Running From the Past
Montgomery Scott and Pavel Chekov stand in a vast wheat field searching the bright midday sky. Suddenly a double sonic boom shakes the ground and moments later a man in a high-tech body harness and parachute lands nearby. Captain James T. Kirk has completed a daring, orbital skydive. Greeted by his friends, Kirk muses on other thrill-seeking he can do when he is reminded of the christening ceremony for the U.S.S. Enterprise™ NCC-1701-B the very next day. Kirk refuses to go. |
2 |
|
Old Emotions
Kirk, Scott and Chekov are the guests of honor at the christening ceremony of Starfleet's newest U.S.S. Enterprise,™ the Excelsior Class NCC-1701-B. This is the first Starship Enterprise built in over twenty years that has not been under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. Conflicting emotions rage within him as journalists and cameramen surge forward with questions. |
3 |
|
Welcome Aboard
Captain John Harriman disperses the journalists and officially welcomes Kirk, Scott and Chekov aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.™ This is Harriman's first command, and he is honored to have Starfleet's finest on his ship's maiden voyage. Chekov spots a familiar face at the helm – Ensign Demora Sulu. Kirk shakes the pretty young woman's hand, learning that she is Hikaru Sulu's daughter. Kirk wonders how Sulu managed to find the time to have a family. |
4 |
|
A Change of Plans
The U.S.S. Enterprise™ is to make a quick trip around the Solar system and return, but plans change when they intercept a distress call from the Lakul, a transport ship caught in a powerful energy distortion. Harriman hesitates to take action – the U.S.S. Enterprise is the only starship in range, but she is not yet fully manned or equipped. After answering the call, Kirk is noticeably anxious to act, but keeps his place until Harriman finally seeks his advice. Kirk's plan – maneuver the ship just close enough to the ribbon to beam the Lakul's survivors aboard. |
5 |
|
Phasing Through Time
The U.S.S. Enterprise's™ transporters have trouble locking onto the Lakul's passengers, whose life signs mysteriously phase in and out of the space/time continuum, an effect apparently caused by the strange energy ribbon. Only forty-seven of the Lakul's passengers are beamed safely to the Starship Enterprise's Sickbay before the transport ship's hull collapses. Without a medical staff aboard, Chekov and two journalists tend the survivors, but they find that injuries are far more psychological than physical. Many mumble incoherently while others just sit and stare into space. |
6 |
|
Two Among Many
Chekov and the journalists do their best to tend the rescued El-Aurians, but they are suffering from severe shock. From the speech of the survivors, it is apparent that they have suffered in unconventional ways from their contact with the mysterious energy ribbon. Among them is a dark-skinned woman – Guinan – and a white-haired man with a wound on his face. The man suddenly attacks one of the journalists, crying out that he must "get back," and Chekov has no choice but to sedate him. |
7 |
|
Trapped
The U.S.S. Enterprise™ is caught in the gravimetric field of the energy ribbon which threatens to crush the starship's hull. When the engines don't respond and hull integrity starts to fail, Captain Harriman is at a loss. Scotty suggests that an antimatter discharge directly in the ship's path might disrupt the field and allow them to escape. A photon torpedo would provide such a discharge, but the new ship hasn't yet been equipped with them… |
8 |
|
There's Always a Way
Harriman is embarrassed that his ship is so ill-equipped for the emergency, but Scotty's engineering genius comes up with an alternate solution – they might be able to simulate a photon torpedo blast using a resonance burst from the main deflector dish. Kirk volunteers to recircuit the deflector relays, which are located on deck fifteen, section twenty-one alpha. He exits the bridge, leaving Scotty behind to hold the ship together as it shudders in the energy ribbon's grip. |
9 |
|
Race Against Time
Kirk races into the U.S.S. Enterprise's Deflector Room and pulls the cover from a wall panel. As he frantically re-routes the complex circuitry, the Starship Enterprise continues to shake under the force of the energy ribbon's pull. With less than a minute to total structural collapse, Kirk gives Scotty the all-clear and Harriman gives the command to activate the main deflector… |
10 |
|
Uncertain Victory
The U.S.S. Enterprise's™ main deflector shoots out a burst of energy that explodes in front of the ship. The energy ribbon fluctuates in response and the Starship Enterprise is free, but damage to the ship is severe – buckling on the starboard nacelle and a hull breach in Engineering, sections twenty through twenty-eight on decks thirteen, fourteen and fifteen. The bridge personnel realize that the Deflector Room must have been affected and Scotty calls desperately for Kirk. There is no answer… |
11 |
|
Blink of an Eye
Scotty, Chekov and Harriman race down the corridor of deck fifteen, heading for the Deflector Room where Kirk was working – but the corridor stops in a gaping hole bordered by twisted metal. Empty space yawns before them, its deadly vacuum held at bay by the ship's powerful force field. The three officers stare through the hole and into the glittering void beyond, stunned. It took mere moments for James T. Kirk to save the U.S.S. Enterprise™ and now, in the blink of an eye, he is gone. |
12 |
|
The Good Ship U.S.S. Enterprise
The 19th-century sailing vessel Enterprise gently rocks on the open sea. Captain Jean-Luc Picard stands on the quarterdeck and surveys his crew, assembled before him on the main deck in full dress uniform. Picard's second-in-command, Commander William Riker, calls aloud for "the prisoner." Lieutenant Worf, shackled by hand and leg irons, is brought forward by Counselor Deanna Troi and Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge. |
13 |
|
Crime and Punishment
As the assembled crew looks on, Riker unrolls a scroll and reads a long list of serious charges against Worf. The Klingon officer is accused of performing his duties aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise™ to such a high degree that there can be no other course of action for Picard than to pronounce immediate punishment – promotion to Lieutenant Commander! The crew cheers and applauds their approval. |
14 |
|
A Ceremonial Dip
Worf has been promoted, but the ceremony isn't over.
