KHAN'S DEFEAT
from TOS: SPACE SEED
Captain Kirk explained to Mr. Spock that he could be against Khan while also admiring him. However, Kirk certainly did not admire Khan when the genetically engineered tyrant tried to toke over the Enterprise. The attempt nearly succeeded, but Kirk overcame his foe in a showdown in Engineering. Ultimately, Kirk dropped all charges against Khan and allowed him to settle on Ceti Alpha V. |

|
PHASER
The first phaser pistol used by Starfleet personnel were issued in 2151, and utilized phase-modulated particle technology. These early weapons featured two settings, one for stun and one for kill. More advanced phaser weaponry was introduced in the early 23rd century and became standard issue for all Starfleet personnel and ships. These more advanced weapons could be adjusted to various settings such as stun, heat, disrupt and overload. |
E2 |
|
PHASER RIFLE
Phaser rifles were employed in situations where greater firepower was needed than that of hand held phasers. They provided advanced defense against superior foes such as the Borg, Jem'Hadar and Species 8472. The rifles also provided a targeting scope for more accurate firing across long distances. |
E3 |
|
COMMUNICATOR
Communicators were used by Starfleet personal during missions to communicate with both ships and other landing party members. Prior to the 24th century, communicators featured a hand held, flip top design. By the 24th century, communicators were incorporated into Starfleet badges worn on uniforms and activated by touch. |
E4 |
|
TRICORDER
The tricorder was a multifunction, hand-held device used to scan, analyze and record data. There were three basic models of tricorders: general-purpose, medical and engineering. Each model was configured for its specific purpose and provided different readouts. The medical tricorder featured a detached hand-held, high-resolution scanner for more detailed patient analysis. |
E5 |
|
TRANSPORTER
The first transporter authorized for biological obiects was installed on the Enterprise NX-01 in 2151. Initially, its crew was hesitant and relied more on shuttle pods for transportation. As transporter technology evolved, its use for short-range missions became more common. By the 24th century, the technology had advanced to the point that site-to-site transport was possible without return to a transporter room. |
E6 |
|
WARP DRIVE
Most starships capable of faster-than-light travel do so via the controlled reaction of matter and antimatter via dillithium crystals. On Earth, the warp drive was invented in 2063 by Zefram Cochrane, and the first warp drives used on Federation ships in 2151 were limited to warp five. By 2371, more advanced Federation vessels could reach a warp 9.975, but only for short periods. |
E7 |
|
SHUTTLECRAFT
Shuttlecraft were short range vessels that varied in both size and range. Early shuttlecraft in the 22nd century were capable of sub-warp speeds and used for landing on various planet surfaces for ship-to-shore missions. By the 23rd century, shuttlecraft were outfitted with warp nacelles and phaser weapons. |
E8 |
|
ENVIRONMENTAL SUIT
Environmental suits were sealed protective gear worn by Starfleet personnel in hostile environments. Styles changed over the years from a copper and chrome body suit with [rigid] frame in the 22nd century, to a softer chromo-metallic fabric in the 2260s, to harder-edged materials later in the 23rd century and beyond. These later [versions] often incorporated built-in communicators and magnetic boots. |
E9 |
|
DUTY UNIFORM
The regular duty Starfleet uniform underwent multiple evolutions from its introduction in the 22nd century. The uniform indicated the person's rank as well as division within Starfleet. Divisions were indicated via color: Command (gold), Operations (red), Science/Medical (blue). In the mid-24th century, the colors for Command and Operations were reversed. |
