"Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before." – Captain Picard |
E2 |
"Captain's Log, Stardate 41153.7. Our destination is Planet Deneb IV, beyond which lies the great unexplored mass of the galaxy. My orders are to examine Farpoint, a starbase built there by the inhabitants of that world. Meanwhile, I'm becoming better acquainted with my new command – this Galaxy-class U.S.S. Enterprise. I'm still somewhat in awe of its size and complexity. As for my crew, we are short in several key positions, most notably a first officer, but I'm informed that a highly experienced man, one Commander William Riker will be waiting to ioin the ship at our Deneb IV destination." – Captain Picard |
E3 |
Captain Picard enters the Bridge of the Enterprise, manned by Lt. Commander Data, Counselor Deanna Troi, Lt. Worf, Lt. Tasha Yar and Lt. Torres. Picard queries Data, an android, as to the difficulty of their mission to Farpoint base – to negotiate a friendly agreement for Starfleet to use the base, while at the same time "snooping" around, finding how and why the life form there built it. Data responds that "snooping" is not a human behavior he was designed to emulate. |
E4 |
Troi suddenly senses what she describes as a powerful mind, and the Enterprise goes to Red Alert. A latticed structure surrounds the ship, and Data suggests it may be solid. Troi offers that it may instead be a very powerful force field. Annoved by the blaring klaxons, Picard orders the crew to go to Yellow Alert and then orders Torres to reverse power and a full stop of the engines. |
E5 |
After the Enterprise pulls to a full stop, a light flashes across the Bridge and a mysterious alien dressed in Elizabethan style garb appears. The alien orders Picard and his crew to return to their own solar system. The stoic and unflappable Picard remarks, "That's quite a directive." and asks the alien to identify himself. The alien replies, "We call ourselves the Q." |
E6 |
While Picard questions Q, Lt. Torres draws a phaser from under his console. Q senses Torres behind him and uses his mysterious powers to flash-freeze the helmsman, who falls to the floor. Picard pulls the weapon from Torres frozen hand and shows Q that the device was merely set to stun. The unflappable Q stands his ground and again orders Picard to return home or die. |
E7 |
"Captain's Log, Supplementary. The frozen form of Lt. Torres has been rushed to Sickbay. The question now is the incredible power of the Q being. Do we dare oppose it?" Q alters his appearance with wardrobe items from other periods of time on Earth, and the alien further elaborates on the savage nature of humans. Meanwhile, Worf and Yar request permission to remove the hostile alien from the Bridge, but Picard refuses to allow it. |
E8 |
Picard continues to defend the human race before the accusatory Q. Picard further suggests that Q represents a recurring theme of self-righteous life forms who are eager not to learn but to prosecute, to judge anything they don't understand or can't tolerate. Q finds the notion of prosecution and judgment fascinating and tells Picard that they will soon meet again and will proceed exactly as he suggests. Q then vanishes in a burst of white light, just as he had arrived. |
E9 |
With Q gone from the Bridge, Troi recommends avoiding further contact with the alien. Picard orders the crew to refrain from any electronic transmissions in order to catch Q by surprise. The Captain prepares the Enterprise for maximum warp and the possibility of saucer section separation as they try to outrun their newfound enemy. They soon warp away from the alien force field, which turns itself into an energy ball that begins to overtake the Enterprise at dangerously high warp speeds. |
E10 |
As the aliens close in on the Enterprise, Captain Picard orders emergency saucer separation, with Lt. Worf taking command of the saucer section. Worf protests, "I am a Klingon, sir. For me to seek escape when my captain goes into battle…" But Picard cuts him off, reminding Worf that he's a Starfleet officer, bound to follow his orders. Worf reluctantly complies. Picard departs via turbolift for the Battle Bridge, with Troi, Data and Yar at his side. |
E11 |
"Captain's log, Stardate 41153.7. Preparing to detach saucer section, so that families and the maiority of the ship's company can seek relative safety, while the vessel's Stardrive, containing the Battle Bridge and main armaments, will turn back and confront the mystery that is threatening us." Picard advises Yar to detonate torpedoes close to the alien vessel at the moment of saucer separation, blinding the hostile ship. He then informs Worf to reverse power just enough to get the saucer section ahead and clear of the remaining part of the ship. |
E12 |
Yar fires torpedoes towards the Q vessel, while the crew initiates saucer separation at a dangerously high speed, in excess of warp nine. The unprecedented separation proves successful, and the saucer section moves away to safety. Meanwhile, Picard orders a full stop to wait for the hostile alien craft to catch up to them. As the vessel approaches, Picard orders Troi to issue the following in all languages and on all frequencies: "We surrender." |
E13 |
Picard. Data, Yar and Troi inexplicably find themselves transported off the Battle Bridge and into a 21st century Earth courtroom, during the period of post-atomic horror. Troi warns that none of it is an illusion or a dream. Yar disarms one of the bailiffs, and Q suddenly emerges as the court's judge. Q orders, "The prisoners will not be harmed… until thev're found guilty." Picard queries, "Can we assume you mean this will be a fair trial?" Q replies, "Yes, absolutely equitable. |
E14 |