Now he must earn his "badge of office" – he is pushed onto a plank that extends over the ship's side, and a crewman up on a yardarm lowers a 19th-century naval officers hat from a rope. Worf must jump up and grab the hat without falling. The assembled crewmen are ready to witness an amusing failure, but Worf disappoints them all by succeeding. With an order to the computer, Commander Riker 'removes' the plank, sending Worf plunging into the ocean! |
15 |
|
Not Clear On the Concept
Watching Worf plunge into the freezing-cold water, Data analyzes the ever-confusing concept of humor. Data is unable to grasp the humor in this situation and confesses to Doctor Crusher about it. Crusher tries to assure Data that such practical jokes are all in fun – so Data pushes her over the side of the ship and into the water. When no one finds this act funny, least of all the doctor, Data is left more confused than ever. |
16 |
|
Bad News
Picard is interrupted from his enjoyment of the holodeck activities by a subspace message. Agitated by the news in this message, he exits the holodeck, leaving Riker in command. But an urgent call from the bridge halts the fun for everyone – the nearby Amargosa observatory is under attack. The crew hasten from the holodeck and, still in their ancient naval uniforms, regroup on the bridge. When they reach the observatory, it is scorched and pitted – they are too late. Out of nineteen on the station, sensors indicate only five life signs. |
17 |
|
Among Ruins
Picard sends Riker, Worf and Doctor Crusher to the observatory to investigate and locate survivors. The Away Team materializes in the smoking ruins of the Operations Center. While Crusher tracks down the life readings on her tricorder, Riker and Worf determine that the damage was caused by type-three disruptor fire, suggesting that the attack was perpetrated by Klingons, Breen or Romulans. |
18 |
|
Questions and Answers
The Away Team finds one conscious survivor – Doctor Tolian Soran. He is not injured, but there is a large scar on his face from an earlier wound. He does not know who attacked the observatory, but the security guards solve the puzzle when they uncover a Romulan body in the debris. Aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.™ Data's confusion about human emotions spurs him to make a momentous decision – he decides to risk installing the emotion chip made by Doctor Soong into his neural net. |
19 |
|
Feeling the World
With the emotion chip in place, the familiar sights and sounds of the U.S.S. Enterprise™' take on a whole new dimension for Data. Adjusting to the new input is a challenge, especially when Geordi accompanies him to Ten Forward, where Guinan greets them by opening a bottle of strange liquid from Forcas Three. Data takes a sip, but is unable to comprehend his emotional response. Both Geordi and Guinan recognize that Data hates the beverage. Eager to relive this new, revolting experience. Data requests a refill. |
20 |
|
Soran's Request
Doctor Soran has urgently requested to speak with Picard in Ten Forward. He explains to the captain that he is anxious to return to the observatory to complete an experiment he was running on the Amargosa star. Picard, still noticeably distracted by his personal message, has little patience for the intense scientist. He tells Soran of his decision – no one is allowed back onto the observatory until the investigation of the attack has been completed. but he will consider the request. |
21 |
|
A Familiar Face
Picard leaves Doctor Soran in Ten Forward. Soran, sure that he has made his urgent request clear to the Captain, turns to go as well – and suddenly spies Guinan behind the bar. A dark look crosses his face as he recognizes her, a dim, unwanted memory from seventy-eight years past. Guinan senses his scrutiny and looks out at the sea of faces in the bar, wondering. Her eyes just miss Soran's hasty exit. After a moment's pause, Guinan returns to her task. |
22 |
|
Seeking Trilithium
The diagnosis of a Romulan tricorder found on the observatory reveals that the Romulans were searching for an unstable compound called Trilithium. Riker sends Data and Geordi to the observatory, to expand the search for this substance. With the aid of his VISOR, Geordi discovers a hidden doorway in a bulkhead, with no apparent controls. When scans reveal the doorway to be magnetically sealed, Data is able to open it by adjusting the polarity in the circuitry of his right forearm. |
23 |
|
Emotional Overload
Geordi and Data examine the hidden room aboard the observatory. Not only are its walls heavily shielded, making outside communications impossible, but it contains racks of probes inside, in particular a strangely configured solar probe. When Geordi's VISOR picks up emanations from the theta band – a possible trilithium signature – Data laughs at the news. He continues to laugh and display an entire range of emotions as his positronic relays are overloaded by the emotion chip. |
24 |
|
Soran Makes His Move
Data's seizure reaches a climax and he collapses on the floor. The emotion chip has overloaded his positronic relays, and Geordi wants to take him back to the U.S.S. Enterprise™ immediately. But the room's shielded walls make contacting the ship impossible. When Doctor Soran appears, Geordi asks for help moving Data clear of the shielding. Soran responds by punching Geordi, dislodging his VISOR. Data simply watches this burst of violence, totally overwhelmed with the emotion of fear. |
25 |
|
Last of a Line
In the privacy of his quarters, Picard thumbs through an old-fashioned photo album, lost in memories as he gazes at pictures of his brother Robert, Robert's wife Marie and their young son René. Troi enters and, concerned about Picard's moodiness, helps him unburden the horrible news that he received in the holodeck – that Robert and René are dead. Along with this tragedy, Picard must deal with the further emotional burden that, without his brother's son, the Picard family line will end. |
26 |
|
Implosion
Soran has launched the trilithium-laden solar probe from the observatory's hidden storage room, and the Amargosa star implodes. The U.S.S. Enterprise™ must leave the area before the shock wave hits, but the Transporter Room reports they've lost contact with Geordi and Data aboard the observatory. With only a few minutes to spare, Riker and Worf rush to the observatory to find their missing comrades before the station is destroyed. |
27 |
|
Two Minutes Left
