the Enterprise, Charlie begins to work "miracles." At first these pranks are relatively harmless, but when Yeoman Rand spurns Charlie's advances she is erased from existence by the youngster. Various other crewmen are victimized in nightmarish ways. Then, impatient to reach Colony Alpha Five, Charlie seizes control of the ship's most vital systems.
"If I had the whole universe, l'd give it to you. When see you, I feel like I'm hungry all over. Do you know how that feels?" — Charlie Evans to Yeoman Rand |

"CHARLIE X"
Stardate 1535.8:
In an attempt to weaken young Charlie Evans' strange powers, Captain Kirk activates all the starship's interior functions. Then a shimmering alien materializes on the bridge and identifies himself as a Thasian, coming to take Charlie back. As Charlie pleads to stay, the boy vanishes—doomed to spend his life alone with the legendary non-human energy-beings on the bleak planet Thasus.
"There's a milion things in this universe you can have, and a million things you can't have. It's no fun facing that, but that's the way things are." — Capt. Kirk to Charlie Evans |

CHARACTER LOG
"He was just a lonely young man getting his first taste of humanity. I liked what he could have been, what he would never be. At first he respected me. But he put my ship in danger, and he hurt my crew. I knew that Charlie must never reach Colony Alpha Five. If the Thasian had not arrived at that moment, there would only have been one option–I would have found some way to kill Charlie."
— Captain Kirk |

|
CHARACTER LOG
"The Thasians, although advanced, failed to perceive that Charles Evans, with his remarkable abilities, would be dangerous to other species when removed from their influence. Had the boy been properly educated to respect all life forms, Charles might have left Thasus to become a great healer. His lack of discipline instead led to terror and death. Had the Thasians not acted when they did, far graver consequences could have resulted."
— Mr. Spock |

PROFILES
CHARLIE EVANS
At the age of 3, Charlie Evans became the only survivor of a transport crash on planet Thasus, where he grew up among the noncorporeal Thasians, who gave him fantastic telekinetic powers in order to survive. At 17, Charlie was rescued by the science vessel Antares, and later he was brought aboard the Enterprise. The unsuspecting crew of the Enterprise, particularly Captain Kirk and Yeoman Rand, soon took the brunt of Charlie's immense powers. Knowing that Charlie would eventually have destroyed the Enterprise and its crew, the Thasians took Charlie back to their planet, where he presumably lived out the rest of his natural life. |

BEHIND-THE-SCENES
with Bob Justman, Associate Producer
"I persuaded Gene to resurrect the STAR TREK creator's previously 'cut-off' (junked) 'Charlie X' story and assign the teleplay to his then-secretary, and later staff writer, the talented Dorothy C. Fontana. Gene Roddenberry wrote new lyrics for Charlie Is My Darling,' the old folk song that Uhura sang to Charlie X (Robert Walker, Jr.) while a smiling Spock played accompaniment on his Vulcan harp." |

|
BEHIND-THE-SCENES
with D.C. Fontana, Series Writer
"This episode sprang from a story idea Gene Roddenberry included in an early draft of the STAR TREK 'bible.' The story had to demonstrate, in a science fiction manner, Charlie's growing frustration when he couldn't have what he wanted or when discipline was imposed. Thus he banished Janice Rand to an unknown point in space, turned a young woman into an old crone, made a laughing woman faceless, and broke Spock's legs. Although in his twenties at the time, Robert Walker, Jr. played the eighteen-year-old Charlie." |