A bailiff orders Picard, Data, Yar and Troi to answer for multiple and grievous savageries of their species. Data objects, but Q denies the motion. Yar then rages at Q, insisting that this "so-called court" should get down on its knees to Starfleet and what it represents. Q freezes Yar, and Picard angrily rails against Q, "You've got a lot to learn about humans if you think you can torture us or frighten us into silence…. Assaulting prisoners is hardly a fair trial." Q relents and unfreezes Yar, who appears unharmed. |
E15 |
As Q disappears from the courtroom, Picard, Data, Yar and Troi suddenly find themselves back on the Battle Bridge of the Enterprise, with O'Brien still at the conn, as if the four others hadn't been away at all. They remain headed for Farpoint station. O'Brien asks whether they know anything about Farpoint – that it sounds like a dull place. Picard replies "We've heard that we may find it rather interesting." |
E16 |
"Personal log, Commander William Riker. Stardate 41153.7. The U.S.S. Hood has dropped me off at Farpoint Station, where I await the arrival of the new Enterprise, to which I have been assigned as First Officer. Meanwhile. I have been asked to visit the Farpoint Administrator's Office, in the old city." Riker meets with Groppler Zorn and remarks at how luxurious his accommodations have been. Zorn indicates that they have not yet heard from the Enterprise. |
E17 |
During his meeting with Groppler Zorn, Riker marvels at the advanced quality of materials used to construct Farpoint station, how rapidly the station was built and how perfectiy it suits their needs. Zorn then offers Riker some fruit and a bowl of apples somehow appears where it had not been seen previously. After Riker returns to his quarters, Zorn looks up and speaks to an unseen entity. Zorn warns the entity never to make things appear magically again, or else there will be punishment. |
E18 |
Prior to their joining the Enterprise, Riker seeks out Dr. Beverly Crusher and her son Wesley. Riker wants to investigate some strange occurrences at Farpoint, but the doctor seems disinterested. However, when she notices a gold laced fabric suddenly appearing in a place where it hadn't just been, she too grows suspicious. Lt. Geordi La Forge soon informs Riker that the Enterprise has arrived, but without its saucer section. Riker then beams up to the ship. |
E19 |
Yar greets Riker in the Enterprise transporter room and then escorts him to the Bridge, where Riker formally meets and reports to Captain Picard for the first time. Picard welcomes him aboard and has Yar bring Riker up to speed on their recent encounter with Q. Meanwhile, Data informs the Captain that the ship's saucer module will soon arrive. Picard orders Riker to execute a manual docking of the two parts of the ship. Riker performs the maneuver flawlessly. |
E20 |
After the safe recoupling of the Stardrive and saucer sections of the Enterprise, Picard meets with Riker in the Captain's Ready Room. Picard clarifies some of his expections for his First Officer. In particular, Picard requests, "I would appreciate it if you can keep me from making an ass of myself with children…. I'm not a family man, Riker, and yet, Starfleet has given me a ship with children aboard… I don't feel comfortable with children…. Welcome to the Enterprise, Commander Riker." |
E21 |
Aboard the Enterprise, Dr. Crusher examines Lt. La Forge in Sickbay. La Forge notes that he sees much of the EM spectrum, ranging from simple heat and infrared, through radio waves, etc. He adds that he was born blind, and experiences pain when using his visor. Crusher offers painkillers or surgery, but La Forge declines both options, preferring to live with the discomforts and maintaining the status quo. He thanks Crusher, nonetheless. |
E22 |
While other members of the crew familiarize themselves with the Enterprise, Data escorts Admiral Leonard McCoy via shuttlecraft, rather than via transporter, to the Hood, Riker's former posting. McCoy explains to Data, "Have you got some reason you want my atoms scattered all over space, boy?!" Confounded by Data's demeanor, McCoy adds, "I don't see any points on vour ears, boy, but you sound like a Vulcan." McCoy later adds that Data's new ship, the Enterprise, has the right name and that he should "treat her like a lady, and she'll always bring you home." |
E23 |
As Picard settles into the Bridge of the Enterprise, Q suddenly appears on the viewscreen. Lt. Worf inadvisably draws his phaser, but Picard stops him from blasting a hole in the viewer. Meanwhile, Q warns that they have only 24 hours left and that any further delays will result in summary judgment. Riker asks the Captain how they should proceed, to which Picard responds, "We do exactly what we would do if this Q never existed. If we're going to be damned, let's be damned for what we really are." |
E24 |
"Captain's log, Stardate 41153.8. Of the 24 hours Q allotted us to prove ourselves, 11 have now passed without incident. And yet, I cannot forget Q's prediction that we will face some critical test." Picard and Riker prepare to beam down to Farpoint station, and Picard looks forward to meeting Groppler Zorn. Riker voices his concerns about his experiences at Farpoint to date, but Picard dismisses those experiences as non-threatening. Nevertheless, Picard wonders whether Q is behind what's happening at Farpoint in some kind of effort to trick them. |
E25 |
Picard asks Troi to join him and Riker on their away mission to Farpoint. Troi and Riker lay eyes on each other, and both appear almost paralyzed hy the site of each other. Troi telepathically communicates to Riker. "Do vou remember what I taught vou. Imzadi? Can you still sense mv thoughts?… I too, could never say goodbye, Imzadi." Picard asks if they have met before, and Riker confirms that they have. What Picard doesn't yet know is that the two have had more than a working relationship. |
E26 |