Riker and Worf beam over to the observatory to find Geordi unconscious and Data helplessly paralyzed with fear. Soran holds them prisoner in the probe room and refuses to acknowledge that a level twelve shock wave will destroy the entire Amargosa system in less than two minutes. He keeps Riker and Worf at bay with disruptor fire until his communicator beeps – as Riker, Worf and Data watch in surprise, Soran and Geordi disappear in the shimmer of a transporter beam. |
28 |
|
Enemies Decloak
On the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise,™ Picard is shocked when a Klingon Bird-of-Prey decloaks near the observatory. Soran has beamed up to the alien ship with Geordi as his prisoner. Riker, Wort and Data make it back to the U.S.S. Enterprise and the starship warps out of range just as the shock wave hits the observatory and vaporizes it. Aboard the Klingon ship, renegade sisters Lursa and B'Etor watch the violent death of the Amarosa sun with awe. |
29 |
|
Bickering Among Thieves
Soran steps out onto the Bird-of-Prey's bridge and, without a word, belts B'Etor in the face, knocking her off her feet. B'Etor barely stops the Klingon crew from retaliating when Soran voices his disappointment with the sisters. When they stole the trilithium from the Romulans, they apparently left enough evidence behind to allow the Romulans to trace it to the observatory. If not for the unexpected arrival of the U.S.S. Enterprise,™ the trilithium might have been recovered. The Duras sisters are unimpressed by Soran's rage, but need him and his weapon for their own plans. |
30 |
|
Target: Veridian
Lursa and B'Etor have obtained enough Romulan trilithium to fulfill Soran's needs. Now they tire of waiting for him to pay them their fee – a trilithium weapon of unlimited power that will help them conquer the Klingon Empire. Soran will not be intimidated, however – his agenda is firm. He will first go to the Veridian system to pursue his own goals, and even the Klingon sisters cannot dissuade him. |
31 |
|
Stuck With Emotions
Geordi's unconscious body is brought to the Bird-of-Prey's bridge. Soran is not yet finished with his Starfleet prisoner and orders Geordi to be taken to his quarters. Aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise,™ Doctor Crusher examines Data's positronic brain. She determines that the emotion chip has, indeed, fused into Data's neural net. Data, however, is overwhelmed with concern for the fate of his friend, Geordi. |
32 |
|
The Nexus
Picard learns that Guinan was aboard the Lakul with Soran 78 years earlier. When he asks her about the incident, Guinan tells him about the nexus, explaining that the energy ribbon that destroyed the Lakul is actually a traveling doorway into a dimension described as a virtual Eden. She and the other Lakul survivors had phased into it when their ship was caught in the ribbon, and none of them had wanted to leave. Guinan is sure that Soran's mission is to regain the nexus. and he will do anything to accomplish that. |
33 |
|
Interrogation
Fearing that Picard may know his plans, Soran questions Geordi about the U.S.S. Enterprise's™ activities aboard the Amargosa observatory and just what Picard knows about trilithium. To assure Geordi's cooperation, he has injected a nano-probe into the chief engineer's bloodstream that stops his heart for seconds at a time – a trick he picked up from the Borg. Regardless of the pain, Geordi cannot tell what he does not know. |
34 |
|
The Price of Emotions
Picard and Data meet in the Stellar Cartography room and use the ship's galactic mapping system to study the energy ribbon's course. The ribbon is indeed a conflux of temporal energy following a path that brings it through the galaxy every thirty-nine years, and it will travel through their present sector in approximately forty-two hours. As they work, Picard notes that Data is preoccupied. The android admits to feelings of remorse and regret at his actions on the observatory leading to Geordi's capture. |
35 |
|
Soran's Plan
Data's calculations reveal Soran's plan – by using trilithium to destroy select stars, shock waves are gradually shifting the ribbon's course. By blowing up the Veridian sun, Soran will maneuver the ribbon into finally touching a class-M planet – Veridian Three. The shock wave of the sun's explosion won't reach Verdian Three for several minutes, plenty of time for Soran to enter the nexus once again. Picard orders the U.S.S. Enterprise™ to the Veridian system, where two hundred thirty million lives are in danger. |
36 |
|
Bargains and Threats
The Duras sisters demand payment from Soran before they beam him down to Veridian Three. He gives them a computer chip that contains the information they'll need to make a trilithium weapon – but he won't give them the code to unlock the chip until he's safely on the planet's surface. Aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise,™ Picard hails the Klingon ship, demanding Geordi's release. He now knows Soran's plan and will not allow the scientist to destroy the Veridian star and with it, the population of Veridian Four. |
37 |
|
To Stop a Madman
The energy ribbon is less than an hour from the Veridian system, and though Picard has hailed the Klingon ship, Soran has not responded. When the Bird-of-Prey finally decloaks and opens communication, Picard learns that Soran is already on the surface of Veridian Three. The Duras sisters agree to release Geordi – in exchange for another prisoner. Picard volunteers, if he can soeak with Soran first. Through simultaneous beaming, Geordi is returned to the U.S.S. Enterprise™ and Picard is beamed to Soran's coordinates. |
38 |
|
Complications
Picard materializes on the surface of Veridian Three and watches as Soran works on the probe launcher that stands next to a complex scaffolding leading to a ledge a dozen meters high. Picard can do nothing to stop Soran from executing his plan – the launcher and scaffolding are surrounded by a force field. Aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise,™ Doctor Crusher successfully removes the nano-probe from Geordi, unaware that the Duras sisters are watching her every move through Geordi's Soran-modified VISOR. |
39 |
|
Cunning Strategy
Before releasing the Chief Engineer, Doctor Soran modified Geordi's VISOR. The prosthetic now transmits its visual input to the Klingon vessel! Lursa and B'Etor watch their viewscreen, carefully following Geordi's point of view as he moves through the U.S.S. Enterprise. When he finally enters Engineering, they are able to read a monitor that displays the starship's shield modulation frequency. The sisters gleefully adjust their own torpedo frequency to match and attack the now virtually defenseless Starship Enterprise. Their torpedoes penetrate the starship's shields and tear directly into her hull. |
