Star Trek: The Next Generation Build The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D is a UK partwork magazine available via subscription from the Eaglemoss website and also from selected retailers in some parts of the country. It was first made available to the public on 13 February 2019. This is a similar process to that undertaken with the Star Trek Starships partwork in 2012 before its full release the following year.
The model is designed using elements of the three 1701-D shooting models created by the shows designers. Designed to be built by the collector, this model when complete will be 70cm in length and is constructed of ABS plastic and die-cast metal with electronic lighting. The ship comprises several components; saucer, stardrive, and both nacelles, each with its own lighting unit. The completed model can be displayed in saucer separation mode or as a single piece. It will be possible to use the lighting elements after receving the first four issues.
Each of the 100 planned issues includes model parts and the magazines (measuring 220 x 284 mm) include detailed step-by-step instructions on how to assemble the model. The parts will simply clip or screw together without the need for glue and all the external pieces are ready painted with all the necessary decals already applied. No further tools or paints are required. The magazines will also include inside information, details about the three filming models, the design of the interior of the Enterprise and visual effects secrets.
Issue 1 is retailed in two distinct forms of packaging. It seems that supermarkets stocked it in a folded wraparound card backing board and other independant retailers
had them on a flat backing board. This was available in shops on 13 February 2019 while issue 2 of the test release was in shops on 28 February 2019. Issue 2 included an A5 leaftlet informing of the suspension of the publication after part 2 until further notice.
An email communication was sent to suscribers on 9th May 2019 confirming again that
the "collection" is suspended but they are "working on upgrading the model."
As at 1 October 2020 there is still no news on if/when the series will recommence.
In late November 2020 the following splash image was inadvertently published for the revamped model. It's likely that this contains an unfinished second prototype of the new model but it's a good indication that we may be getting close to the new relase. While this new version is by no means perfect, it does show significant improvements over the original suspended version. I think we can also take the "1:8 Scale Model" text as hideously inaccurate as this scale would require a model of 80 meters in length! If the finished model is "over 25 inches long", maybe the 70cm stated for the previous version, then the scale will be around 1:900.