Picard, Riker and Troi beam down to Farpoint and meet with Groppler Zorn. The Starfleet officers try to bargain with Zorn for his people, the Bandi, to help them construct additional planetary stations across the galaxy. Zorn steadfastly refuses. Meanwhile, Troi becomes overwhelmed by a sense of great pain, despair and loneliness from an unidentifiable source. Zorn suddenly becomes agitated and threatens to negotiate with the Ferengi for use of Farpoint. In exasperation, Picard replies. "Fine, I hope they find you as tasty as they did their past associates." |

Back aboard the Enterprise, Riker searches for the android Data, but initially has trouble finding him. The ship's computer informs Riker of Data's whereabouts inside the Holodeck. Riker enters the Holodeck and appears mesmerized by the authenticity of the woodland environment within. He soon meets Data for the first time, and the android explains his Starfleet backaround – Class of '78, with honors in probability mechanics and exobiology. Riker finds Data compelling and suggests he'll be an "interesting companion." |
E28 |
After a misadventure in the Holodeck, Wesley visits his mother, Dr. Crusher, in her Sickbay lab. Wesley asks her about the Captain, and she explains, "Your father liked him very much. Great explorers are often lonely – no chance to have a family." Wesley expresses excitement for a look at the Bridge and promises to remain in the turbolift. His mother initially rebuffs the request but then eases up. "We'll see what we can do," she offers. |
E29 |

Riker leads a landing party, including Data, Troi, Yar and La Forge, back to Farpoint. Riker sends Yar, Troi and La Forge to explore underground, while he and Data remain topside. La Forge soon reports that the caves are completely alien to all of his senses and that the materials are unrecognizable. Reluctantiy, Troi opens her mind and again senses intense pain emanating from a life form completely new and different from anything they've encountered before. Says Riker, "What in the hell kind of place is this?!" |
E30 |
Dr. Crusher brings Wesley to the Bridge of the Enterprise. Picard initially expresses annoyance at the boy's presence, until he realizes that Wesley is Dr. Crusher's son. Picard offers the boy a tour of the Bridge, but warns, "Don't touch anything!" While sitting in the Captain's chair, Wesley reveals an impressive knowledge of the ship's systems. When Wesley suddenly detects a perimeter alert, Picard is not convinced it's real. He angrily orders both Crushers off the Bridge. It soon becomes apparent that there really is a perimeter alert. |
E31 |
Picard orders the immediate return of Riker's away team, as an unidentified ship approaches the Enterprise. The Captain then orders Worf to raise shields and arm phasers. Picard hails Groppler Zorn and asks whether he knows the identity of the alien vessel – perhaps a Ferengi ship. Zorn denies any knowledge of such a ship, which sensors reveal to be twelve times the size of the Enterprise. Worf informs the Captain that the alien ship has scanned them. |
E32 |
The unidentified alien vessel settles into orbit around the planet and suddenly unleashes an unprovoked attack on the Bandi city near Farpoint station. The city is destroyed. Meanwhile, Riker's away team is unable to communicate with the Enterprise while they remain in the underground caves. As they get to the planet's surface and see the damage, Riker orders Troi, Yar and La Forge back to the ship. Riker and Data investigate further. Meanwhile. Groppler Zorn pleads with Picard for help. |
E33 |
Picard orders Riker to bring Groppler Zorn to the Enterprise. Meanwhile, Troi suggests that protecting the Bandi from the attacking aliens may be a violation of the Prime Directive. Picard wrestles with the decision of how to proceed, as the are in active diplomatic discussions with the Bandi. He opts to defend them and orders phasers locked on the alien ship. Suddenly, a flash of white light engulfs the Enterprise, and Q appears on the Bridge: "Typical.
So typical. Savage life forms never follow even their own rules." |
E34 |
"Get off my Bridge!" exclaims Picard. Q replies. "Interesting, that order about phasers…. Please, don't let me interfere. Use your weapons.' Picard arques that his phaser order was a routine safety precaution, while Q questions the Captain's priorities in helping the Bandi people. Picard orders Worf to position the Enterprise between the alien vessel and the planet and to raise shields to full power. Worf quickly discovers that they've lost ship's control, unable to fulfill Picard's order. |
E35 |
Back on the planet, Riker and Data recover from a blast that has destroyed much of the Farpoint station. They soon hear sobbing and find Groppler Zorn hiding under his desk, begging for the onslaught to stop. Riker insists that Zorn provide some explanation for what's happening. Before he can respond, Zorn is mysteriously transported away to an unknown destination. |
E36 |
Back on the Bridge of the Enterprise, Troi suddenly senses enormous satisfaction from an unknown source – not from the planet but from a source much closer to the ship. Q continues to distract Picard, who chides the alien, "Either leave us or finish us!" Q responds, "Temper temper, mon capitaine." Riker and Data beam back to the Bridge, and Riker stands up to Q, who declares. "You show promise, my good fellow," before vanishing from the ship. |
E37 |
At Sickbay, Picard apologizes to Dr. Crusher for failing to welcome her aboard the ship more professionally and for yelling at her son, who seems to have an uncanny knowledge of starship operations. Picard offers to transfer Crusher to another ship, considering that he must be a constant reminder of her husband's untimely death. Crusher insists on remaining in her current post, as it was her request to join his crew. Picard hopes that they can be friends. |
E38 |
With phasers set to stun, Riker leads Data, Troi and Yar on an away team to the mysterious alien vessel responsible for the attack on Farpoint station. Aboard the ship, they find similar construction as they saw in the tunnels beneath the old Bandi city. Troi senses great anger and hate, directed towards the old Bandi city. However, they fail to find any sign of a crew or mechanicals controlling the alien ship. Troi then senses the presence of Groppler Zorn nearby. |