40 |
|
Counter-Attack
The U.S.S. Enterprise™ is helpless against the Klingons' vicious attack. As the hull is breached by direct torpedo hits and the number of casualties rise, Riker executes a desperate plan – by sending a low-level ionic pulse to the old-style Bird-of-Prey, the old Klingon ship's defective plasma coils are triggered and it cloaks, automatically causing the shields to drop. While the ship is vulnerable, Worf fires a spread of photon torpedoes that blast it to fragments. |
41 |
|
Warp Core Breach
The Klingon Bird-of-Prey has been destroyed, but the U.S.S. Enterprise™ has sustained severe damage. In Engineering, Geordi calls up to the bridge, "We've got a new problem…" the magnetic interlocks are ruptured, and when a coolant leak erupts and Engineering must be evacuated, there is no way to repair the damage – warp core breach is imminent. Riker has no choice but to order the evacuation of the stardrive section of the ship and prepare to separate the saucer. |
42 |
|
A Way In
As U.S.S. Enterprise™ personnel quickly evacuate to the ship's saucer section, Picard watches helplessly while Soran begins the probe launcher's automatic countdown sequence. Picard tries to reason with the man, but to no avail – Soran has no qualms about destroying the Veridian sun and with it, the millions of lives on Veridian Four. But with only minutes before the probe's launch and the arrival of the energy ribbon, Picard suddenly sees his chance – a small gap in the base of the force field made by a pile of rocks… |
43 |
|
Out of Control
The saucer section of the U.S.S. Enterprise™ separates from the damaged secondary hull, but is not fast enough – the warp core explodes and the force of the blast throws the saucer towards Veridian Three. Helm controls go off-line and the saucer plummets out of control. The bridge crew watch the main viewscreen that displays the planet surface rushing straight at them. Data, struggling with another new emotion – terror, desperately attempts to level the saucer's descent as crew and civilians brace for impact. |
44 |
|
Crash Landing
The U.S.S. Enterprise™ saucer gouges into the surface of Veridian Three, leaving a giant trough of destruction in its wake. Fires erupt from overloaded circuitry, furniture smashes into walls, and no matter how well braced, crew and civilians are thrown to the floor or into bulkheads. All ship's systems fail as the saucer finally grinds to a stop. Riker, sprawled on the floor amidst the wreckage of the bridge, glances up to see a startling sight – sunlight streaming down from the shattered dome overhead. |
45 |
|
Family of Dreams
Picard penetrates Soran's force field, but too late – the probe launches, the sun darkens and the energy ribbon descends upon them. A moment later, Picard finds himself in a home that is somehow familiar. There is a woman he knows is his wife and children that are, somehow, his own. Guinan appears – the part of her that remained behind in the nexus 78 years earlier. She tells Picard that the nexus can be anything he wants it to be, and that Soran is now wherever he most wanted to be. Guinan explains that within the nexus, time has no meaning. |
46 |
|
Meeting Across Time
Picard almost succumbs to the temptation of the nexus illusion, and the appearance of his young nephew, René, but he cannot forsake his duty – he must find a way to stop Soran from ever launching his probe. Guinan knows just the man to help, and suddenly Picard is standing before a rustic house in the Canadian Rockies talking to Captain James T. Kirk. Despite Picard's attempts to enlist Kirk's help, Kirk is caught in the nexus illusion and is determined to relive this day in order to create a happier future for himself. |
47 |
|
A Chance to Start Again
Picard finds himself in a barn with Kirk. Both are surprised at the sudden shift in location, but then Kirk is delighted when he realizes he's back in lowa on the day he first met Antonia. Kirk is convinced the nexus is letting him start his life over again, and this time he won't trade family for career. He saddles a horse and rides away to meet the woman he plans to marry, leaving Picard with no choice but to saddle another horse and follow. |
48 |
|
Bitter Illusion
Eager to meet up with Antonia, Kirk rides his horse at a swift gallop through the forest, approaching a deep, wide ravine. Kirk has successfully jumped this ravine many times in the past and, once again he sails up and over. But strangely, the brief terror he always felt at the jump doesn't touch him, and he feels no sense of triumph afterwards. Kirk realizes that Picard is right – nothing within the nexus is real. He is living nothing more than an illusion of the past. |
49 |
|
Challenge Accepted
When Picard catches up with Kirk, the 23rd-century captain has accepted the fantasy of his surroundings. He seems to see Picard for the first time, marveling at meeting a future captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise.™ Picard entreats him to leave the nexus and return with him to reality, to help stop Soran and, for the first time in 78 years, 'make a difference' again. With such a challenge laid before him, Kirk accepts, saying, "sounds like fun." |
50 |
|
Second Time Around
As Soran readies his probe for launching, he is confronted by a captain – but this time it is James Kirk facing him. Soran finds himself between the two starship captains and makes a split-second decision, jumping over the side of the bridge. Kirk follows after Soran, leaving Picard to shut down the launcher, with only minutes before the energy ribbon is due to appear. |
51 |
|
Guesswork
Kirk searches the ravine area for signs of Doctor Soran. As he approaches a particularly steep cliff edge, Kirk is attacked by Doctor Soran. Still armed with his disruptor, Soran quickly takes the upper hand in the combat. When it appears that Soran is going to shoot Kirk, he is suddenly attacked. Picard distracts Soran's attention, allowing Kirk to land a punch which sends the doctor down the cliff's edge. Unseen by either captain, Soran is able to grab hold of a rope and stop his fall, slamming into the rockface. |
52 |
|
Hanging in the Balance