E39 |
Troi leads Riker, Data and Yar to another part of the alien vessel where they find Groppler Zorn enveloped by and tortured within an alien force field. Zorn cries out in agony, "No more! Please, make it stop!… The pain!." Riker and Data fire their phasers and disrupt the force field, freeing Zorn from his torment. The alien ship appears to respond in an angry fashion. |
E40 |
Worf sees threatening activity from the alien ship, and Picard orders the away team to beam back to the Enterprise. However, communications with the away team appear severed. At that moment, Q returns to the Bridge of the ship, dressed like a Starfleet officer, and declares that Picard and his crew have run out of time. Q has disrupted all of the ship's communications and controls. Picard pleads with Q to let him help his people, and implores, "Ill do whatever you say." |
E41 |
Suddenly, the away team, along with Groppler Zorn, appears on the Bridge of the Enterprise. Troi insists that it wasn't Q who returned them safely back, but the alien ship itself, which is actually a living being. Q tries to convince Picard that Troi is mistaken, that he should arm his ship for battle, to destroy the alien vessel. Q desperately wants to instill fear and distrust of the unknown, to prove the charges against humanity. Picard refuses to fall for Q's ploy and orders his crew to stand down. |
E42 |
Picard tells Q that the unknown is what brings humans into space and tests Q's assertion that humans possess inferior intelligence. Picard correctly concludes that the alien vessel and the tunnels beneath Farpoint station are actually living creatures. Zorn states that his people did nothing wrong, that the alien was injured and they helped it to survive. Picard orders Yar to rig phaser banks so that they can deliver an energy beam to Farpoint station. |
E43 |
Riker asserts that it is conceivable that there could be creatures which can convert energy into matter. Just then, the alien vessel transforms into a glant jellyfish-like, space-faring creature. Troi senses that its mate has been surviving, barely, as Farpoint station. That explains the emotions she had been sensing. Picard then orders Yar to deliver as much energy to the Farpoint station as the wounded creature can absorb. |
E44 |
Absorbing the energy beam, Farpoint station transforms into another giant jellyfish-like, space-faring creature – the mate to the one already encountered by the Enterprise. The two creatures are reunited above the planet, and Troi senses overwhelming joy and gratitude from both of them. |
E45 |
As the two giant space creatures are reunited, Picard turns to Q and demands that he leave them alone. "We've passed your little test… Get off my ship!" exclaims Picard. Ever defiant, Q replies, "I do so only because it suits me to, but I will not promise never to appear again." With that, Q vanishes from the Enterprise. |
E46 |
"Captain's log, Stardate 41174.2. The agreement for the rebuilding Farpoint station has been completed per my instructions." Picard then prepares his crew for the Enterprise's departure. "Let's see what's out there. Engage!" |
W1 |
"Captain's Log, Stardate 43989.1. The Enterprise has arrived at Jouret IV in response to a distress signal from one of the Federation's outermost colonies." Worf reports that there have been no communications from New Providence colony in more than twelve hours, and that there are no signs of life on the planet's surface. Chief O'Brien confirms that the surface environment is safe for beaming down to the planet. |
W2 |
Riker leads the away team, including Worf, Data and La Forge, to the surface of Jouret IV. They find no sign of life or any sign of the colony from which the distress signal emanated. Instead, all that remains is a giant crater where New Providence colony should be. O'Brien double checks and confirms that he beamed the away team to the location of the center of the colony, which has simply been obliterated. |
W3 |
"Captain's Log, Stardate 43992.6. Admiral Hanson and Lt. Commander Shelby of Starfleet Tactical have arrived to review the disappearance of New Providence colony. No sign remains of the 900 inhabitants." Riker joins Picard, Hanson and Shelby in the Captain's Ready Room. They assume that the Borg are responsible for the colony's destruction, as the Enterprise had encountered them previously. Shelby has been tasked by Starfleet with a defense strategy and new weapons, but all of that remains in the developmental phase. Riker and Shelby soon depart. |
W4 |
Admiral Hanson suggests to Picard that Commander Shelby would make a terrific First Officer. Picard reminds Hanson that he already has a First Officer in Riker. Hanson reveals that Riker has recently been offered his own ship, the Melbourne, a fact that surprises Picard. Hanson adds, "This is the third time we've pulled out the captain's chair for Riker. He just won't sit down…. He's hurting his career by staying put. If I were you, I'd kick him in the rear end for his own good. |
W5 |
Riker escorts Shelby to her quarters. Shelby theorizes that sections of the Enterprise damaged by the Borg in a previous mission may have left a "Borg footprint." She plans to test her theory when they return to the planet's surface to inspect the remains of the colony. Shelby then takes the discussion in an unexpected, if not uncomfortable direction, when she discusses the prospect of her becoming the new First Officer of the Enterprise under Picard. She has heard rumors of Riker leaving and assumed the vacancy would be open to her. Riker seems taken aback by Shelby's brash assertion. |
W6 |