Soran, hanging from the rope, is able to pull a control PADD out of his pocket, and make some adjustments. As the captains approach the probe, it suddenly cloaks! When the rope slips and recatches on the scaffolding, Soran is jolted and drops the control PADD. It falls to a precarious bridge below. Working together, the captains run for the control. When Soran fires upon the bridge, it is nearly destroyed, and Picard is just able to save Kirk. As the two head back up towards the still-cloaked launcher, they realize that Soran is nowhere to he seen… |
53 |
|
Tense Seconds
Spotting the control PADD for the launcher on the remains of the bridge, Kirk heads back for it, while Picard heads up to the probe. As Kirk climbs out along a broken half of the bridge, Picard reaches the launcher platform. Kirk, with the bridge collapsing under him, makes a fateful decision – and leaps for the other half of the bridge and the PADD. Kirk is able to de-cloak the probe just as the bridge collapses, plummeting down the ravine. At the probe, Picard is able to manipulate some of the alien controls before Saran reappears with his disruptor. Soran reaches the controls, and the ribbon is in sight. Activating the launch, a panel tells Soran that the locking clamps are engaged, and the whole platform explodes. |
54 |
|
A Final Resting Place
Climbing down the ravine, Picard comes to Kirk's body, buried in the wreckage of the bridge. Alone in a vast wilderness, Picard can only watch as James T. Kirk dies. But even as the last breath leaves Kirk's body, Picard knows that a world still exists, and millions of innocent people are still alive, because of Kirk's actions. They made a difference. He buries the legendary Starfleet officer there on the mountain as the Veridian sun, whole and unharmed, shines down upon them. When a U.S.S. Enterprise™ shuttlecraft arrives later, Picard leaves the site, very much aware of the soul left behind. |
55 |
|
Tears of Joy
The Starship Farragut orbits Veridian Three and begins to beam aboard U.S.S. Enterprise™ survivors. Within the wreck of the saucer, Data and Troi use a tricorder to search for life signs. Data has decided to keep his emotions chip, for now at least. Adjustment has been difficult, but he is making progress. But when their tricorder locates Data's pet cat, Spot, hiding under debris, Data wonders if the emotions chip is malfunctioning – if he feels so happy to find Spot, why is he crying? |
56 |
|
Full Circle
Picard and Riker search the ruins of the Ready Room, and Picard is relieved when Number One pulls a book from the debris – Picard's family album. The last few days have forced Picard to examine his life from a new perspective, and he hopes that perhaps, finally, he has come to terms with the tragic loss of his brother and nephew. Nothing lasts forever, after all, and from ashes comes new life. So it will be for him, and so it will be for the voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise.™ |
|
Character Cards |
57 |
|
Captain Jean-Luc Picard
Picard has commanded the U.S.S. Enterprise™ for seven years. A stalwart and dedicated Starfleet officer, he is also deeply proud of his French heritage. Perhaps the only gap in his life is the fact that he does not have a family of his own. Instead, in order to pursue his career, he has left the continuance of the family name to his brother, Robert, whose sudden death, along with his nephew René, has left Picard shattered by grief and plagued by guilt that the Picard family line will end. |
58 |
|
Captain James T. Kirk
One of the greatest living legends in Starfleet history, Kirk embodies all the qualities of the classic hero – he is noble, brave, and daring as well as impetuous and even stubborn. In his many years of service, Kirk has discovered worlds, crossed dimensions and challenged 'gods' – yet now in his retirement years, he finds himself alone. He has friends, but he never made time for a family, and now, too late, he realizes that one of life's greatest pleasures will never be his. |
59 |
|
Commander William T. Riker
"Number One" is Executive Officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise™ and commander of all away teams. As such, he is always in the thick of the action. Riker has turned down offers of his own ship three times, preferring to serve under Picard, for whom he has great respect and affection. When the Starship Enterprise is destroyed under Riker's command, Picard knows that it is through no fault of his second, whose quick thinking in the midst of disaster saved the crew and civilians, if not the ship itself. |
60 |
|
Lieutenant Commander Data
An android designed and constructed by the Human cybernetics genius Doctor Noonien Soong, Data has been legally declared a life form and granted full civil rights. Data's greatest desire is to become completely human, but one aspect of human behavior eludes him – emotions. He does possess an "emotions chip" created for him by Soong, but he has been reticent to use it. Only when the concept of humor becomes too much of a puzzle does Data finally install the chip, enduring both the attributes and detriments emotions can bring. |
61 |
|
Dr. Beverly Crusher
As Chief Medical Officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise,™ Beverly Crusher is the only person aboard ship with the power to relieve the Captain of command. She once left the Starship Enterprise to accept the post of head of Starfleet Medical, but she returned a year later. Crusher's skills are such that she is able to diagnose and treat humans and aliens alike. She is even able to examine Data's positronic circuitry and confirm that the emotions chip has indeed fused into his neural net, though treatment is better left to cyberneticists. |
62 |
|
Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge
Geordi is an unusually gifted Chief Engineer whose mechanical talents are actually enhanced by his VISOR, a prosthetic device that allows the blind man to see better than a 'normally' sighted person. Geordi is a gentle, sympathetic person and has much understanding for his friend Data, and helps him in his constant search for 'humanity.' It is Geordi who implants Data's emotion chip and follows the android afterwards, ready to act should the chip malfunction. |
63 |
|
Lieutenant Commander Deanna Troi
Holding the rank of Lieutenant Commander, Troi is the half-Human/half-Betazoid ship's counselor. Because of her mixed heritage, she does not possess full Betazoid telepathic abilities – she is limited to empathic contact. But her counsel is indispensable on the bridge, where Picard makes full use of all information she can glean from alien contacts. When Picard is devastated by the death of his brother and nephew, it is Troi who finally helps him articulate his sorrow. |

Lieutenant Commander Worf
Recently promoted to Lieutenant Commander, Worf is the first Klingon to serve in Starfleet. His gruff exterior and harsh manners have made his integration into the U.S.S. Enterprise™ family slow, but under the warrior's mask lies a dedicated, loyal officer that Picard and his crew have come to respect and admire. His promotion ceremony is performed by his friends in an ancient and to him, alien manner. Worf, true to his heritage, rises to the occasion in a warrior's fashion and grabs the 'Badge of Office.' |

Guinan
Little is known about the hostess of the Ten-Forward Lounge. Like Soran, she is a member of a "race of listeners" called the El-Aurians, whose world was destroyed by the Borg. One of Guinan's more unusual talents is an ability to sense beyond normal space-time. This ability has always been a mystery to Picard, but is finally clarified when Guinan tells him of the mysterious nexus and her encounter with it 78 years prior. |

|
Doctor Tolian Soran
Soran, an El-Aurian, is over three hundred years old. He lost his family when the Borg destroyed his home planet and now, 78 years later, he has but one hope for happiness – the nexus. Though it destroyed his refugee ship, the Lakul, it showed him a dimension of endless joy that he has been searching for ever since. Over the years Soran has gone mad in his search, and now he will do anything, regardless of the consequences, to enter the nexus again. |