Riker invites Shelby to the staff poker game in his quarters at seventeen hundred hours. Troi, Data, La Forge and Wesley join the game. Wesley has three jacks showing, but Riker's 7-8-9-10 of hearts with one card in the hole make the young boy nervous. Wesley soon folds, but Shelby calls Riker's bluff, and he reveals the 2 of spades. Shelby takes the pot and proves herself a worthy adversary. |
W7 |
The next morning, a disgruntled Riker discovers that Shelby and Data have already beamed down to the planet's surface to begin investigating the destruction of the colony. When Riker and La Forge join them on the surface, a cheerful Shelby greets them. Riker chastises her for failing to follow his orders. Despite the friction between the two officers, Shelby reports that there's no longer any doubt – the Borg were responsible for the destruction of New Providence. |
W8 |
"Captain's Log, Stardate 43993.5. With confirmation of the Borg's presence in Federation space, Admiral Hanson has returned to Starbase 324 to discuss strategy with Starfleet Command. Lt. Commander Shelby remains on board to continue tactical preparations." Riker informs Picard of the security measures he's implemented to safeguard against another Borg attack in Federation space. Picard then changes the subiect and encourages Riker to look at his career options objectively and to seriously consider taking command of his own ship. |
W9 |
Riker meets Troi in Ten Forward. He laments, "What am I still doing here?… I always said I wanted my own command, and yet something's holding me back. Is it wrong for me to want to stav?… Maybe I'm just afraid of the 'big chair'." Troi offers words of comfort: "You're happy here, happier than I've ever known vou to be. So, it comes down to a simple question: What do you want, Will Riker?" |
W10 |
___
Riker, Shelby, La Forge, Wesley and Data convene to discuss Borg technology and how to combat it. Shelby's projections suggest that a Borg ship could continue to function effectively, even if seventy-eight percent of their vessel were to become inoperable. The Borg ship maintains redundant power sources. La Forge projects it would take eighteen months to complete new weapons systems to combat the Borg, and Shelby suggests even longer. Fatigue soon sets in, and Riker orders them to take a break until 0:500 the next morning. |
W11 |
Admiral Hanson informs Picard and his senior staff that Starbase 157 received a distress signal from the U.S.S. Lalo shortly after encountering a cube shaped vessel. The Lalo has not been heard from since. Picard orders Data to head towards the Lalo's last known location at warp nine. All hands go to battle stations. Shelby and La Forge continue to modify the Enterprise's defense systems in preparation for an encounter with the Borg, but La Forge admits that their effectiveness is "a shot in the dark." |
W12 |
On the Bridge of the Enterprise, Worf reports an unidentified vessel entering sensor range. Picard orders an intercept course, but Worf reports that the mystery ship has already altered its own course to intercept the Enterprise. Picard then orders Worf to send a subspace message to Admiral Hanson: "We have engaged the Borg." |
W13 |
Riker questions whether this Borg ship is the same one faced by the Enterprise at J25, but Data cannot confirm, except to note that this ship has precisely the same dimensions as that previous ship. A Borg voice then commands them to lower their shields and instructs Picard to prepare to transport himself to their vessel. The Borg voice adds that failure to comply will result in destruction of the Enterprise. Picard holds his ground and demands the Borg to withdraw from Federation space. |
W14 |
The Borg cube probes the Enterprise shields and attempts to lock onto the starship with a tractor beam. La Forge modulates shields, but the aliens adapt quickly and lock onto the ship. Picard orders Worf to fire all weapons which have no effect. Soon, the Borg weapons cut through the Enterprise and breach the ship's hull in Engineering. LaForge evacuates Engineering, but eleven crew members die in the attack. Shelby orders Data to fluctuate phaser resonance frequencies, and the Enterprise breaks free of the Borg tractor beam. |
W15 |
The Enterprise warps away, but the Borg cube follows. Picard orders the helm to take the ship inside the nearby Paulson Nebula, which should provide an effective screen against the Borg ship's sensors. Picard then orders La Forge to reverse engines and to bring the ship to a full stop. Soon, the Enterprise becomes completely obscured within the nebula, leaving the Borg neutralized, at least for the moment. Picard states, "As long as thev're looking for us. the won't hurt anyone else." |
W16 |
While the Enterprise remains undetectable inside the Paulson Nebula, Riker, Shelby. La Forge, Data and Wesley analyze their encounter with the Borg cube. They soon devise a plan to concentrate an unprecedented amount of power through the main deflector dish, which they can then use to fire at the Borg ship. Shelby challenges Riker by insisting that they separate the saucer section to create multiple targets, but Riker shoots down the idea, calling it too great a risk. Afterwards, Riker and La Forge commiserate on Shelby's overly aggressive approach. |
W17 |
Riker reports to Picard's Ready Room, only to find Shelby already there. Shelby has defied Riker and presented her idea for separating the saucer section to better combat the Borg. Picard senses Riker's agitation over Shelby's defiance, and he agrees with Riker's position on the matter. However, Picard also encourages Riker to consider her plan as a fallback position in the event that they should need to take great risks at some point in the future. Ever dutiful, Riker follows the Captain's orders. |
W18 |
Riker and Shelby exit the Captain's Ready Room and head to the Battle Bridge. Riker stops the turbolift and confronts Shelby for her lack of discipline and subversion of protocols. "You do an end run around me again, I'| snap you back so hard, you'll think you're a first-year cadet again," says Riker. Shelby holds her ground and responds, "You're in my way…. All you know how to do is play it safe…. If you can't make the big decisions, Commander, I suggest you make room for someone who can. |