Lursa and B'Etor
These powerful Klingon sisters are members of the politically influential Duras family. At one time highly influential on the Klingon High Council, the Duras family has now fallen, and Lursa and B'Etor are determined to rectify that situation. By any means available they have been obtaining resources to build an army that will one day bring the Council under their influence. Their alliance with Soran may provide them with a trilithium weapon powerful enough to accomplish their goal. |

Montgomery Scott and Pavel Chekov
Scotty and Chekov are members of the family of officers who served on the U.S.S. Enterprise™ under Captain Kirk, and their friendship has spanned decades. Both men are honored guests, invited to the christening ceremony of the new Excelsior Class Starship U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701-B. When called into action during the Lakul rescue, their skills and resourcefulness save the ship and the lives of the last El-Aurians, among them Guinan. |

Captain John Harriman
The new Excelsior Class U.S.S. Enterprise™ carries with it a great heritage. Captain John Harriman, the commander of this new vessel, faces a tremendous challenge of exploration into the great unknown. He takes this appointment seriously and is confident of his abilities, yet he is not above asking for advice in a pinch – he knows that he still has much to learn. When the Starship Enterprise must approach the energy ribbon to aid the Lakul, Harriman is at first reluctant to endanger his ship – but he performs his duty, reminded that risk is what his job is all about. |