W19 |
"Captain's Log, Stardate 43996.2. The Enterprise remains concealed in the dust cloud. And to my surprise, the Borg have maintained their position, waiting for us to come out of hiding. I have no explanation for their special interest in me or this ship. We continue to prepare our defenses for the inevitable confrontation, but I must admit, on this night, I contemplate the distinct possibility that no defense may be adequate against this enemy." Picard takes a brief respite in Ten Forward, where Guinan offers reassurances as the next battle with the Borg looms. |
W20 |
Picard returns to the Bridge as the Enterprise suffers damage from magnetometric charges within the nebula. The Captain then orders Riker to take the ship out of the nebula, but the move enables the Borg cube to follow them out. The Borg soon lock onto them with a tractor beam. Shields once again fail. |
W21 |
As the Borg cube penetrates the Enterprise shields, a Borg drone teleports onto the Bridge. Worf shoots down the drone, but a second drone appears. This new drone adapts to Worf's phaser frequency and deflects the shot. Riker tries hand-to-hand combat, but fails. Worf attacks, but the second drone easily puts him down, too. A third drone then materializes, incapacitates Picard and transports the Captain back to the Borg cube. The other two drones beam back to their ship, which immediately departs the area at warp 9.6 and heads for Earth! |
W22 |
Picard soon finds himself aboard the Borg vessel, and a collective Borg voice addresses him. Picard responds, "I have nothing to say to you, and I will resist you with the last ounce of my strength." The Borg voice replies, "Resistance is futile. We wish to improve ourselves. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own…. To facilitate our introduction into your societies, it has been decided that a human voice will speak for us in all communications. You have been chosen to be that voice." |
W23 |
As the Enterprise chases after the Borg, who have captured Picard, the remaining crew must come up with a plan to rescue the Captain and stop the Borg from reaching Earth. La Forge needs another two or three hours to reconfigure the deflector, and Shelby insists they must get the Borg ship down to impulse speed. Riker announces he'll lead a rescue team, but Shelby obiects. Troi steps in and convinces Riker that, as acting Captain of the ship, he should remain aboard the Enterprise. Riker reluctantly concedes, and Shelby leads the rescue team. |
W24 |
"First Officer's Log, Stardate 43998.5. Our pursuit of the Borg continues on a course that will take us to the very core of the Federation. The devastation they could bring is beyond imagination." Worf provides newly retuned phasers for each member of the rescue team, including Shelby, Data, Dr. Crusher and himself. Shelby notes that the Borg learn to adapt, so they'll get only one or two shots with each phaser. Riker informs the team that they have onlv 58 minutes before the Enterprise will need to power down and disengage. Shelby acknowledges. |
W25 |
Shelby, Data, Worf and Dr. Crusher beam aboard the Borg cube in search of Picard. As they work their way through the alien vessel, they learn details of the Borg's technology that may prove helpful to them later. They continue to pass by eerily dormant Borg drones. Worf soon detects the Captain's communicator. and they hone in on its location, hoping to find Picard. However, they find the Captain's communicator and the rest of his uniform inside a storage compartment. There's no sign of the Captain. |
W26 |
Back aboard the Enterprise, Riker has Admiral Hanson on screen and recommends redeploying all available defenses to protect Sector 001. Hanson tells Riker that Starfleet forces intend to intercept the Borg cube at Wolf 359. Riker informs Hanson that they can only keep up with the Borg for another twenty-two minutes at their current speed, and that if they can't bring the Borg out of warp, they'll do as much damage as possible before disengaging. Riker adds that there's still no progress in their attempts to rescue Picard. |
W27 |
Wesley and La Forge meet Riker and Troi on the Bridge and report that they've succeeded in adapting the main deflector to deliver a crushing blast on the Borg vessel. La Forge notes that the blast will burn out the deflector, but it will be "one helluva bang!" Wesley adds that they'll need to evacuate the entire forward half of the secondary hull and the lower three decks of the saucer section. Troi takes charge of the evacuation, and the crew prepares for a showdown with the Borg. |
W28 |
The away team continues to navigate through the Borg cube without interference from any drones, but that soon changes. When the team fires phasers and destroys several power distribution nodes, several drones awaken and go on the attack. Their phasers continue to work on the initial wave of drones, but soon the Borg adapt. Meanwhile, the disruption to the power nodes forces the Borg cube to drop out of warp and allows the Enterprise to divert warp energy to the main deflector. Riker prepares to assault the Borg vessel. |
W29 |
As the away team continues to fend off Borg drones, Dr. Crusher suddenly recognizes a familiar face. However, as Picard slowly turns towards his colleaques, it quickly becomes apparent that he has been assimilated into the Borg collective, with a variety of implants covering his body. Worf tries to rescue Picard, but a protective force field keeps the Klingon at bay. Sensing that there is no more for them to accomplish without putting their own lives in jeopardy, Shelby orders the Enterprise to beam the away team back to their ship. |
W30 |
Shelby, Data, Worf and Dr. Crusher report back to the Bridge and inform Riker that they could not retrieve the Captain, that he has been altered and turned into a Borg. Shelby and Dr. Crusher argue for more time and another chance to get the Captain back, but Riker remains firm in taking out the Borg cube as soon as possible. Riker can't risk the Borg powering back up to warp speed and resuming their mission to assimilate all of human kind. |
W31 |
As Riker and La Forge prepare to unleash a hellacious assault on the Borg cube, Worf announces that they are being hailed by the Borg. Picard, now as a Borg, appears on the viewscreen and announces, "I am Locutus of Borg. Resistance is futile. Your life as it has been is over. From this time forward, you will service us." Riker wasted no time. His response to Locutus of Borg: "Mr. Worf, FIRE!" |
W32 |
The Enterprise fires an immense concentration of energy through the main deflector, but the Borg ship suffers no damage. The ship's computer warns that the reaction chamber has exceeded its thermal limits and that the warp reactor core is overheated. Riker orders a cease fire and a shutdown of the warp engines. |
W33 |
After failing to damage the Borg cube or to retrieve the Captain. Riker states, "They couldn't have adapted that quickly." The image of Locutus then appears on the viewscreen, and he stoically responds, "The knowledge and experience of the human Picard is part of us now. It has prepared us for all possible courses of action. Your resistance is hopeless. Number One." |
W34 |
"First Officer's Log, Stardate 44001.4. The Borg ship has resumed its course toward Earth. We are unable to pursue, pending repairs to the Enterprise." Riker, along with the rest of the senior staff of the Enterprise, provides a status report to Admiral Hanson, who indicates that Starfleet has now mobilized 40 starships and that the Klingons will be sending warships, too, as they prepare to battle the Borg near Earth. Hanson considers Picard a casualty of war, and promotes Riker to the field commission of Captain of the ship. |
W35 |
The Borg cube warps towards Earth after its encounter with the Enterprise, which has been temporarily neutralized. Aboard the Borg ship, Captain Picard, now known as Locutus of Borg, lies on an operating table while another drone prepares him for additional modifications. A prosthetic arm is soon attached, followed by a neural implant that causes his skin to turn a deathly grayish hue. A teardrop rolls from Picard's eye, suggesting that at least some part of his humanity remains. |
W36 |
Riker and Worf discuss Wesley's suggestion for a new chip design that would automatically retune phasers to a random setting after each discharge. "Were no longer just fighting the Borg. We're fighting the life experience they've stolen from Captain Picard. Now how the hell do we defeat an enemy that knows us better than we know ourselves?" Meanwhile, La Forge and Shelby indicate that they'll need at least a couple more hours before repairs can be completed. Riker compliments Shelby on her role in their encounter with the Borg. |
W37 |
Data informs Riker of a message from Starfleet, which has engaged the Borg at Wolf 359. On the viewscreen, Admiral Hanson announces that the fight has not gone well and that they are withdrawing and regrouping. He instructs Captain Riker to rendezvous with the fleet, when suddenly the transmission fails. "Captain's Log, Stardate 44002.3. Repairs are complete, and the Enterprise is warping to rendezvous with Starfleet at Wolf 359. Communications from the site of battle have been cut off, possibly due to Borg interference." |
W38 |
Captain Riker convenes a meeting with his senior staff. He compliments Worf and Data for their service and lets them know he considered each of them for the position of First Officer. However, he wants all of his regular staff to remain in their existing roles, and instead chooses Shelby as his new First Officer. Riker then asks for input on how next to combat the Borg. Data and Dr. Crusher suggest introducing a destructive breed of nanites into the Borg, but it would take several weeks to execute their plan. None of their other options seem likely to succeed. |
W39 |
In the Captain's Ready Room, Guinan prevails upon Riker. She lets him know that the crew believes they will be dead in the next day or so, but that he can turn this situation around. She further reveals that her relationship with Picard extends beyond friendship, beyond family. She will let him go, and insists that Riker do the same. Riker states, "It's not that simple. This was his crew. He wrote the book on this ship." Guinan responds that the Borg now know everything he knows. "It's time to throw that book away." |
W40 |
As the Enterprise enters the Wolf system, ship's sensors detect several vessels with negligible power readings and no signs of life. With images of the destroyed vessels on the viewscreen, Shelby recognizes several of them, including the Melbourne, the one to which Riker had recently been offered the captaincy. Riker orders Shelby to implement her plan for saucer separation, but when she objects on the basis that the Borg will be prepared for it, Riker says. "I'm counting on it." Riker then announces he has a special mission for Data and Worf…. |
W41 |
Aboard the Battle Bridge, Riker hails Locutus and offers to discuss terms to end the hostilities. As expected, Locutus rejects any such discussions and asserts that they will assimilate the Enterprise and its crew, or destroy them if they attempt to interfere with their assimilation of Earth. Meanwhile, Lt. Gleason pinpoints the source of Borg transmission, and Riker initiates his covert plan with Data and Worf. Shelby then initiates the saucer separation, and Riker and Shelby open fire on the Borg vessel. |
W42 |
The Borg cube attempts to lock a tractor beam onto the Stardrive, while ignoring the saucer section, just as Riker planned. Riker orders evasive maneuvers, pattern Riker Alpha, while Shelby fires a spread of anti-matter towards the Borg ship, which appears to confuse Locutus. Meanwhile, Data and Worf depart in a shuttlecraft that soon penetrates the Borg electromagnetic field, allowing them to transport themselves aboard the Borg cube in search of Locutus. |