Ensign Demora Sulu
At the christening ceremony of the Excelsior Class U.S.S. Enterprise™ NCC-1701-B, Chekov brings the helmsman of the new vessel forward to meet Captain Kirk. Ensign Demora Sulu, the daughter of Captain Hikaru Sulu, follows in her father's footsteps at the helm of the Starship Enterprise. Demora has heard many stories about this man from her father's adventures with him. Proudly, she accepts congratulations from Kirk, and later follows his order to get under way for a "quick run around the block." |

ESCAPING REALITY
Doctor Tolian Soran has lost everything – his home, his family, his entire world in an attack from the Borg. Only the mysterious nexus promises joy from the burden of reality. Yet chasing that dream has quite probably cost him his sanity, leaving Soran empty of all except determination. After spending years searching for a way back Soran has found one, but at what cost? |

RENEGADES
Determined to restore their family's political power, the sisters of Duras, Lursa and B'Etor have become renegades. Using Soran's scientific knowledge they will build a trilthium weapon which they plan to use to regain position. But working with Soran has proven more of a challenge than expected, and now the appearance of the U.S.S. Enterprise™ creates more problems. Fortunately for the sisters, they hold hostage the Chief Engineer of the U.S.S. Enterprise,™ and their brilliant accomplice has a plan. |

FRAGILE ALLIANCE
The alliance between Soran and the Klingon Duras sisters is successful, however precarious. Soran uses Lursa and B'Etor to obtain the trilithium he needs to create his solar probes, and Lursa and B'Etor receive instructions from Soran on how to use the trilithium to create a great weapon. The one complication that neither side expects is the sudden appearance of the U.S.S. Enterprise.™ |

ONE LAST TIME
For James T. Kirk, commanding a starship is his life's destiny and ultimate purpose. The void of retirement has left him seeking other avenues of adventure. Attending the christening ceremony of Starfleet's newest ship only heightens his sense of loss and makes the years weigh heavier on shoulders already burdened with loneliness. When given the chance to jump back into the fray, there is no hesitation – Kirk is there and, once again, he saves a ship called U.S.S. Enterprise.™ |

THE GREATEST LEGACY
Caught in the illusion of the past created by the nexus, Kirk finds himself back home on a pivotal day of his lite. He has a chance to start over, to marry a woman he loves and raise a family, instead of returning to Starfleet and his career. But Picard knows Kirk as he knows himself – the challenge and adventure of command have allowed them both to affect lives, affect whole worlds, for the better. What greater legacy can a single man leave the generation that follows him? |

Surrounded by Klingons
Pictured here is Star Trek Generations director David Carson posing outside a Paramount Pictures stage with the crew of the Duras sisters' Klingon Bird-of-Prey. Behind him are Barbara March (Lursa) and Gwynyth Walsh (B'Etor). Surrounding them are the Klingons comprising the bridge crew. Each Klingon takes up to three hours to get fully prepared for the camera, working with the Make-up, Hair and Wardrobe departments. |

A Stellar Set
The Stellar Cartography Room is not only one of the most visually stunning sets in Star Trek Generations, but also integral to the plot of the film. On this set, Picard and Data will analyze Doctor Soran's actions to deduce his true intent – changing the course of the Nexus ribbon towards Veridian III. Note the track along which a camera will be dollied to film the scene. |

Homebodies
It's just another quiet day at home, as Soran enjoys a cup of coffee while B'Etor tends to her knitting … Actually, they're Malcolm McDowell and Gwynyth Walsh relaxing between takes. Filming can be a long, arduous process as crew members carefully block scenes. As a result, actors must find creative ways to pass the time. Soon they'll return to filming scenes where Soran maintains an uneasy alliance with the scheming sisters Lursa and B'Etor. |

Working Miracles
Star Trek Generations begins with the christening of a new starship, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B. Kirk, Scotty, and Chekov are aboard only as observers, but find themselves called to action one last time to rescue the two El-Aurian vessels caught in the Nexus ribbon. In this fast-moving scene, note the use of two cameras to film all the special effects action in one take. |

By the Book
Director David Carson first worked with Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes in 1989 when he directed the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "The Enemy." The British-born Carson came to the United States after directing BBC productions such as the Sherlock Holmes series. Carson also directed "Emissary," the premiere episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In this photo, he discusses the script with the actors while filming a scene where Lieutenant Worf is to be promoted. |

Transformation
Depicted here is the special effects model shop at Industrial Light & Magic where the U.S.S. Excelsior was transformed into the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B. Fans will recall that the U.S.S. Excelsior was first seen in 1984's Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. The model then went on to serve duty as Captain Sulu's starship in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. After ten years of service, the model required refurbishing for use as the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B in Star Trek Generations. |