W43 |
Aboard the Borg cube, Worf and Data successfully fire their adapted phasers on several drones. They soon find Locutus, whom Worf attempts to overpower. The enhanced version of Picard momentarily fends off Worf but he eventually succumbs, when Data applies a neural tranquilizer to Locutus' neck. The three men beam immediately back to the shuttlecraft. Data quickly fires the small ship's thrusters, enabling them to clear the Borg's electromagnetic field and beam back to the Enterprise, just seconds before the Borg destroy the shuttlecraft. |
W44 |
Shelby announces that they've sustained damage to the impulse drive, while Lt. Gleason detects subspace field fluctuations from the Borg ship. Gleason concludes that the Borg are getting ready to increase power. Riker prepares to distract the aliens from attacking the compromised saucer section, when Wesley reports the Borg ship moving away, heading towards Earth. Riker orders a reconnection with the saucer section. Once the two sections of ship are reattached, Riker lays in a course to pursue the Borg. |
W45 |
In Sickbay, Riker orders Dr. Crusher to revive Locutus. When he awakens, Locutus declares. "A futile maneuver. Incorrect strategy, Number One, to risk your ship and crew to retrieve only one man. Picard would never have approved. You underestimate us if you believe this abduction is any concern. There is no need for apprehension. I intend no harm. No harm. I will continue, aboard this ship, to speak for the Borg, while they continue without further diversion to Sector 001, where they will force vour unconditional surrender." |
W46 |
Riker, Data and Dr. Crusher discuss severing the link between Locutus and the Borg ship, but doing so only without killing him. Data believes he may have a way of accessing Borg data from Locutus. Shelby informs Riker that the Borg have entered Sector 001, but the Enterprise cannot intercept the alien vessel before it reaches Earth. Meanwhile, Locutus tells Worf that the Klingons will also be assimilated, and that the Borg only wish to raise quality of life for all species. When Locutus asks why he resists, Worf replies, "I like my species the way it is." |
W47 |
With the help of Troi, O'Brien and Dr. Crusher, Data establishes a three-part cybernetic, neural connection between his own positronic brain and Locutus. Data soon accesses and processes the Borg subspace signals. Locutus suddenly awakens and tries to free himself, but Data restrains him. Suddenly, Locutus appears to be cooperating, and Troi reports to Riker that Data appears to have made a connection with Picard. Data corrects Troi and reveals that it is actually Picard who has somehow managed to initiate contact with them. |
W48 |
Worf confirms that the Borg have broken through the Mars defense perimeter on their way to Earth. The Borg suddenly halt their approach to Earth, simultaneously with Locutus/Picard communicating with Data. Dr. Crusher suggests that the Borg can't simply disconnect themselves from Locutus/Picard. With that in mind, Riker asks Data whether he can plant a command into the Borg collective consciousness through Locutus – perhaps for them to disarm their weapons system? |
W49 |
The Borg cube locks onto the Enterprise with a tractor beam and activates a cutting beam to slice through sections of the ship's hull. Riker assumes all hope is now lost, and orders the crew to prepare for a collision course at warp speed with the Borg cube. Meanwhile, Locutus/Picard utters, "Sleep…. Sleep, Data." The android correctly interprets this messace and plants a command into the Borg collective consciousness. His message misdirects the Borg to believe it is time to regenerate. "In effect, I put them all to sleep," states Data. |
W50 |
Riker orders Shelby to take an away team to confirm that the Borg are, in fact, asleep. Shelby, Worf and a security officer beam over to the Borg cube, where all the drones appear in a dormant state. Shelby reports that the Borg power net is about to overload itself. "I'd say we're looking at a self-destruct sequence activated by the Borg malfunction," declares Shelby. Riker orders the away team back. Dr. Crusher worries what the destruction of the Borg ship might do to Picard, but Riker remains resolved to allow the Borg to destroy themselves. |
W51 |
With the away team back aboard the Enterprise, Riker orders Wesley to move the ship to a safe distance away from the Borg cube. A huge explosion then destroys the Borg vessel. Picard stumbles momentarily, as his connection to the Borg has been severed by the destruction of the alien ship. Dr. Crusher announces that his life signs are stable and his DNA is returning to normal. Troi asks Picard how he feels. Picard replies, "Almost human, with just a bit of a headache." Riker asks him how much he remembers. Picard replies. "Everything." |
W52 |
After having the bulk of his Borg implants and prosthetics removed,
Picard returns to his role as Captain of the Enterprise, and Riker returns to his position as First Officer. Riker reports that Earth Station McKinley will be able to refit and repair the Enterprise within five or six weeks. Shelby then reports and requests permission to disembark, which Picard grants. She expresses her thanks and hopes to have the fortune of serving again with Riker. Shelby then departs. |
W53 |
After Riker departs the Captain's Ready Room, Captain Picard picks up his customary cup of tea, but then pauses. He puts down the tea and turns to the window. Picard looks out over the beautiful planet Earth beneath him. Although now severed from the Borg Collective, Picard ponders his assimilation into such an evil alien force. More importantly, what does the future hold when they encounter the Borg next time? |
